The match report that appeared on Ed's Eye Today, 2 December 2006, we saw the first ever Charity Shield match between last season's League Champions, Chawn Hill Church and the 2006 Cup Winners, Dynamo Kingswinford. Chawn started more promisingly that Dynamo and were soon in front with a goal through Lee Darlington. Carl Gethen then made in two with a looping header over the Dynamo keeper. It was no more than Chawn deserved. With ten minutes of the half remaining, Dynamo began to get forward and threaten the Chawn goal. But Chawn scored again through Curtis Jordan, to leave Dynamo trailing three-nil at the break. In the second half Dynamo came out in very positive fashion and pressed Chawn back. They came close to scoring on a number of occasions, hitting the post twice. But Chawn soaked up the pressure and towards the end got back on top. They missed a penalty and then Lee Darlington nodded in a header from close range at the far post to wrap things up. Both teams played in a combative style, just like Kevin used to and at times things got a little heated; again just like Kev. I think the score-line was a little kind on Chawn, but they did deserve to win. Perhaps four-two would have reflected the balance of play. We are hoping that this match will be the start of many, but with the next match scheduled for the week before the season kicks off. So next season's match is pencilled in for 25 August, with the home team being the League Division One winners. If a team wins the double, then the Division Two Champions will be the opposition. |
