Five-a-Side July 2007

WMCFL has traditionally held an annual five-a-side competition in the summer. We were unable to arrange it last year but on Saturday 14 July it was back. The turnout was a little disappointing with only eleven teams entering; that included both Chawn Hill Church and Rowley College entering an 'A' and 'B' team.

We had two courts booked for four hours and managed to cram in fifty-eight games! Everybody played each other once and the top four teams went through to semi-finals. Ironically it was the teams placed third and fourth, Rowley 'B' and Halesowen Zion, that won the semi-finals after Chawn had won all but two of their ten league matches, coming top of the group phase by seven points.

The final was a fitting climax to the competition. In a pulsating match, Rowley eventually came through as winners but were pushed all the way to the final whistle by a Zion team who kept getting up after what appeared to be the knock-out punch. Zion opened the scoring and held the lead for a little while. Rowley then equalised and soon lead two-one. It all appeared over when Mark Southall coolly slotted home to give his side a three-one lead, but Zion responded: three-two. Once again, Halesowen appeared dead-and-buried as Rowley regained their two-goal lead, but Halesowen were back again in an instant: four-three. Rowley once again threw what appeared to be the knock-out blow, but Halesowen returned with another to bring the scores to five-four at which point referee Len Perry blew the final whistle.

A superb match to end a good competition, with the weather holding off to give a rain-free tournament. Once again a big 'thank-you' to Neil Kovacs who did a brilliant job organising the day. He really excelled himself this time, with superb documentation and a trouble-free day.
