Saturday Review

Firstly, my apologies for the delay in getting this report to you and for the general tardiness of updates from the week-end.

Division One

St Mary's 3 King's AFC 1

St Mary's extend their lead to twelve points with a hard-fought victory against a plucky King's team that pushed them all the way last Saturday. St Mary's now have forty points from their fifteen games, dropping points in just two of them with one draw and one defeat. Whilst Clarendon are, what seems like, a mile behind, they have three games in hand and the teams have to play each other.

King's meanwhile, are a whole twenty-one points behind St Mary's but are still in fourth, despite a minor blip in form just lately.

Rowley College 2 City Church 1

Rowley move into third with a slim 2-1 win at home to City in what sounded like one of those games that you'd rather forget. Pete Bennett says: City may have been without their talismanic midfielder Quaintance but at least they had eleven. I came into this one knowing I needed thirteen since two of my lads could only offer a half or so because of the Villa early kick off (and the keeper was already on his way). As it turned out we had ten, with the threat of eight with one lad promising he might be there for the second half! Alun Inett (who else?) and Chris McIvor thankfully stayed to the end (hats off to both of them) and ended up part of a memorable victory (Alun is a veteran of our historic 4-3 win against FC Foley when we started 8 and had a lad sent off in the first half!). Today it was 10 versus 11 then 9 versus 11 then 10 again.

I think I unwittingly pulled a fast one by setting up offensively in the first half (3-1-3-2) since City later admitted they hadn’t noticed we had ten until well into the half. By that time a pretty scrappy game had produced very little: they’d had a number of long range efforts and we’d caused problems with a couple of Hunter throws. In a game in which all of our players ran themselves into the ground, two still shone: Jamie Hunter and Chrissy Staien: the former provided a constant threat and the latter prevented the quality City undoubtedly had up front to have a pretty frustrating time. As the half wore on we found our feet a little and got the perfect reward when from a measured through ball Hunter lobbed the keeper.

I was still expecting to lose players so the original plan was to have 15 minutes more attacking (down the slope), hope for our reinforcement and then defend what we’d got with eight or nine behind the ball. Oh the best laid plans…City came out with power and purpose, got a penalty for a trip (which only looked harsh because their lad didn’t go down so full marks to the referee) which they scored and then Adam Rose (who lost his wallet on Friday evening) got a red for a curse (to himself) but right under the ref’s nose. Now we were nine with two about to leave and our efforts perhaps heading for nought. However, do not despair: Alun and Chris stayed, our reinforcement arrived and after a brief spell with nine (during which I think they hit the post) we were back and at it and at our most dangerous. We also hit the post, their keeper made a couple of saves and then Hunter powered in a dipping volley from 25 yards (fit to win any game). Al still had a save or two to make and we had chances to make it safe but, as against St Matt's earlier in the season the satisfaction was immense (and two defeats in those two would have left us very differently placed)

I thought the referee today was excellent because he was definite in his decisions and showed great understanding of the game as it developed. Even though important decisions went against us I was always aware of his professionalism and impartiality. Well done Chris!

Martin Ogbourn adds: Today's game versus Rowley was not a great spectacle, and neither team really deserved to take all three points. However, it was Rowley who found a winner late on from a lofted shot/cross. The game was pretty bad-tempered and both sides were embroiled in a narrow, attritrional midfield battle in the second half which played into Rowley's hands. Rowley are always very committed and although they played with 10 men, they appeared to play with greater fight than City. For the first time this season the opposition wanted it more than we did in the second half as we lost our shape and composure, despite hitting the crossbar and forcing several good saves from the Rowley keeper. The first half was better for us and we had a disproportionate amount of possession and created a great deal more than Rowley who (understandably) were content to play on the break and use their formidable strength at set-plays. Craig Micklewright was always good on the ball and looked dangerous on the counter attack. Their goal came from their first shot on target lofted over our top-scoring goalkeeper, Daniel Atkins in the City goal. He had time to score a well-taken penalty at the start of the second half, which should have been a springboard to victory.

Special mention to Jonathon Shepherd and to Jonathan Wheeler who had solid games in their first starts of the season. It is also worth noting that Daniel Atkins, flew back from Scotland especially for the game to play in goal in the first half as our 5th choice goalkeeper and Rob Stokes played the second half in goal with an injury as our 6th choice keeper. Rob even pulled off one spectacular reaction save! It is a shame that all members of the squad do not show the same level of commitment.

St Matthew's 2 Halesowen Zion 2

Halesowen's Dave Walters reports: After being 2-0 down at half time I have to be happy with a point, but I thought we may have done enough second period to win the game, missing a couple of excellent chances, but to be fair to St Matt's they had their chances as well so a draw was probably the right result. Good to see Tom on the score sheet again after a barren spell.

St Thomas' Aldridge 5 Dynamo Kingswinford 2

St Thomas' open up a six point gap between themselves and bottom club DK and winning the basement battle 5-2. Rob Hill says: Our first match at home since November, a win and a hat-trick for Ashley Thorpe:no complaints. Another good team effort today but to DK's credit they never gave up and but for a fine save from our keeper Rob Wood, who is living proof that hair restorer can work, at 3-1 things could have been a lot closer.

Chris Preece back from an uncomfortable broken collar bone (nice to see you back to health Chris) adds: A vital three points for us today against our fellow strugglers, it was imperative that we won to keep in touch with the teams ahead of us to give us any chance of survival. The game started fairly evenly with attacks from both teams and the front two for Dynamo looking lively. We created a few chances but nothing of note, until Ash went on a mazy run beating three or four men and slid it past the keeper with a cool finish. At this point I thought we might be in for an easy ride, but that wasnt really the case, as Dynamo pushed on and we allowed Stuart Yates to net an eqauliser after some sloppy defending. We then reacted in a postive may, by playing some nice football, which culminated in a rifling left foot shot (yes left foot )from the edge of area from Ste Busby, which may have taken a very slight deflection on the way. We went in at half time 2-1 to the good.

It was essential that we got an early goal in the second half to settle us a little and sure enough Ash provided it with a fantastic effort from about twenty-five yards out. Then we followed up with some nice passing play, which resulted in a cool finish from Matt Challinor. Ash then sealed his hat-trick (deservedly so) which put us out of sight. Although Dynamo hit back with a nice move and header from Stuart again, whose movement was good throughout the game.

The game was a bit tougher than the scoreline suggested, we didnt really spark today as a team but still won which is encouraging. Dynamo gave us a good game today and we had to work for the three points. Finally I would like to add that the ref and linesmen were excellent throughout the match. Well done to all the boys today!

Division Two

Just a couple of games played today in Division Two. The results seemed to play into W&P's hands as their title chances took a major boost. If they win their last two matches, they'll be almost uncatchable.

West Bromwich Beacons 1 Selly Oak Methodist 3

Selly Oak move up to third with a 3-1 win away at West Brom who are topping the group of four clubs fighting for survival in Division Two. Selly Oak can upset Wolves' promotion prospects when the two teams meet in the closing stages of the season, meanwhile West Brom can throw their own spanner in the works as their last two games are against St Boniface and Walsall Olympic.

St Boniface 2 Renewal Solihull 3

St Boniface themselves slip back from favourites to back in the pack chasing W&P after losing at home to Renewal Solihull. As ever, Renewal confound the form book and come good towards the end of the season. After dicing with relegation for some time, they are looking relatively safe.

Division Three

Congratulations to Champions Church who secured the first ever Division Three title. Whilst we are on the subject of records, well done to Shawn Devonport who broke the record for the most ever goals in a season by one player: 39. And we are far from over. I wouldn't rule out Everton Morrison from Clarendon catching him though. He's got 26 and has eight games left. He is knocking in four a game, so it could be close come the season end.

Shawn also equalled Mark Hadden's achievement of reaching 100 goals. His team mate and pew sharer Lee Ralph offers his congratulations: Just a quick note to congratulate Shawny on reaching 100 goals and in one less season than anyone else. he is a remarkable talent and a great bloke. I've watched him over the last five years mature not only on the pitch but also as a person and am very proud to call him my friend and to play alongside him.

Elim Athletic 1 Champions Church 6

Shawn Devonport reports: The sun was finally shining on a saturday morning but the drying pitches that have been cut up of late made for a very bobbly surface on a very small pitch, so with not much space available we knew it was going to be a battle! Neither team really gained control of the game early on until we created one of those fifteen minute spells that we have done many times this year to effectively kill off the game with two goals from myself and another for Rion Mills giving us a 3-0 lead. This was harsh on Elim who were knocking the ball about well without creating chances except for a few well delivered corners but they did pull one back after an horrific bobble meant our stand in keeper Mark Goule had the ball bounce in his face and Sean Mckenna was there to slot home. Despite not playing well we were 3-1 up and now another solid 45 minutes would mean the title was wrapped up.

The second half was one way traffic in the main and two goals from the once again impressive Josh Ball. One was a stunning drive from 25 yards meant we were 5-1 up and now was a matter of playing the game out. We created numerous half openings and Dave Oakley put the gloss on the win with a fantastic drive from on the edge of the box. The second half was more like us on a good day and we were much happier with the performance.

Elim should however keep their heads held high because they knock it around very well for a team in our league and up front Knowles is a real handfull and you can see the class McKenna has, he should just be a bit more selfish sometimes as he is a class act! Walter in centre midfield is a good little player as well and they have a very decent winger. I know Jon was unhappy with the defending so if they sort that out I think they should be in the mix for promotion.

But today for us was our first title in our first season and all though many may look at it and say its only Division Three the standard has been much better than we expected this year. Brierlly Hill who are struggling towards the bottom of the division, have a much better squad of players this year and are playing some very good stuff, their best in years. They are still finding it difficult to improve on their Division Two position which is a testament to the standard as there ain't many easy matches. We will have to be at the top of our game against them next week. Shiloh have pushed us in both games as well as a very impressive Rockmount team did and I do hope they get promotion because I think they are a very god team. Birmingham International gave us a stern test at home as did Lighthouse and DC who are the only team to score more than two against us this year. We havn't had many easy matches at all and the fact we have won every game is down to our lads' determination and attitudes as we have found ourselves behind in many matches and in a few games still level with only minutes remaining and still came out on top.

So just want to congratulate the lads, many of whom have not played regular football before, on a fantastic acheivement because regardless of what some people think we ain't a one or two man team because every one of the fifteen players have contributed this season at some point as well as our manager Tim who has put a lot of effort and time into making us a sucsess. To have such a reliable backline who have only conceded more than one goal in three of the seventeen games is a fantastic start point as well as two top drawer keepers who have not made one mistake between them all season. The centre midfield duo of Dave and Tim never stop running. The different wingers in Rion, Greg, Rob and Josh Burchell have all contributed with some fantastic performances with I hope Rion going on to win Player of the Year because he has been class all season! And from a personal note to be scoring as frequently as I have has been pleasing but nine times out of ten, the hard work has all ready been done by the other guys. Josh Ball has scored five in his last four and at sixteen looks a very very exciting addition! And just a quick mention to Mark Goule who is the Jon O'Shea of our team filling in allmost every position this year after suffering a bad injury and he has never moaned once.

So three more matches and we won't let up. We want a 100% record and are looking forward to playing the best in Clarendon and will enjoy that day no matter what the result is. Well done lads!

All Nations 0 Lighthouse Lions 11

The Lions roar back up to second place with a double-digit result against All Nations. Ray Rose says: Lighthouse Lions played their way back into the promotion race with a convincing win today.

On 16 minutes, confusion in the All Nations area allowed Adam Elcock to round the keeper to score our first goal. Twenty five minutes in and a terrific run and cross from Marcus Mclaren led to a confused All Nations conceding an own goal.

From here on in we made many chances and attacks on goal and the only thing keeping us out was their No 5 standing in our way. However on 30 minutes James Doris scored his first of the day and on 35 minutes Bryn Oliver, making his debut, scored from long range, a first class goal which he will remember for a long time to come.

On 47 Minutes James Doris scored his second goal and a minute later scored again, making his hat trick. Marcus Mclaren then scored from a corner with a ball the keeper could do nothing with in the 58th minute.

At this point in the game we sent on two substitutes, Rikki Badger and Steve Goslings and almost immediately Rikki Badger hit a terrific shot from outside the area to make our score 8-0. On 66 minutes Ryan Cowley our right back scored and on 74 minutes Marcus Mclaren added our 10th goal. Our final goal came on the 82nd minute with a wonderful goal from Adam Elcock and we ended the game on 11-0.

For all our goals All Nations played the game in the right spirit and with a positive attitude they did their team manager, Shane Wedderburn proud. In Loz Mitchel, Al Nations have a real star, and if they can build around players like him, they will be a better team next year.

Birmingham International 7 Rockmount United 2

Inter move into third with a hastily arranged game against fellow promotion hopefuls Rockmount. United had an off day and are a long-shot for an automatic promotion place but it's not over yet. Inter played themselves back into a strong position, equal on points with Lighthouse but with a game in hand.

Inter's Kwesi says: Following our return to winning ways we knew the game against Rockmount would be a tough test. We had the psychological advantage of having beaten them in the league and in a friendly, however, we knew that would motivate them and they also carried momentum from their recent good form.

From the outset, Rockmount were looking to use their pacey attack and asked us a few questions, both through the middle and down the flanks. However, we opened the scoring after a cross from the right wing was knocked into the air and volleyed home by the striker. We extended the lead to 2:0 before Rockmount struck back from a free kick on the edge of the box. However, we gave the perfect response three minutes later and went into the break with a two goal advantage.

Given Rockmount’s recent record and having thrown away the advantage in previous games we knew we’d have to be on our game to clinch the victory. The defence weathered the storm at times and the keeper made some excellent saves. Up front we probably didn’t create any more chances than we did against Brierley Hill or Shiloh. However, the attack worked well together and seemed to have one of those days where everything comes off. It was an excellent battle, and in truth, Rockmount, although somewhat deflated at the end, are an excellent footballing side and competed well. On another day, they may have got something out of the game. All the best for the rest of the season lads.

Shiloh United 1 DC Dynamos 4

Mark Crouch eulogises: On a truly glorious sunny spring day it was seventh against eighth. Having had two tough matches against a very able Shiloh United it was wonderful for me to see us battle so well to the final whistle.

Shiloh started well and were unlucky not to score as our keeper tipped a stinging shot over the bar. It was end to end stuff but with DC sittting too deep, Shiloh seemed to have an age in midfield. Unfortunately for them they couldn't make this time and space pay as their only other effort in the first half was again saved well by our keeper and Dave Rich with a goal line clearence.

A great ball by Ray Cole split the Shiloh defence and Dean Cole ran through and lofted a great finish over their keeper and in: 1-0 DC.

The second half started and DC were quickly in the ascendency with Temo Lall bursting through on the right and he finished with a wonderful nick beating their keeper from a really tight angle. 2-0 DC

Shiloh threatened with a freekick from the left. A great defensive header saw the ball fall to James Cole who carried it over the half way line and turned Shiloh's defence one way and then the other before sliding the ball under the advancing keeping for a superbly taken goal. 3-0 DC

We seemed to take our foot off the gas and a great bit of interchanging play by Shiloh down our right resulted in a really well taken goal as Sholih pulled back a consolation. 3-1 DC

DC attacked from the restart and a Shiloh foul resulted in a DC freekick. James Cole took the freekick and for my part I knew the goal was never in doubt as he placed the ball in the Shiloh net from 30 yards. A wonderfully taken goal from a player who is the first to admit he didnt have the best of games. 4-1 DC.

I am please how we played today and it was great to see a TEAM performance as everyone battled for everyone and every ball. Final game of our season next week against Elim I just hope we can play like this and finish with our heads held high for decent first season in a really great League.

Man of the match today for us was Dave Rich who was a rock at the back. Players of note Sam Reeve, Ray Cole,Josh and Steve Burford, Matty Gordon and Temo Lall. Man of the match for them was their number 11 who didn't deserve to be on a losing side.

Friendly

I am getting quite a few requests from teams for friendlies and a number of people are enquiring about joining us. One such club is Pye Green Christian Centre, from up Cannock way. They played their first ever match against MBD United, also quite a new team.

MBD United 11 Pye Green 0

Dave Green from Pye Green emailed me: We played our first friendly againest MBD today and got an 11-0 thrashing. They were by far a more organised side but were a pleasure to play againest. As it was the first time our team had ever met together and we're not disheartened. I would appreciate it if you would put an ad out for anyone wanting a friendly on their free Saturdays so we can get the experience in.

Saturday Review

At last we have some football on: Eleven games out of fifteen played and thankfully both City and Sheldon both played. I reffed the St Mary's versus Dynamo games and the pitch there was in excellent nick. With temperatures forecast to be considerably higher this week, let's hope we've seen the back of the worst of all those cancellations.

Quite a sizeable report this week too. Thanks to all contributers, you help make the site what it is and stops me waffling on, page after page.

Division One

With St Mary's and Clarendon both winning today and those behind them stumbling or not playing, the large gap just got bigger. There is an eighteen point gap between St Mary's in first and King's in third. And they've played the same number of games!

St Mary's 6 Dynamo Kingswinford 1

Someone from Dynamo commented to me today that they had scored fewer goals than any other team in the whole League. DK didn't look like a bad team today and played well against the League leaders. 6-1 was a bit harsh but a win for St Mary's didn't seem in much doubt.

St Mary's took the lead after about ten minutes after Ian Coleman put a perfect cross for the St Mary's striker to finish from four yards. It was a little while before they extended their lead from a (disputed) penalty. Aren't they all? Within a couple of minutes it was three and I thought a rout was on the cards but Dynamo regrouped and scored their own (disputed) penalty. At least the discussion about this one was whether it was in or out of the area, not whether it was a foul or not. So 3-1 at half time.

Dynamo kept the score at 3-1 for quite a while until stand-in, semi-perma keeper Gary Lamsdale gifted St Mary's a fourth. He was quite cross with himself but I have to say that overall Gaz had an excellent game. A little while later he pulled off a superb save one on one to deny St Mary's a fifth; it was top drawer.

With the match secure, Jon Jackaman brought himself on and added to the tally before a sixth was scored. Overall, St Mary's were in control of this game but DK are nowhere near as bad as their league position suggests. They still have a core of the team that won the Cup three times. There's plenty of grey hair in the Dynamo team these days, I'm sure with a small influx of younger blood, the team can be great again.

Clarendon 2 City Church 0

Clarendon secure the points but were made to work for them by a resilient City side. Martin Ogbourn says: It was a relief to finally play a game of football after 2 games in 12 weeks! The game was (almost!) worth the wait as it was another good, close, competitive game between Clarendon and City. The victory was not secured for Clarendon until late in the game when City were pushing forward for an equaliser, and the excellent James McCallister (in the City goal) could only half stop a low shot from a Clarendon counter attack. The frustrating thing from our viewpoint is that we have twice pushed Clarendon all the way this season, but we don't have the points to show for it!

City started strongly in the first half and Clarendon were restricted to long range efforts which rarely troubled the keeper until Everton Morrison was able to slot home a good shot after a sharp, passing move. This was one of the few occasions in the match when he was allowed space on the edge of the box and he made us pay.

City had good spells of pressure at the start, and end off the second half, and could have snatched a point with several clear chances.

Overall, on the balance of play Clarendon probably deserved the victory. However, it was another fine, spirited and brave performance from all 12 City players, especially as we played some of the first half with ten men (after Rob Stokes went off with a deep gash on his knee), and ended the game with at least 5 players struggling with injuries or suffering from cramp after the long lay off. It was a scene from the Alamo in our changing room after the game! The back 5 were particularly impressive with Joe Melia and Andy Tranter having excellent games as they kept the impressive Clarendon forwards largely quiet.

On a more important matter I have just read about Tracey Earp, and all at City wish her a full and speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and the family at this incredibly difficult time. May God comfort and sustain them, and may the family find peace in Christ. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1"

Roger Moore adds: We should have won by more but hats off to an excellent City team that battled very hard and never allowed us to get a grip of the game.

Halesowen Zion 0 St Thomas' Aldridge 0

Halesowen's Dave Walters reports: A goaless game is a rare thing when we are involved but today on let's just say a difficult surface, when you expect defensive mistakes it was even more suprising. It was in fact the forwards who found the conditions challenging with missed chances at both ends. The game followed a similar pattern throughout, with us the more dominate, but St Tom's always dangerous on the break. The first half saw us pressing but St Tom's successfully defending in numbers. Mark Boyle had our best chance but scuffed his shot into the keepers arms. St T's probably had the best chance of the game when after a quick counter attack their number seven sliced a shot wide (he had an excellent game).

The second half again we were camped in there half with St T's keeper making a couple of super saves from Jon Lea and Chris Bennett, and Dan Carver hitting the post, but again St T's had a super chance to win the game but was well blocked by Jon Williams. A draw was a fair result in the end, but whether a point is of any use to either team remains to be seen.

St Thomas' Chris Preece adds: Once again we could just about field a side, with a bit of last minute frantic phoning by Rob (Hill). But we were happy to get a game, given the recent fixture postponements.

The game started with early exchanges from both sides but it was Halesowen who had the bulk of the possession in the first period. A good few goal scoring opportunities were squandered by our forwards and theirs alike. The pitch was a "touch" boggy, but provided a classic WMCFL February game, lots of air kicks, incomplete passes etc....I think it was fair that both we went in all square.

The second half mirrored the first with both teams creating lots of chances; it’s just that no one could actually put the ball in the net. Scrappy defending ensued from both sides, and I must give great praise to all lads involved. I think it’s fair to say that everyone involved "put in a shift". It was great to see some of the younger lads do well for us today, Ash, Dan B, Mark and Rich, but special praise is reserved for perhaps the oldest player in the league (maybe even the world), Rob Wood, (I thought you were going to say Rob Hill then-Ed click) who made an outstanding save today to keep a well deserved clean sheet. We expected a tough one today, given the likes of Cockcroft, and Doran's etc....but we are not quite dead and buried yet, a point we can build on, and sprits are high in the St T's camp.

Rob Hill adds: We started very nervously which was hardly surprising as we had shipped twenty goals in the last three games. We eventually got going and played some decent stuff for the last fifteen minutes of the first half and missed the best chance of the half.

Zion continued where the left off in the second half dominating the game and going too close for comfort on several occasions. Our keeper Rob Wood-who continues to belie his 54 years-kept us in it with a great save and we spurned two gilt edged chances in the last few minutes. We were glad of the point but felt on clear cut chances we might have nicked it.

Zion , like us, were ring rusty but have some cracking players and I am sure will be a force to be reckoned with in Division One-we wish them well. I was really proud of the lads today who hung in there and showed great commitment and the team spirit was excellent. The three youngsters, Marc Buller, Rich Morley and Ashley Thorpe all did superbly well but were well supported and encouraged by the old Gits. It was great to have Chris Preece back after his three month injury lay-off with a broken collar bone.-I am sure that Dave Walters and myself would have been back playing after three weeks-but the younger generation today...

Sheldon Community Church 3 King's AFC 1

Sheldon complete their half season with a 3-1 win over local rivals King's and move up to sixth place in the table. Club Secretary Lyndon Fisher tells more: This was a tough game on a very heavy pitch. King's put us under pressure from the start, we rode the storm with some dogged defending and started to play
some football. We were rewarded with a fine goal by Tim Atkins from a tight angle, and a 20 yard screamer from midfield maestro Richard Lucey.

The second half was a real battle as the conditions started to worsen: Tackles flying in, everybody covered in mud, both teams creating chances but a further goal by Richard Lucey sealed King's fate. They scored a late consolation goal. I must mention our centre forward Mike Hinton who stood in for our goalkeeper superbly.

Division Two

Four of the six postponed matches from yesterday were in Division Two. It seems that Sandwell Council had taken the decision to call a blanket cancellation to all their pitches, despite the improving conditions. With half of D2's teams playing their home matches on their grounds, they were always going to suffer.

Chawn Hill Church 5 Selly Oak Methodist 2

Chawn took full advantage of South Road's idiosyncrasies with a convincing win against a Selly Oak team on the march towards Division Two. It did seem that Chawn were on the march to Division Three but this win changes all that and will have put the frighteners up Renewal and West Brom. Fellow ruptured cruciate ligament sufferer Paul Taylor reports: Yet another great warrior was humbled in the 'Lions' Den'. Chawn Hill have eyes only for survival in their remeining fixtures. A professional performance by a determined side claimed the valuable three points.

Chawn started the stronger in the early exchanges but went a goal down by a 25 yard sublime strike. Chawn picked themselves up and set about the task in hand. Chawn equalised and then POW (you are showing your age-Ed) went ahead. More goals followed numbers three, four and five. The capacity crowd were pinching themselves and several of them complained of severe bruising after the game!! The pick of the goals was the completion of a first half hat-trick by GREG JONES. A ball over the top was met by a thunderous half volley which left the Selly Oak goalkeeper a mere observer as the hit the under side of the bar and then the net bellowed. A truly great goal and one worthy of winning the match ball (they now only have one left).

The second half was just as eventful with goal chances and great saves for both sides. Selly Oak scored their second through a penalty. A really enjoyable game to watch and both sides gave a great performance. Chawn Hill now have a two week break from fixtures but will be training hard to achieve their aim of survival.

Rob O'Neill adds: Our promotion challenge may have been blown away today. If we’d have won all of our fixtures including this one we would have been guaranteed third. Now we need other teams to drop points, I have officially become a Renewal Solihull supporter as I think they play a few of the teams we need to drop points.

We didn’t get much of a warm up for this match, however took the early initiative through a cracking strike from Sean Burke. We then seemed to rest on our laurels and the longs balls started peppering our defence from Chawn. Even the keeper with a decent kick out of his hands was landing the ball in the D of our area and a few close range finishes followed in quick succession to put Chawn in control. With the ball on the ground Selly Oak were running things with Jamie Williams, Joel Richards and Luke Bird almost dancing round players at times and Dan Jennings up front looking dangerous every time he got the ball we just couldn’t seem to slide the ball past their keeper. Chawn managed to add a further three goals before the half, one of which was the best goal to go past me (Standing in goal AGAIN, where are you Josh?!? I might make posters soon) which isn’t much comfort.

We went in at half time stunned but there were plenty of rallying cries. We’d seen EK come back from a similar deficit against us and so knew we had a chance. The first half was most definitely Chawn’s and I think we pipped the second half. Dan Jennings on the score sheet again slotting away a penalty and hitting the post, and we forced a few more saves from their keeper. I think Chawn Hill have one of the most battling midfields in the Division which I know our lads enjoy playing against. They are dominant in the air and their captain, second only to maybe Dennis Bailey from Renewal (Will shout outs inspire them?), wins pretty much every header he goes for. I can’t take anything away from Chawn today they were simply more up for it than us and took their chances when they came and handed us our third defeat of the season. The only other teams being Boniface and Walsall and so you have to ask is Chawn’s problem consistency?

Our run in is now West Brom Beacons, Sandwell United and a HUGE crunch match against Wolves and Perton on the closing day of the season. Don’t count us out of promotion yet but as I mentioned before we need one or two results to go our way and with only 4-5 matches each left, time is running out. COME ON RENEWAL!!!!!

Division Three

Champions Church took themselves to the brink of the title with a convincing win against All Nations. MBD made them wait for another week. Champions just need a point from their last four matches or for MBD to fail to win one of their last five. Perhaps the most interesting race in the League is for second and third in Division Three with six teams seperated by five points. With Champions having to play MBD twice and Elim once in their last four, the matches are going to be interesting.

All Nations 1 Champions Church 11

With Champions running away with the Division Three race and All Nations not faring so well, combined with the fact that Champions beat All Nations 14-1 in pre-season, this result is no shock. Having said that, All Nations only lost 2-0 in the corresponding fixture back in October. Congratulations to Shawn Devonport for reaching 100 League Goals yesterday. He's also just one short of Tom Doran's all time season best of 38 in one season.

Shawn Devonport reports: This had the potential to be a tricky tie after having no match for three weeks and having the golden oldie Lee Ralph (well he is in our team) and Josh Ball who has scored three in his last three unavailable. The pitch had a few puddles on it and it was bound to bog up after ten minutes so knew we would have to be up for a scrap against a team that pushed us all the way last time.

The first ten minutes saw us waste a few chances but All Nations were not creating much and we pinned them back. Even though All Nations battled well, the league table doesn't lie, with us going on to notch eleven goals. We were very clinical in front of goal today scoring with all most every chance we created and apart from a comedy own goal we didn't look like conceding at all today.

Timmy Bamber was awesome in centre midfield creating three goals and was absoloutly everywhere. Ashley Devonport keeps getting better and better at full back and Wally and Greg Timmington were there usual solid selves at the back with Rion Mills getting three asists and two goals to continue his fantastic season (to me there is not a better player in Division 3). Dave Oakley keeps going at 37 getting a goal and two fantastic assists and it was good to see Mark Goule complete his first 90 minutes at right back since his injury early November against Lighthouse.

We can wrap up the title with a point next week against Elim and put the gloss on what has been a pretty incredible first season with us now half way into February and still won every game which regardless of how good a team is, is still very impressive to keep that level of consistency up. But still four hard games to come and an exceptionally hard task against Clarendon in the Cup.

MBD United 6 DC Dynamos 1

A Karl Martin hat-trick helped seal an important win for MBD that sees them return to second place in the table. DC's Mark Crouch conceded: We got completely battered by a far better side.

MBD's Neil Howard says: An intersting game was on the cards today as we were playing DC Dynamos, a team some would call our local rivals. We had been unable to play since Dec 20th so were lacking in match fitness and practice. Yet again Dudley Wood was unplayable (a new pitch is high on the agenda for next season) but luckily the referee knew of another local pitch that was marginally better.

The game kicked off and it was as if MBD had never had a break from playing. The five man midfield were controlling everything with the two wide men splitting the DC defence at every attack while the three central players were all pushing forward to give MBD a numerical advantage. The front two of Karl and Ryan were linking up superbly and a lovely one-two back heel nearly saw Ryan get the first of the game. MBD did not have to wait long though before a fine save from DC keeper Ade Dando fell to Karl to put away. A second soon followed after a perfect ball was sent over from Nick George on the left allowed Karl to get his second with his left foot this time. Soon after Ryan clinically finished after winning the ball in the DC Half. The half continued in the same vein with DC always looking threatening from set pieces but never troubling MBD in open play.

MBD started the second half asleep and within minutes DC had pulled a goal back with a well taken finish from Dean Cole. It turned out just to be a blip though when Karl soon got his perfect hat-trick with a header from a lovely Si Larmour cross. Goals five and six soon followed with Rob Lee from close range at the far post and Gary Jordan with a rocket shot from distance. MBD keeper Dave Roberts was forced to make a finger tip save onto the cross bar from a fierce 30 yard shot from Steve Burford but other than that DC's chances we restricted again to set pieces. The last twenty minutes saw MBD camped in DC's half creating chance after chance with every attack and only some fine saves from DC Keeper Ade kept the score to single figures.

Overall it was a great performance today but there is still more to come from us and with much tougher games to come, including two against Champions. We are going to have maintain this level of football to secure that top three finish. Everyone played to the top of their game today but special mention has to go to the midfield especially Si and Gary and to Karl upfront who had done everything but score lately, so it was good to see him getting the goals he deserved.

Ed says: I think DC's chances of sneaking an automatic promotion place took a major blow but it's still mathematically possible. We'll see at the shake up, I'm sure there'll be some comings and goings.

At first glance, MBD's position looks very strong. But they have those two games against Champions to play. To my knowledge, no-one has gone through a season in any of our Divisions winning every game; at least not in the modern era. St Matthew's came close in 05-06 drawing just two. Bilston had a great start in 01-02 as did Grenfell in 03-04. So, I can imagine that Champions will be gunning for that record, should they beat Elim next week.

Rockmount United 2 Brierley Hill AOG 1

Rockmount rise to an incredible third place with a slim defeat against a Brierley side that continue to compete with the top sides in this division. A few weeks ago it seemed inconceivable that they could finish in the top three but a goals from regular scorer Matthew Parnell and the returning Jamal Thomas a Scooby Doo ending is now on the cards. From what I'm told, they deserve to be where they are.

Birmingham International 3 Shiloh United 1

A better performance from Inter keeps them in the hunt for a promotion spot. They remain as one of the favourites to finish in the top three but there will be some bobbing and weaving before the season's out I'm sure. Shiloh maybe a little disappointed with where they have finsihed the season: They cannot rise above eighth now. However, not everyone can win the League and it has been a good, formative season from Shiloh.

Inter's Kwesi Okanta-Ofori says: Inter looked lively from the start and a long throw allowed Mark Johnson to tap the ball home unchallenged after a few minutes play. We dominated most of the first half, but Shiloh battled well and were physically more competitive than the previous meeting of the two clubs. They had a few chances, however, Inter scored their second through the middle, when a through ball from Robert Morgan split the defence and found Nathan Atkinson, who slipped it past the keeper with ease. Shiloh probably deserved a goal and a move down the right culminated in a floated cross which looped over the keeper and was almost in before the forward headed it.

We should have gone into halftime at least 3-1 up and were denied what we thought was a penalty when the left back was up-ended in the box after a clever move from a free kick.

The third goal was an excellent counter-attacking move, and probably one of our finest goals this season. The ball was cleared down the right flank from a corner. Mark Johnson picked it up and after carrying the ball for forty yards, squared across the top of the box. Nathan Atkinson cleverly dummied the ball (knowing the opposition would never believe he’d leave it) allowing Richard Maycock to smash it home with a firm first-time shot, leaving the keeper with no chance

Inter missed several chances through good keeping and poor finishing. Shiloh also made their presence known and had a few opportunities, however, Inter’s number one was dependable in goal, even after a clash with our central defender which nearly saw him substituted.

The comedic moment of the match came when Leon Brown was shoulder to shoulder with Julian Harris, chasing the ball to the by-line. Leon slipped just as they reached the ball and Julian kicked it (innocently) into his body as he slid along the floor. The ball went out for a corner and both players smiled, shook hands and carried on with the game!

Shiloh put up a more spirited fight and are definitely a team on the up. We wish them all the best for the rest of the season. Inter’s season is back on track after a wobble against Brierley Hill. Looks like we’re resting this week so we’ll be looking for a friendly.

Saturday Preview

Well, the big question is: will we get any games in on Saturday? I'm hoping we will. And the forecast is looking more positive, although the rain turned to heavy snow as I was driving home this evening. I acted as Fixtures Secretary for a couple of seasons from 1999 to 2001. This year is getting towards as bad as my second season where we saw about 120 games called off. We've got about 50% more teams in this year, so it's hard to compare but unless things get a lot better very quicky, we'll be in a similar position. The season ended on 19 May that year. I'm hoping that won't be the case again.

Division One

Top play bottom this week-end. Both teams will be after a win but for differing reasons: Three points for Dynamo would spur them on to a season-rescuing run but a win for St Mary's is a must if they are to keep Clarendon at bay. Clarendon themselves were lucky to escape with the points after they scored a late winner when they played City Church earlier in the season. They'll be looking to secure the points sooner than that this Saturday. City themselves will probably be glad just to be playing as they complete their tenth league match of the season, exactly half-way through their games.

King's in third face Sheldon, also on nine games, as the two Saltley Leisure Centre based teams clash. Rowley College, who have risen to a lofty fourth spot, face their old nemesis Amblecote, who badly need a victory. And lastly St Thomas' travel to Halesowen in desperate need of three points if they are to avoid the drop.

Division Two

Wolves and Perton, whose situation seems to improve week on week, (when we play) face a stern test away at Renewal Solihull. From the league position, you'd expect an away win but Solihull is never an easy place to go and get the points, or at best it's unpredictable.

Zion Athletic, still in second, play EK who seem to be struggling of late. As time goes by, EK look more and more like a bottom three finish and need to turn their fortunes around sharply if they are to avoid that fate. Zion away is not the easiest fixture on the calendar.

St Boniface, who are menacing in third place, travel to West Bromwich. St B's have slipped a little of late and West Brom look safer, so the match will be interesting. On paper (or html) you'd expect St Boniface to win but West Brom have some good players and seem able to find the net from time to time, so could spring a surprise if they get it together.

Walsall Olympic, who appeared to be suffering a wobble of late entertain Sandwell United. When you're suffering a wobble, playing bottom of the division at home can be just the tonic. But I know that Sandwell have signed a couple of decent players recently, so it may not be the walk-over they expect.

And finally, Selly Oak, on the cusp of a championship bid, travel to Chawn Hill; the Lions' Den of WMCFL. I don't think anyone relishes playing Chawn in their back yard.

Division Three

It's top versus bottom in Division Three as well as Champions visit All Nations. The mathematicians assure me that Champions are guaranteed a top three finish, as the teams below them have to play each other. Champions could wrap up the title on Saturday dependent on other results and the dreaded weather. Three points and a slip up from MBD would mean Champions Church are the first name on the new trophy.

Lighthouse in second will be tested by fellow promotion hopefuls Elim this week-end. A win for Elim would put them in a very strong position but there's a long way to go, despite there only being a few games left each.

MBD and DC play each other on Saturday too. This is a local derby with added spice as the clubs were formed from the same group of people pre-season. And amazingly, should DC win, they will overtake MBD.

Birmingham International's promotion campaign has slipped a little just recently, so they need a good result from their match with Shiloh. Shiloh cannot mathematically get promoted now, so will be playing for pride. This can sometimes make things much easier, so don't rule out a shock. Mind you, only eight players turned up for their last match. Let's hope the injured players are back to fitness so they can put out a full team.

And last but not least, Rockmount entertain Brierley Hill. Both teams have been in form of late and so will both be expecting a positive result from the game. Two great sets of lads, I'm sure if nothing else they will enjoy themselves.

All the best people for the week-end. I hope we can get a full set of fixtures played. Keep praying for Tracey, she needs His help.

Tracey Earp

Sadly I have to inform you that Tracey from Elim Athletic sufferred a stroke on Sunday and is in hospital.

Tracey has sufferred speech loss and lack of movement down one side.

She can still text so she is still contactable and still making jokes. I would ask that we all pray for a full recovery for her and for some peace to fall upon her household.

I'm sure she would appreciate messages of encouragement.

Here's the first: Matt, Roy, Myles and everyone at Sandwell United would like to wish Tracey and her family all the best and we all hope she has a speedy recovery.

And another from Rob O'Neill:
I would like to, on behalf of all Selly Oak Methodist FC, wish Tracy a speedy recovery. We were lucky enough to have her as our secretary for a season and so know how much of an absolute trooper she is, such a great character and so it doesn’t surprise me that even now she can make jokes and others smile. I think the league will miss her in her absence and I look forward to her return and our chats about football en route to league meetings. GET WELL SOON!

Everyone at EK Corinthia wishes Tracey a speedy recovery and we are praying for her and her family that God will be with them and they will all come out of the pastevents stronger!

We at Shiloh United would like to wish Tracey Earp a speedy recovery and we will be praying for Tracey, Jon and the family.

Saturday Review

A much better day from the fixtures perspective yesterday but conditions were not ideal. The wind was blowing in from the east and combined with the soft ground meant that what football was played was not for the purist.

Nevertheless, we got thirteen games played but once again it was City Church's game that was called off. I think they may need a few evening kick-offs towards the end of the season: We'll see. I don't think this snow is going to help their cause.

Division One

St Mary's 4 St Matthew's 0

St Mary's collect another three points with a win over their local rivals St Matthew's. These teams started life at a similar time, towards the end of the twentieth century and their fortunes were quite similar: They both spent some time at the bottom of the League before getting it together gradually more recently. St Mary's have had the upper hand more recently as today's result suggests. For St Matthew's, the loss drops them into the bottom three, bottom of a group of four teams on the cusp of the relegation zone.

Clarendon 5 King's AFC 0

Clarendon continue to match St Mary's, step for step with a similarly emphatic result from their game with King's. Everton Morrison grabs another three goals to take his tally to a staggering twenty-five in the league and there are nine matches left. There's a fair chance that he will overtake Shawn Devonport who has only five games to add to his tally. Both lads will be gunning to break the League record of 38 set last year by Tom Doran.

One minor point to make at this moment in time: St Mary's have a superior goal difference by quite some way. This may seem insignificant just now but when you consider that should both teams win all their remaining games and if Clarendon win the game when they clash, they'll be level on points.

Rowley College 1 Dynamo Kingswinford 0

Pete Bennett says: With little of note to say about the action of today's game (it was no kind of spectacle in horrible windy and sodden conditions), I'd like to just generally give credit to the players of both teams who tried so very hard to make something of it. This league remains pretty much the most competetive I've been involved in with no easy games. Our last three have been pretty much against top, middle and bottom and with a consistent side (in terms of relative strength) we have recorded 3-3, 3-2, 1-0. DK are a good footballing side who, even with the potential weakness of Gary Lamsdale in goal (sorry Gaz), gave us a good close game. They always tried to play football as we did and though I think we dominated possession and played some neat stuff, DK might easily have snatched a point. Our defenders, particularly Chrissy Staien were excellent (as again was Harvey), allowing few chances and equally DK prevented us from getting a good sight at goal.

Yet there was a goal and it came from a little bit of quality: Stew Harvey's perfectly judged corner finding Mark Southall to head in at the back post. Fitting it was, as Mark was breaking the record for Rowley 'starts' (we'll have to retire the number 8 shirt when he hangs up his boots!)

Sheldon 5 Halesowen Zion 3

Sheldon's Mark Hadden achieved legendary status yesterday as he became the first player to score 100 goals since we've been keeping records centrally and publishing them. Congratulations Mark.

The win eases Sheldon's relegation worries a little but they are still left with some way to go. Pete Bennett asked me how many points I think teams will need to escape the bottom three. I'm going for twenty-three, perhaps twenty-two. With SHeldon not having yet played half their games, I think they'll be safe.

Sheldon's Lyndon Fisher says: At last we finally managed to play a competative game of football. The first since 9th November 2008. An excellent first half for us the lads were really up for it scoring four goals: Ahat trick from an on fire Mark Hadden and a solo effort from Josh Lea.

We scored a fifth in the second half through Nathan Atkins. This was an open and attractive game of football with Halesowen playing their part, indeed they had a good second half scoring three goals as our lack of match fitness showed. Both goalkeepers made some amazing saves. We were glad to hear the final whistle but overall I think we deserved the three points.

Grant Doran adds: Without doubt the worst first half display from us for as far back as I can remember. We were out played all over the park and were deservedly being given a footballing lesson. We managed to last about five minutes before we had been opened up and had to rely on a last ditch tackle to save us from falling behind. However this was only a slight reprieve as several minutes later the ball had found it's way into the net for the first of Mark Hadden's three goals. I can't remember a great deal about the first half except I seemed to be doing a lot of running back towards my own goal only to kick the ball back to the centre circle to start again.

Half time and 4-0 down, we were pretty much looking to salvage a bit of pride knowing realistically that the game was over as a true contest. So conceding virtually from the first attack was not the best start. However the lads kept trying to move the ball around the pitch and as the game went on we created several great chances. The home keeper pulled off five great saves that on another day might well have gone in, but to be honest we didn't deserve to get too much out of the game. We did score three late on which gave the score a more even look but in truth it had been over long before.

Full credit to Sheldon who totally deserved the win and congratulations to Mark for notching his 100th goal.

Division Two

Chawn Hill Church 1 Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 5

Wolves and Perton continue to quietly go about their business whilst others seem to be making the headlines. Despite the fact that they have played more games than anyone else in the League (well done Rich, again), they have still built up a healthy lead with the odds shortening on them actually finishing first, nevermind finishing in the top three.

Tom Baugh reports on the match: There’s a famous saying in the WMCFL that goes something like, ‘there are no easy games at South Road’ and this has certainly been my experience having never previously registered a victory there in a competitive match. Indeed, Wolves went there in their final game of the season two years ago, lost and were subsequently relegated to Division 2. I can’t help but wonder whether this time around, the victory will prove vital in regaining our top flight status.

I feared the worst when we went behind early, Greg Jones stoking the ball home after a poor clearance and some penalty area pinball. However, the way in which Wolves responded showed exactly why we’re leading the pack, albeit having played significantly more games than everyone else.

Nat got the equaliser with a curling, dipping effort from the edge of the area that left the goalie completely helpless as it dropped right under the bar. With Wolves pressing hard and Chawn not able to make the ball stick up-front it was starting to become one-way traffic. Just before the break, a free-kick went all the way through to the back post where Stevie stole in to nod home.

Half-time: Chawn Hill 1 W&P 2

Having been ahead so many times against Chawn only to see them battle their way back, nobody was taking the lead for granted. The third goal was always going to be decisive and fortunately for us, we got it.

The South Road pitch is certainly compact, which seems to suit Chawn but in many ways it proved their downfall in this match. Phil was dropping throw-ins inside the six-yard box all day, ensuring Chawn were always under pressure to defend. Five minutes after the break, a half clearance fell to Olly, who dragged the ball inside, where Nat smashed home to make it 3-1. From this point, Wolves really started to push on and although Chawn kept going right to the death, they never looked like getting back into it. Nat got his hat-trick when he latched onto a flick-on and lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper.

Finally and most spectacularly, Jas got what must be our goal of the season. The ball was played out to the right where he found himself in acres of bumpy space, but instead of carrying the ball forward, he took aim and fired home a vicious dipping shot that the keeper took one look at and gave up on. I should apologise for the high pitch squeal of “its in, what a goal” as the ball left his foot, but to even take that shot on was outrageous, and to execute it in the way he did was unbelievable…especially for Jas.

Zion Athletic 1 St Boniface 1

With these two drawing, the impetus was thrown back to Wolves and perhaps Walsall somewhat, although St Boniface would still have their noses in front should all the games in hand be caught up.

Zion's Ben Lawrence says: The game today was very physical and hard fought as we fully expected. It is fair to say that St Boniface had the better of the first half, creating some clear cut chances. Unfortunately for us Jimmy Cutler pounced on a defensive mix up and took his goal well.

Zion showed resilience and battled well throughout the second half and never gave up, we have our keeper James Hamilton to thank for making some excellent saves to keep us in the game. Some managerial brilliance saw James Toomey swap from the middle of the park onto the wing and instantly made a difference by scoring a goal. Zion could have even won it having created a few good chances following their equaliser. On the whole a draw was a fair result.

Selly Oak Methodist 7 Sandwell United 2

My apologies to Martyn Vaughan and all the Sandwell lads for mis-reporting on this game: Selly Oak remain well in contention making easy meat of strugglers Sandwell. Selly Oak were quickly two up but were pegged back to 2-2 first by a Neil Taylor goal for Sandwell and then a massive lob from Robert Gill from over 40 yards. Selly Oak scored again before half time and ran away with the match in the second half scoring another four.

The result does mean that Sandwell will end the year in the bottom three. The one bright note to take from the day was another Neil Taylor goal for Sandwell, perhaps they've found a goal scorer?

Walsall Olympic 3 Renewal Solihull 0

Walsall got back to winning ways this wek-end as Nathan Brain grabs himself a hat-trick and a crucial three points for his team. Walsall's league position is decidedly mid-table at the moment but they have quite a few games to make up. Should they win these, then the league position will be decidedly promotion material.

EK Corinthia 0 West Bromwich Beacons 3

Apologies to EK and West Brom for omitting a report about their match. West Brom ease their relegation worries with a 3-0 win against old mates EK. Some of the EK players used to play for West Brom, so I'm sure there was some light-hearted banter flying around. Ashley Hamer scored a couple, including a penalty but the pick of the bunch was a cracking 18 yard header from Mike Davies.

I think the Beacons need at least one more win from their last three games but you never know, they may have done enough already.

Division Three

Lighthouse Lions 5 Shiloh United 1

Lions eat doves. Ray Rose reports: Lighthouse Lions got their season back on track with a win today. Shiloh were only able to field an 8 man team and on paper that should have meant an easy win but it was anything but. They came out fighting and for 90 minutes never gave up.

It took us until 8 minutes to score our first goal when James Doris latched onto a ball from Adam Elcock to score, this was followed by Shiloh's number 10 scoring on 11 minutes. It was not until the 25th minute we were again able to score again when Lewis Cottrill fed by Adam Elcock hit an unstoppable shot to make it 2 -1.

We had many chances but the Shiloh Goalkeeper who was having a phenomenal game kept them out, and it wasn't until the 34th minute we managed to score our third, this time Adam Elcock scoring from a ball fed through by Ryan Cowley. Just before half time Adam Elcock scored again making the score 4-1 going into the break.

During the second half Shiloh defended really well and it wasn't until the 71st minute that Adam Elcock completed his hat trick of goals with a ball from James Doris, this gave us a 5-1 win.

A good game, played in a good spirit by both teams and Shiloh would have been a much more difficult team to beat had they had all their men. We wish them well with the rest of the season.

Shiloh's Azeem Ahmad reports: A bad week for Shiloh as we had a number of key injuries which pretty much took out 75% of the squad. We were only able to take an eight man ensemble to Lighthouse, but we didnt give up. We knew that if we were going to get anything out of this game, we had to battle right to the end. Unfortunately the numerical advantage counted and they were able to take the lead.

As we were forced into the long ball game, the fact they pressed in numbers left themselves open a few times at the back and from a goal kick, Leon Brown was able to take a good touch and rocket a shot past their goalkeeper, making it 1-1. They pressed on and got a few more goals but we never gave up. The game was played in good spirits, with both sets of players enjoying the game. On any other day, they might have beaten us by a bigger scoreline, but 'keeper Kevin was again in impeccable form, which meant he made several key saves, including one from a penalty.

In the second half they were unable to get as many goals, and Shiloh proved that we are still strong at the back, and left with our heads held high. Thankfully we have a week off next week so key players are able to recover.

All the best to Lighthouse for the rest of the season, they were great hosts.

Elim Athletic 0 Rockmount United 1

I recently wrote off Rockmount's chances of ending the season in the top three but as we speak the promotion push is back on: Rockmount's Phill Turner reports: We were very glad to welcome back Jamal Thomas for a very tight game against a good Elim team. We aimed to win our third game in a row and started very well with Ashley working his magic on the left hand side. Due to the small pitch, we found it very hard to get behind the Elim defence. We went in at half time 0-0 with Gerald telling us that one goal could win the game.

In the second half, Kendelle missed a sitter but a few minutes later Paul's cross-come-shot from well outside the area was too hot for the keeper to hold. In the last fifteen minutes we were put under pressure but our defence was able to stand strong. We could have had a second goal but Junior's free-kick sailed just over the bar. We were pleased to finish the match to complete three wins with three clean sheets.

Birmingham International 1 Brierley Hill AOG 2

As predicted, Brierley Hill finally win a match against a top side. The table is that close that should Inter have held onto their lead, they would have been second but the defeat leaves them in sixth. Inter's Kwesi Okanta-Ofori texted: The babana skin prophesised caught us out. Thanks a lot Ed!

Brierley Hill's Neil Walters adds: Today proved that Football is definately a game of two halves. In the first half Birmingham International pinned Brierley Hill back in their own half for most of it (the wind didn't help either) and if it wasnt for some excellent defending from the "Legend" Jimmy Wilkes it would of been more than 1-0. Birmingham's goal was a good strike from Amin Jamand it left our keeper with no chance.

We had to make some changes at half time due to the injury of Jim Wilkes but Jon Bennett was a perfect deputy and was in full control for the second half. Our first goal was a wind assisted shot/cross from the touchline which looped over the goalie's head and the comeback was on. Brierley Hill continued to pressure and were awarded a free kick just on the edge of the area. Robbie Cox hit a thunderous left footed shot which was never going to be saved by the keeper. We were under pressure at the end but our defence stood solid and some great defending from Stu Bingham kept us in the lead.

Birmingham are a good side and have got some great players. I think they will do well and will be pushing for promotion come the end of the season.

All Nations 2 DC Dynamos 6

DC continue to ask questions of those teams above them who earlier in the season looked uncatchable by beating All Nations. DC looked a banker for the also-ran category but are now waiting in the wings for a slip-up, like Inter's I suppose. Whilst, like Rockmount, DC have played fifteen, they are now just three points off second spot. All three divisions appear to be promising a thrilling finale, which is superb for the league as a whole.

DC's Mark Crouch says: Another cold blustery morning saw DC take on All Nations in another must win game. DC started the better but lacked penetration. The wind seemingly catching every ball DC hit above waist height. All Nations went on the attack and Ben Russell made a fine ball winning tackle on the edge of our area only for the referee to give a penalty. We didn't think it was a penalty but the referee did, so that was that. All credit to All Nations' penalty taker who kept his composure and slotted the ball home. 1-0 All Nations.

Whilst I still don't feel it was a justified penalty, it did us a favour as it kick-started us in to action. Dean Cole scored a great goal to bring us level from a corner and then it was action-jackson Steve Burford's turn to score. This he did in fine style scoring a first half hat-trick, the pick of the bunch was a mazey run, beating four men with close ball control and a riffled shot into the top left hand corner which would have left holes in the goalie's hands if he had got them to it. Dean Cole scored again to make it 5-1 at half time. DC were outstanding at set plays today, especially corners where four of our five first half goals came from. All Nations' keeper made at least two really fine saves in the first half and should be really proud of his performance.

The second half saw a much better performance from All Nations, only allowing us to score one more. It was that man again Steve Burford who is making an attempt to catch Shawn Davenport, lol.

All Nations scored another to make it 6-2 and it was a lovely goal. Their attacker looked up saw our keeper off his line (but not by much) and struck a beautiful right footed curling shot from about 35 yards which nestled perfectly in the top right hand corner of our net. As good a goal as I have seen anyone score this season.

Man of the match was Steve Burford for us, their keeper for them and players of note Jon Murphy who played full 90 with thigh strain. (We only had eleven men today and no subs due to injuries and work committments). Matthew Gordon, Temo Lall, Ben Russell and Dean Cole. Back on track and all to play for but we know realistically its more for pride and position than promotion.
