Players Wanted Revival Fires are looking to bolster their squad for the coming season. If you are interested in signing for them, please contact Steve Rose on 07909 520357 or via email on steve.rose2009@hotmail.co.uk. MBD United are looking for a new manager, club secretary and a quite a few new players, especially a goalkeeper. Maybe if you have a team but don't have enough players we could think about merging the two or something like that. We want players of quality and maybe with some experience of WMCFL who will improve our team for next season's promotion push. Text Karl on 07789906419 for anymore information on the matter, cheers. Champions
Church are on the look-out for new players and have a trials

League Player of the Year Back in 2005 we introduced the League Player of the Year award. Without the TV cameras, it's a little tricky to really establish who is the best player in each division but this is the next best thing: It's a bit of fun that adds to the Presentation night. After every game, the club secretary will nominate a man of the match from the opposition and mark his shirt number down on the match report form. At the end of the season, Neil Kovàcs League Secretary collates the data and at this time of year we publish the top few. The players with the most votes from each division are announced at the awards night, which this year is this Saturday. Previous winners can be seen in the Archive section. Congratulations to everyone. If your picture does not appear below or on the general scorers' pages, please send me one in, I'd really like to have a photo of everyone. With the advancement in technology, cameras on phones seem to be much better these days. I was sent an image the other day and was staggered by the quality, so just text me one to my phone. Just one small tip though: Photos seem to come out much better if you take them outside in daylight on an overcast day. The winners from each club this year are as follows:

Darren Moore at the Presentation Night I'm pleased to announce that Darren Moore will be at this year's Presentation Night. Darren currently plays for Burton Albion but was a rock at the heart of the West Bromwich Albion defence from 2001 to 2005. He has also played for several other clubs including Portsmouth and Derby County and represented Jamaica in three full internationals. The presentation night is on Saturday 28 May at the Birchley Sports and Social Club, above Lion Farm changing rooms Brunel Road, Oldbury B69 1JD. |

Players' Player of the Year I've just sent out the nomination forms for Players' Player of the Year. If you've played more than five games for your club, then you get one vote to nominate who you think was the best player you came up against in the division you played in this season. Your club secretary will be collecting the votes for your team, unless anyone else fancies the job. The winners for each division will be announced at the presentation night on 28 May. Last season was the first year we ran the award. Shaun Green from St Mary's, Jamie Williams from Selly Oak and David Walker from Common Ground won last year's. |

Over 35s Veterans' Division I was approached this week concerning starting a Veterans' division. I've not discussed this with the Management Committee as yet but I'm sure we would be able to put something together should there be sufficient interest and ratification from the powers that be. I would suggest that players for the coming season would need to be born before say 1 September 1976, making everyone over 35 who competes. But all other conditions would have to be the same as regular clubs; that includes registering with the County FA at a cost of around £70 and paying normal league fees. We would need at least four clubs committed to joining to make it work. So if you're interested get in touch and we'll see how far it gets. This would need to get through the usual AGM, which as you can see is set for 24 June, so we need to get things together fairly swiftly with concrete proposals by 14 June at the latest. |

City Church - Division One Champions City Church 5 King's AFC 0 Congratulations to City Church, who win perhaps the most enthralling Division One Championship in our history. After six years in the league and from humble beginnings, City have risen right to the top of the league and are the fifteenth different name on the trophy. They are the fifth different club in the last six years, which is always great to see. They also thwarted Clarendon's hearty attempt at the 'double', a feat not achieved since 1994. City started life in the second division in 2005, finishing sixth in their first season. They worried Chawn Hill in the quarter-finals of the Cup; Chawn went on to win the league by seven points that year but but were held and won on penalties against a City side that perhaps showed the green shoots that flourished today. They were promoted along with Rowley the following year after going toe-to-toe with them. They followed their promotion with a tough term, gleaning just 15 points from their 18 games and only just avoiding relegation back to Division Two. The last two seasons have been better, very much building every year and collecting the Cup in 2010. Many clubs seem to come and go, with people walking away unable to stick the course but the story is different with City. It just goes to show what solid endeavour and perseverance does. Louis Quaintance
is
first off the press: Today City sealed the title in style with a ruthless,
clinical display spearheaded by James Forrest. For parts of the match
King's played the prettier football but as so often this year James
Forrest made the difference: He pounced on every mistake to complete
a hat-trick in the first half. Other goals followed from Yeo and Atkins
but the real credit today should go to the boss Martin.
It has been a long season and his devotion to the team as well as his
ability to make creative decisions when things seemed lost is worth
a mention. Finally its worth mentioning Ian who work behind the scenes has freed Martin up to do what he does best; lead by example. Martin Ogbourn
adds:
"Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power
and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!" (Revelation
7 v 10). This season the semi final debacle was the defining moment. Sometimes adversity can have a galvanising effect on a team and it has been a remarkable recovery from that shambles. After the defeat it was important to reassess our priorities and regain our team spirit. We have never been a 'win at all costs' team and that is how we will remain. As for the match itself we expected a tough encounter today versus the Division 1 form team, King's and they were certainly competitive throughout with a fair share of tackles and confrontations. The key was scoring early through Forrest which was followed by another diving header to give a 2-0 lead. A crucial third just before half time gave us breathing space after a sticky patch where we struggled to keep hold of the ball. A first half hat-trick from Forrest was just rewards for his contributions this season in an amazing scoring streak from midfield. During the second half the game remained physical as frustration increased for King's as the City defence stood firm in one of their best defensive displays of the season. Dyke and Youlden had great performances and Campbell was as commanding as ever. Stokes swept up and covered the hard yards and Chattaway looked comfortable. King's had very few opportunities from open play even though they passed the ball well and had good pace. Yeo scored another headed goal and Atkins came off his sun lounger to slot home after a good through ball from Stokes. It was only when the fifth goal was put away did we start the celebrations! I have to give praise to the whole squad: We have consistently had 16-18 players available each week. The team spirit, commitment and attitude has been first rate all season. However, we have had our fair share of strops, injuries, setbacks and tantrums. (strops and tantrums!-LOL-Ed). We have also played some fantastic football, scored crackers, late winners, missed sitters, laughed and battled hard for one another. Special mention to those who did not get on today such as Louden (who has had terrible luck with injuries), Colvin, Melia and Quaintance who have all contributed greatly this season. The pace of Stokes, Quaintance, L.Youlden and Forrest, the experience of Campbell and Melia, the passing of Atkins, Hunter, Colvin and Garwood, the determination of Thomas and Yeo, the strength of Cooper, B.Youlden, Dyke and Sheppard, the shot stopping of Chattaway, the shooting of Snelgrove and Louden and the organisation of McDonald have all lead to the perfect combination this season. Congratulations to Clarendon, Junction 10 and Rockmount for their successes this season and thanks to the wmcfl committee for all of their efforts and dedication to the league. Finally all glory and praise needs to go to the giver of life, Jesus Christ."Great is the lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom." (Psalm 145 v 3). Clarendon 2 Amblecote 0 Clarendon saw out the season with a 2-0 win at home to Amblecote. In the end, the result was academic. Tommy Woodward says: Congratulations to all at City Church, especially Dave Cooper who has now won the Division One title with four different clubs. Louis Williams adds: Well done to City, they came good at just the right time. Champions Church 2 St Mary's 2 Shawn
Devonport says: Firstly a big well done to City Church, four
weeks back when we decided to take our foot of the pedal they gave
us a spanking at their place. It's slightly frustrating on our part
because if we had turned up that day and got the points we could have
been the ones in the position to pounce but we have been poor the
last four weeks and today was no different in the main. But back to
the big well done to City, over a season they have been more consistent
and put a run together when it counted, they beat us, King's, St Mary's
and Clarendon in the last month and we've all finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th
and 5th so they deserve it! Dave Bignell adds: Firstly, congratulations to City Church on their league win. A really well organised team on and off the pitch and a great bunch of lads with some of the best players in the league on their books. We look forward to trying to wrestle their crown off them next season! St Matthew's 1 EK Corinthia 1 EK secure tenth place with a 1-1 draw against their fellow relegationist St Matthew's yesterday. Whilst the point seemed like a pride issue, it may prove a little more than that. With Champions Church threatening to fold, it may be that they will count as a relegated team should they pull out. DIVISION TWO Sheldon 2 Sporting Zion 1 A big 'congratulations' to Sheldon too, as they squeeze into second place and secure a promotion place. We have had several comments about character and commitment on these pages over the last few weeks. Sheldon were relegated in bottom spot by some way last season and have done extremely well to bounce back so quickly. Lighthouse in third are a great team too, so it was some feat to beat them. Rowley College 1 Chawn Hill Church 2 Pete Bennett says: Bit of an anticlimax today, if the truth’s told. We knew we could secure 4th if we could win and had a narrow 2-3 reverse (last minute) to avenge yet we just never rose to the challenge provided by the Chawn lads. We’d lost Christie to a late fitness test but still had a strong side and Chawn were forced to start their aging secretary, fresh from a 12 hour shift. Truth’s told Neil put in a tidy shift at right back until Paulie Taylor arrived. By that time they’d had most of the game and we’d scored a wonder goal. Leon Mitchell hit one that was barely seen on its way in let alone stopped. It was 1-0 still at half time and having played up the slope we were content, thinking we’d be better second half. In fact the game continued in much the same vein. Dale Bedford dominated the midfield and their two forward lads kept our defence busy. However we were probably still creating the better chances. Stew and Olly had missed chances to extend our lead in the first half. In the second it took an equaliser and then a winner (both headers from dead balls) to make us really play. Craigy came on and made an instant impression. Olly had one cleared off the line and we at least put them under pressure but they held on resolutely for a deserved win. Luckily we were able to finish fourth and again turn round a poor start. A big thanks to those of you who allow us to enjoy Saturdays (well some of them). James and Shawn have been impeccable with officials and fixtures in a terrible season for weather and the decisive action on this from Neil and the committee certainly saved many a team from going out of business. Also to Ed for this excellent football forum. This was Rowley’s 20th season and we’re already signed up for our 20th in the WMCFL next year (we started elsewhere). This is possibly a greater achievement than anything we’ve won. All the best guys. |

Clarendon 4 EK Corinthia 1 Game on: All set for a super Saturday. But who will win the league? I can't bear to look. Tonight, the two sides started tentatively. I checked my watch and only five minutes had elapsed; it felt like fifteen. Chances were few. One of the Clarendon forwards had a good chances but placed his shot wide. Then on twenty minutes, the ball was floated towards the EK box. The defenders failed to clear and suddley Jason Greene had the ball at his feet and made no mistake, drilling the ball into the net from ten yards. Then five minutes later, an EK defender played a harmless ball back to his keeper. To be honest, I looked away and glanced back to see the ball trickling into the EK net. At that point I started to think 'how many?' but EK were having none of it. On 38 minutes, a foul was awarded centrally about 25 yards from the Clarendon goal. Up stepped Che' O'Connor who hit the sweetest shot that Obi in the Clarendon goal simply stood and watched. It hit the net like a cruise missile. Suddenly, EK were back in it and made life quite uncomfortable for Clarendon, who were glad to hear the half-time whistle. The break was good for Clarendon. They came out for the second half and immediately pressed EK back. Jason Greene spurned a great opportunity but Everton Morrison put his away seconds later. An EK goal-kick was met with a solid Clarendon header that Pablo ran onto. He knew it was coming and ran from deep. Once again EK were spurred on by this Clarendon goal but their defence stood firm. On 75 minutes, the tie seemed over as a contest as Jason Greene scored again. The final substitutions were made but the action wasn't quite over. Dickie Standford, who'd been a bit of a thorn in the Clarendon side, especially at set pieces was tripped in the box as he turned. EK had one last chance to get back into the game but sadly for them, the penalty was well saved by Alton Stewart. The ball rebounded to the EK penalty taker and with Stewart prone it seemed a simple task to tap the ball into the net but the ball seemed to get stuck under his feet and it was safely cleared. Clarendon had several opportunities to extend their lead in the last ten minutes but were unable to convert any of them. 4-1 was a little tough on EK who at times were in this game. Oddly, they seemed at their best just after Clarendon had scored. Whilst I think that Clarendon were always in control of the final outcome, there were a couple of incidents that EK will perhaps rue: Firstly, the unkind bobble that led to Clarendon's second and should they have scored their penalty, well that could have been 3-2. Having said that, Clarendon always seemed to have another gear. So, it's off to the last Saturday. Should City Church beat King's, everthing else will be academic. |

Saturday Review Wow! What an end to the season. Who'd have thought that Clarendon and St Mary's would have lost their last two games! Division One resembles a Moto GP 125cc race, where the leaders swap places several times on the last lap. As we come out of the last bend onto the winning straight, we have three riders abreast, so long as Clarendon don't fall off in their match against EK mid-week, which is a common occurance in the 125s as well. All three of City, St Mary's and Clarendon can easily still win the title. They've all got tough games: City will win the league if they beat King's but King's have only dropped two points out of twenty-one and they should have won the game they drew. They've beaten Clarendon during that time and before that, only lost by one to Zion and St Mary's: Their form is up with the best. And King's will want to win this one too; a fourth place finish is guaranteed with three points. Clarendon need to avoid defeat against EK in the week and then play Amblecote at the week-end. Amblecote beat Champions Clarendon last year 2-1 on the last day of the season. Whilst their form has been patchy this year, at times they've blown-away top teams. Wins against Zion Athletic, City Church and St Mary's will worry the out of form Clarendon. Although, Amblecote have the ability to play very poorly too: 1-7 vs Champions Church and losses against the teams down the bottom end of the table too: Who knows in this one. St Mary's are away at Clarendon: Shawn Devonport says 'We'll win that one'. I'm under the impression that Champions Church will be folding at the end of the year, so I'm sure they will play with gusto. Champions won the game at St Mary's but St Mary's, despite losing the last two have played well and have not been turned over. Should Clarendon beat EK on Wednesday, St Mary's odds will be the longest to regain the title they won in 2009. But the way it's been, I wouldn't bet against it. Oh and to add a little extra stir, Champions can finish fourth if they win. DIVISION
ONE Martin Ogbourn says: We said with six fixtures left that if we could get 18 points we would give ourselves a sniff in the title race, but after this result we know we still have one more match to go. In this fixture in the past three seasons at Row Heath we have seen a 5-6, 5-4 and now a 4-3! Defences were never on top again, although to be fair conditions were difficult and it was always going to be an attritional battle rather than a free flowing game. During the past week it has been our squad strength which has seen us through with many of the unsung stalwarts such as Youlden, Melia, Campbell, Snelgrove and Charlie Dyke (who has been on the bench for most of the season and started his first league game today) coming to the fore when the squad was stretched and we needed people to step up. Forrest and Garwood went off in the second half with hamstring strains as the heavy fixture list took its toll and Yeo has been our only fit and available striker in the past week so we showed fantastic spirit and heart again today to gain the three points. The game itself was fairly even early on as the usual jousting took place. A Cooper bullet header gave City the lead, but with one of their first real attacks Clarendon hit back with Pablo slotting home to equalise. There were few chances in the first half although Clarendon shaded a post from a header. Much of the play was concentrated in the narrow centre of the pitch with little width and lots of long balls, freekicks, long throws, crunching tackles and headed clearances. Possibly the first pivotal moment occurred when a Hunter freekick was fumbled by the Clarendon keeper to give City a precious 2-1 lead at half time. We knew the second half was not going to be pretty, but we had kept ourselves in the game. Much of the second half was a blur (in more ways than one with the heavy rain), but Clarendon came out strongly as City were dropping too deep. I think it was Obi who scored at the far post after a lofted free-kick evaded everyone else. Another Clarendon goal followed. However this seemed to change the mindset of both teams as Clarendon seemed to step back, and with tactical and personnel changes City moved up a gear and started applying the pressure. The equaliser came from our emergency striker Melia who showed all his experience to use his 'height' to score a goal of the season candidate from about one inch thanks to a Dyke assist. This was only the start of the late drama though. A clean Campbell header was zoning into the top corner of the Clarendon goal before a Woodward tip over the bar saved the goal, but he didn't wait for the red card. The subsequent penalty was pelted against the crossbar (I think it is probably still shaking!) by Chattaway and scrambled clear to leave the scores level. City knew the momentum was now with City despite this setback. As City poured forward Yeo got behind the back four and finally got his reward for his all round efforts when a looping header ensured the winner with a few minutes left. There were more long balls and free-kicks to defend, but we manned the barricades and ensured a third win in a week and five on the trot in the league. I don't think I have ever seen so many headers in a game since Jack Charlton's Ireland were in their pomp! Dyke, Stokes and Thomas deserve special mention for their wholehearted displays. Today we showed a different aspect to our game as we battled it out and 'won ugly'. City will enjoy the week off and rest weary limbs before looking forward to the form team King's next week at fortress Row Heath. We praise God as always. St Mary's 1 Zion Athletic 3 Jallen says: Nice to sign off with a win and to contribute to the drama at the top. No disrespect to St Mary's but it could have been more like five or six was it not for their brilliant keeper making some fantastic saves. This season has been good to build our team and show those out there our intention to break up the big two. If we can keep this squad together and some strong additions and find a little more consistency, I'm sure we'll be around at the summit of Division One next season. John Myatt adds: Zion started well but we then dominated until a huge mix up led to a Zion goal after half-time. We then pushed, needing the win and to be honest they could have got more, hitting us on the break numerous times. Missing players but no excuses. EK Corinthia 2 Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 3 Wolves sign off with a third win on the trot, in fact a third 3-2 win on the trot, which makes their final outcome look highly respectable after their 'predicted' relegation spot. They finish the season one place above the automatic relegation places, setting an example to the other club in Wolverhampton that they hope to duplicate. EK are fair buried in the mire at the bottom, proving the 'you need twenty points to stay up' theory. Should they take six points from their last two, they can achieve twenty-one but Clarendon await on Wednesday night. Tom Baugh adds: We went into this one knowing a draw would more than likely see us retain our Division One status, with EK still to play Clarendon, but were keen to get the job done ourselves with a decisive victory. Paggie reshuffled the deck and reverted to a 4-5-1 formation bringing Mozza back into the fold and that gamble paid off immediately when he bundled home the opener inside the first 15 minutes. Wolves were quicker out of the blocks and were unlucky not to be a couple of goals up by the time EK dragged themselves back into it. Olly scampered through only for the goalkeeper to make a brave block and the same player saw a point blank range header saved just prior to the interval. But the home side came out flying in the second period and were camped out in the Wolves half for the first 15-20 minutes. Despite this, the equaliser was actually a breakaway from a rare Wolves attack; their forward carrying the ball half the length of the pitch and angling a superb finish to level the scores. Wolves responded almost immediately though with Nat hitting the post before Mozza latched onto a brilliant cross from Olly to bag his second of the day. Straight from the kick-off, back came EK, with another fine piece of individual skill ending with a snap-shot that flew in just under the outstretched arm of Rich. At this point, it was anyone’s guess as to what would happen next, but fortunately for us, another scramble and another shot that came off the post eventually fell to Luke who made no mistake from six yards out. With only a few minutes left and EK knowing they probably needed two goals to avoid a bottom three finish, I think a bit of belief drained out of them and we saw it out fairly comfortably. So, a highly satisfactory end to a largely difficult season for Wolves. I said to Paggie after the final whistle, that there was legitimately a point in the season when I wondered whether we’d even win a game, let alone avoid relegation. But massive credit to all the lads for sticking together, finding some resolve and digging out some quite unbelievable results. In particular, the home win over City Church proved to be a huge moment, although a thrilling four all at Amblecote will also live long in the memory. We’re a tight unit and the nucleus of players we have in the squad have now been around for the last seven or eight years, with a few coming and going each season. The WMCFL unquestionably gets better each season and as a consequence, it becomes harder to compete at the very top. We’d all love to be challenging for the title or getting to the cup final, but for me personally, it’s more about those special individual moments of agony, ecstasy and laughter, that make getting out of bed on a Saturday morning worthwhile. Thank you to the WMCFL for another rollercoaster ride (and good luck to the three teams scrapping it out for the title next weekend). DIVISION TWO Sporting Zion 2 Junction Ten Village 2 Sporting take a point from Champions Juction Ten Village that could prove important in their battle with Rowley for fourth. I can see a bit of a shuffle this close season with comings and goings, so you never know how important one place can be. I think that Junction Ten come closest to 'dominating' one of our divisions this year. I'm not sure how many they'll win Division Two by but there's a couple of wins and more between them and the next club; Lighthouse or Sheldon. After the initial settling, there was really only one name on the trophy this year but even Junction Ten have only won fourteen of their twenty games. It will be interesting to see how they do against the top sides next season. Rowley College 8 Dynamo Kingswinford 1 Pete Bennett says: Relegating a team is never a pleasant experience and the only memory I have of this before was beating St Boniface 9-3 at the end of the nineties. Then we faced a team resigned to their fate: today, despite the scoreline, we faced a DK side determined to have a real go! With Brian and Phil from Solihull on the touchline we realised how important our result was to these two well-established WMCFL teams (ironic since the two of them have probably been most responsible for keeping us outside of the top three this season!). However our main thought was still on our own ambitions and good form in a division that simply has no easy matches. The early initiative was DK’s. They attacked with determination and plenty of ability, despite losing a lad early on to a nasty but accidental blow to the face. Unfortunately for them we also were looking lively forward and their endeavour was shaken when Leon headed expertly beyond their excellent keeper from Ben’s cross. The half continued fairly evenly but we had by then started to play and were happy to take part in an open game of attacking football. Leon returned the favour for Ben to make it 2-0 and then we had a couple of narrow escapes at which point a real contest might have been on the cards since DK were giving as much as they were getting. The third goal thus was vital and it was another good one. Chris McIvor split the DK defence with an Iniesta like pass for Olly Staien to slot home. Christie, who was the centre of all we did today, then forged to the line and his low cross was turned in by one of their unfortunate defenders. Half time 4-0. With nothing to lose DK continued to press and again had some forward pressure. I think the fifth, Olly’s second, smartly taken killed them off. Thereafter we made changes, ending 3-4-3 and creating a bucket-load of chances. Craig Micklewright made a welcome return from a collarbone injury and immediately scored. Sammy forced one in from close range that their defender could only help in and then Olly gloriously completed his hat-trick. This was a really good performance from us. I wish Jason and DK all the best. Their relegation is further evidence of what a strong league Division 2 has been in the last couple of seasons. Congratulations to the irrepressible Brian Follows who made the trek to see us do the business! MBD United 0 Bournbrook Athletic 4 A good win for Bournbrook sees them secure eighth place in Division Two. Eighth doesn't sound too good but it was only a couple of wins from fourth, the division has been that close in the centre places this year. A sorry end to a disappointing season for MBD: I think when they all show up, MBD would have been capable of winning almost every week in this division and could make a decent stab a Division One. But it was not to be. DIVISION THREE Rockmount United 2 Living Hope Church 2 Steve
Farley says: And so in the end it all boiled down to the last
90 minutes. After all the hard work could we win promotion? Rockmount
wasn't the easiest team to have to face and so it proved. LHC looked lacklustre
and finding it difficult on the sloping pitch. Rockmount looked sharp,
their number 6 and 11 were pulling us apart, then on ten minutes some
good one touch passing put one of the strikers through on goal, 1-0 to
Rockmount. On the half hour mark saw a free header from a corner, 2-0
to Rockmount. Half time saw a change of formation and our first substitution
and all of a sudden we were competing properly, Rockmount were allowed
less time on the ball and LHC began to look stronger. On 65 minutes Lee
joined Brainy as the second striker and within five minutes we were back
in the game. Bob fed Lee down the middle and with acres of space he took
his time, rounded the keeper and slotted home, 2-1 to Rockmount. Ten minutes
later Brainy turned provider, this time robbing the keeper who had left
his area. The resultant cross found Lee who beat his marker and directed
a perfect ball into an empty net, 2-2. In the dying seconds Brainy very
nearly won the game only for his achilles to give up on him as he was
running in for a simple tap in. Well done to two-goal Lee for saving the
day and well done the lads on a brill second half performance with a special
mention for Matt who pipped Lee and Bob for our man of the match. Sandwell United 0 Beacon Church 2 Mark
Broome says: A strange game today to finish our season. Having
played so well for so long today it just didn't happen for us at all.
For once we started well and we had several clear goal scoring chances
inside the first 20 minutes, rounding the keeper on two occassions only
to shoot wide. All credit to Beacon, who have improved a lot during the
course of the season and they slowly got back into the game. We were missing
Mark Allsop and Jay today and it showed. They usually mop up any loose
balls, but today everthing fell to a Beacon player. The opening goal was
a fantastic run from a Beacon player and a neat finish as well aka Messi
v Real Madrid! 0-1 half-time. Steve
Rose says: First of all, all praise goes to God for what has
been a blessed season for 2010/11. |

Mid-Week Review DIVISION ONE St Mary's 1 City Church 2 So, the pendulum swings back again and it looks like it's wobbling three ways! Martin Ogbourn says: It was a closely fought, tough, yet fair game tonight and a good advert for wmcfl. The match was played in a rural setting in late spring sunshine. There was very little to choose between the sides throughout the game, but the winning goal was a worthy strike from substitute Snelgrove which would have graced any match. The first half was fairly tight with few clear chances, although St Mary's had an early one-on-one chance which was well saved by Chattaway and City hit a post, but it was a cautious midfield battle. City shaded possession (half time 0-0). The second half sprung to life after another Forrest goal, but this seemed to spur on St Mary's who hit back from a tight angle. St Mary's had headed chances from set plays and City had other headed chances and a couple of one-on-ones. Both sets of attacking players had their fair share of opportunities. Just as the game appeared to be drifting to a score draw Snelgrove controlled a ball on his chest and with three defenders converging on him struck a dipping volley into the top corner to leave the excellent St Mary's keeper motionless! A nervy ending to the game was survived by City and the league title remains alive for the top three! City move on to their fourth meeting with Clarendon this season (and a third 'cup final' in a week!) and a chance to avenge their semi final mauling! We have responded fantastically well to that defeat and have shown our strength of squad today as a 45-mile round journey after work during the start of the holiday season is never ideal! All we can do is aim to win our final two games and see what happens! Special mention to Yeo who worked tirelessly throughout, Cooper who covered every blade of grass and Forrest who looked like he was running riot with virtually every touch. Campbell and Sheppard were commanding at the back. Overall it was a great all round performance and result. It is now four unbeaten games in a row vs St Mary's. We also wish Andy Beeson all the best after he seemed to twist his knee and ended the game in a cast. Finally on another note I just wanted to say I agree with what Grant Doran said in his match report last Saturday about commitment. Sometimes some players can take things for granted (I'm not talking about the City lads this season who I can't fault, but it has not always been that way!) and don't always realise what goes into running a team. All the best to Halesowen and St Mary's as they are good clubs and bunches of lads. DIVISION TWO MBD United 2 Rowley College 5 Pete Bennett says: It’s good to be able to offer an antidote to Grant’s despair about lack of commitment (and believe me I’ve been there!). Our lads have been excellent all season at pitching up, paying up and mucking in and it paid dividends this evening. These evening kick-offs are always a problem for Amateur football (they’re too early) but all 14 of our lads were warming up on the pitch by 6.15 and even had time to put up one of the nets for the MBD lads. MBD sadly fared less well. By the time we kicked off (a little late) they were only up to nine, getting their full complement just after Stew Harvey had given us the lead from Leon’s fine cross. No sooner this than a hamstring removed one of their defenders, but not their effort attitude and skill. Despite being short (particularly of a ‘proper’ keeper: sorry Karl!) MBD have good players and if they can keep it together they will be a force to reckon with! Despite their disadvantages they kept up a good tempo and caused us more problems than they should have done. Even after fortune again favoured us with their defender slicing horribly into his own goal, MBD would not accept defeat and were soon back to 2-1 and pressing for an equaliser. We were not at our best up the hill but stunned them when Ben Fowler cracked in a beauty that no keeper would have stopped. However before we could get comfy poor defending presented a chance to Si Larmour: enough said: 2-3. Mark had a few words at half time and with the slope we created lots of chances second half, though they also continued to play some lovely football. Changes were made to reward all who’d trekked from work. Stew Harvey chipped a fourth his second which effectively ended the game and then we got a little greedy and very profligate and it was left to Leon to show how with a fine finish. We also had a classy little cameo from Wayne Dyer who stroked the ball around as we saw out an important win. |

Saturday Review DIVISION ONE King's AFC 2 Clarendon 0 As we turn our attention back to the league, the onus returns to St Mary's as Clarendon come up against a fresh King's side who take full advantage of Clarendon's League Cup hangover. This defeat means that both the top sides have just three games left and at this point St Mary's have a genuine three point lead. Also back in the picture are City Church again; whilst they appeared to have long since dropped out of the race, have to play both Clarendon and St Mary's. Should they win both these games, I think the last few days of the division could be 'interesting'. Whilst the title chase has taken a late turn, my impression is that it's far from over. I think that St Mary's have a more difficult run-in, with mid-week games to boot. For King's, they look set for a good year next season: They've won five of their last six and should have won the one they drew as well. Having strengthened mid-season, I think they'll be a force from September. City Church 4 Halesowen Zion 2 Martin Ogbourn says: In sunshine today City claimed their third league win on the bounce to keep their very slim title hopes alive as they embarked on a difficult week of fixtures! (including games versus St Mary's and Clarendon in the space of four days which would test the strength and depth of any squad!). The first 30 minutes were largely forgettable despite the reappearance of Conrad's early 90s retro green chequered shirts as our emergency second kit (and with white shorts, blue socks and Atkins yellow boots it was an interesting combination!). (See the Archive section: Click Former Clubs, then Woodgate for a look-Ed). There was a whiff of an end-of-season feel to proceedings as the swirling winds and hard bouncy surface meant it was not a game for the purist. In truth there were too many long balls from both sides. City took the lead from a bit of a goal mouth scramble as Thomas kept up his goal scoring exploits. Halesowen equalised from a strong header, but City hit back with a brace from Forrest including a rare far post header (half time 3-1). The second half improved as a spectacle as City tried to get the ball down and play more football, but it was Halesowen who hit back through Tom Doran to leave the game on a knife edge midway through the half. However, in the best passing move of the game City ensured the three points were safe when Hunter found Atkins who fired home from close range with around ten minutes left. Halesowen played their part in the game and meant it was a hard earned win for City who are now top scorers in the top flight. Melia and Yeo gave contrasting, yet impressive performances. We look forward to two top of the table clashes in this season-defining week. Grant
Doran adds:
Today's game brings down the curtain on this season and if I am honest
not a moment too soon. We turned up today with only eight regular players
having seen eight lads drop out over the course of the week. We have had
some very good games over the past few years against City but today we
just wanted to avoid getting battered and keep the result respectable.
Despite the final score the lads should be proud of themselves as we had
more than enough chances to have got something from the game and they
never stopped working and giving 100% for the team with Tom and Cocky
being the pick of the players on show, both having outstanding games.
Congratulations to City on the win and three points. Ed says: Whilst what Grant says is harsh, I really think he's got a point. I know that people have other things to do but those clubs who keep the same or very similar teams throughout the season seem to do better. Commitment is not as it was a few years back, to anything not just a football team. People do as they please and seem more selfish. Loyalty is a trait not seen so often now. Zion Athletic 4 EK Corinthia 1 Zion Athletic blow away the distraction of the Cup with a good looking result against EK, who could have done with the points themselves. Jimmy Cutler was back on the score sheet with a brace as he helped his side to a satisfying win. I think that if Zion hadn't made it all the way to the Cup Final, they may have had a better finish in Division One. But all in all it's easily their best year so far. DIVISION TWO Junction Ten Village 1 Sheldon 1 With just six matches to go, Division Two is drawing to a conclusion. Should Sheldon manage a point from their match with Sporting Zion, then they are guaranteed the runner's up spot and I think they deserve it too. Any notion that Junction Ten are just playing out their final matches was dispelled yesterday. Whilst they haven't won in two, they are playing quality sides and putting in a shift, spoiling Sheldon's celebrations in the process. We do look like we have a top three though. Whilst MBD and Sporting can catch Sheldon, it's a million to one chance with about forty goals to make up in difference. A swift glance at the tables, it's clear who the top three sides are from a goal-difference view. Lighthouse Lions 2 Rowley College 1 Pete Bennett says: Firstly let me pass on our fulsome and deserved praise to Ray and his boys on their promotion! We have managed an incredible run of form to take us from a relegation place to a crack at this today but having worked so hard for it, when the chance came we were not at the races. However the score looks we did nothing like enough to get anything out of this game and Lighthouse were worthy winners. Having been involved in competitive Amateur football (as player etc) since the 1976-77 season I’ve become familiar with archetypical games and this, for us, was from the dreaded box marked ‘Didn’t turn up’. These are important games you look forward to and then arrive in the dressing room afterwards wanting to start again having sleepwalked through! It didn’t help that Mark Southall had injured himself in the week and managed only a half at nothing like his usual level of influence but we still had a very strong team out, strong enough to win this game and physically more imposing than the youthful Lions. (I won't what the net weigh-in would have been of the two sides?-Ed). We actually started well and went close twice early before they scored a beauty against the run of play: great move and shot. Then we faltered and hardly recovered. They played neat stuff and Adam was always a threat. In the middle of the half they were entirely on to and Adam cracked a beautiful volley that Lee saved brillianty. However we ourselves then returned the favour by scoring against the run of play, Christie holding off two defenders before slotting home. As we had been up the slope first half we turned around with new resolve. Despite excellent performances for us from Nathan Hylton and Moses the second half was a damp squibb. Almost as soon as we had strutted out, pumped up than we conceded from a direct free kick. The rest was huff and puff against their organised determination, leaving us with that horribly deflated feeling and no-one to blame but ourselves. We must pick up quickly and see how high we can finish, starting Wednesday at MBD. Ray Rose
adds:
Firstly thankyou to Pete from Rowley, for being a gentleman at their
ground and ours. He likes to play good football and is very gracious
in defeat. His team are a great credit to him and we hope to see them
soon in the top division. Well we have done it! A big test next season but just to say from goalkeeper Bryn to Adam Elcock these lads have grown into a quality team and am very proud of every one of them. A big thanks to Lighthouse Baptist Church for all their support and backing. Also Darren for all he does for Lighthouse Lions. A very big thanks to Adam Elcock for all his commitment to the team this season, from goal scorer to manager, he has had a great season. Once a gain to all the lads well done you are all a credit to Lighthouse. MBD United 2 St Thomas Aldridge 1 St Thomas put a lid on what has been a decidedly disappointing season that has seen them drop through WMCFL with alarming speed. The irony for them has been, like yesterday, marginal defeats throughout in most cases. I would add as evidence the fact that in both this season and last St Thomas conceded just 56 goals; 112 in two seasons is hardly poor. There'll be many a club that'd rather not look to check if their goals against is worse than that. But sadly, you get nothing for losing 2-1 and they've drawn or just lost games too frequently. But yesterday saw MBD march on to another 2-1 win. To add salt to St Thomas' wounds, it's been MBD's favourite scoreline, with them winning 2-1 for the fourth time this season. I think they've missed out on promotion though, taking on the mantle that Selly Oak vacated having finished fourth twice. Bournbrook Athletic 1 Chawn Hill Church 3 Another win for Chawn gives them mid-table respectability, after dragging their heels for much of the year. Two goals from Greg Jones helped his side to Chawn's third win on the trot; a three goal win in their last match will return their goal-difference to neutral. Despite losing yesterday, Bournbrook will easily escape the bottom three and like Chawn will want a win from their last game against MBD next week. Despite this loss, Bournbrook have ended the season in reasonable shape after a couple of turbulent years. DIVISION THREE Darkhouse 0 Sandwell United 5 Mark Broome says: After conceding the title to a deserved Rockmount last week and ending the week in fifth (it's very tight in Division Three) we were determined to finish the season on a high note. We had a full squad of players available again today, so we saw Dibble and Aaron start in a more attacking line-up with Stu Winters in midfield and Mark Allsop rested. We
were a little slow to start but Aaron got us on our way with a close
range poacher's finish after about fifteen minutes after some great
work on the wing by the returning Theo from injury. It was some good
play again by Dibble, Theo and Stu which lead to our second. The ball
eventually being cleared to the edge of the box, only for Matty Hammond
to hammer in an exquisite second. We really started to play towards
the end of the half and bombarded the Darkhouse goal. 0-2 half-time. Living Hope Church 6 Pye Green Towers 2 Just three games left to play in Division Three and perhaps what was one of the most eagerly awaited: Rockmount vs Living Hope, or at least it was. Living Hope may need to win that one to claim third place. After faultering in early April, when they were in a position to take the title, they seem to have the wheels firmly back on, not least yesterday as they knocked six past Pye Green. Whilst they may be disappointed to have finished third or fourth, a quick glance at last year's table suggests a massive improvement: Last season LHC won just four matches all year, conceding 90 goals in the process. This year they've won three times as many games and reached the quarter-finals of the Cup. Whilst their run-in has not been so good, Pye Green have enjoyed greater success this year: A 70% increase in points taken from two fewer games as well, conceding just 57 instead of 87 in their debut season. Steve
Farley adds:
With a heavy head wind floating down the pitch it was never going to
be easy. At the kick off Pye Green had the advantage of the breeze behind
them. Undeterred and despite our lack of possesion when we got the ball
our through balls to Brainy and co were holding up nicely in the wind.
With some great deliveries first Lee and then Brainy were on target
to see us 2-0 up in the first 12 minutes. Pye Green wasted no time though
and a quick thinking shot from a free kick caught us flat footed 2-1.
Pye Green ralllies and with the wind advantage they battered us with
Seb in goal the busiest player on the pitch, He parried one great strike
onto the crossbar and cut out countless corners - well done Seb! |

League Cup Final Clarendon 2 Zion Athletic 0 A real big thank you to everybody that turned up at the Cup Final last night. It was a superb event. There were many familiar faces from right across the league. Thank you to every one who helped put the match on, especially Neil Kovàcs, who put in loads of effort with the programmes and on the gate, Richard Webster and Graham Brazier who set up the match with Stourbridge FC and their work on the night and James Orotayo who also helped make the night run smoothly. We'd also like to thank Ian Pilkington, Chairman of Stourbridge FC for the loan of their ground, to the match officials: referee Daren Appleby, assistants Jack Donati-Bourne and Keith Rzepkowski and fourth official Dave Corrigan, who did an excellent job. We also had two great clubs, Clarendon and Zion Athletic who were both brilliant on the night. Ashley Innis (who incidentally played in his sixth Cup Final on Tuesday night) says: Tuesday evening's game was a great advert for WMCFL with both teams playing having spells where we played attacking and free flowing football. Despite news before the game that Jal (Jon Allen) was due to miss out for Zion, we knew that Zion would still field a strong side, a few of their players were coming back from injuries in recent weeks but we were never going to let that fool us into believing that Zion would not be as strong a test as they had been in the two league games we’d played them in earlier in the season. As for Clarendon we were fielding a very strong side – that said, any of the players on the bench could have slipped into the starting line-up and we’d have been equally as strong. The game started off quite tightly with neither side really getting the ball down and playing the passing football both side are capable of. I think Zion created the first chance with some good interplay between Westy and Jimmy Cutler who shot wide. As the game moved on, the real battle was on the middle of the park, with both sets of midfielders trying to get a stranglehold on play. For Zion ‘Westy’ was looking dangerous down their right-hand side, whilst for Clarendon Jason Greene and Pablo were working the channels well despite being man-marked and were supported by runs from across midfield. I can’t recall many chances of note in the first half, except when Pablo managed to wriggle out of a cul-de-sac of three Zion players to unleash a shot which hit back off the bar and away to safety. Jimmy Cutler had a few chances for Zion but nothing that really troubled our goalkeeper Obi. We went in at half time with the scores level at 0-0. We gathered our thoughts in the changing room and took on board the comments from our manager and coaches; we recognised that whilst we were not really being threatened, Zion had been the better side in the first half. Jason and Pablo were being man-marked and whilst Craig and I were interchanging our positions well on the right-hand side we knew we could create more going forward and get the ball down and start playing it around a little more. I should also add at this point that at half time it was mentioned that some criticism/banter was being directed at one of our players (who shall remain nameless) from the side…, we know who he is and I have to say he was top class in the second half and showed excellent character to ignore it and help drive us forward second half. Both sides started the second half strongly, Moses continued his ‘terrier’ like work in midfield alongside Laurie who was beginning to get on the ball a lot more and dominate the midfield. About ten minutes into the second half I played a one-two with Jason Greene about ten yards into the Zion half and found myself on the edge of the area, I shifted the ball to the right of their defender and having caught it well my shot beat the keeper at his left hand side. In my 6th Cup Final I was delighted to get my first goal. Form then on the tide started to turn and I felt Clarendon were always going to go on and win … credit to Zion, players like Cutler, Toomey, and Westy (who for me was their best player on the night) persevered and kept going. We created several more chances, both Pablo and I shot just wide when we both should have scored, before Matt Williams picked a beaut of a pass to find Jason Greene, through one-on-one with the keeper he looped his shot over him and into the top corner. I could see the belief drain out of some of the Zion players and some heads dropped. Ethan, who we knew could be dangerous for Zion picked up an injury midway through the second half and losing him was a blow for Zion, but they kept working hard and credit to them for that. Further chances fell to Luke Pinnock, Jason Green and Pablo before the end as well as a couple of close chances for Zion. Tommy Woodwood came on in midfield and picked up the pace well, remaining calm in possession and utilising the ball well, Aaron replaced Luke and posed a different threat down the left with his pace and trickery – resulting in further chances for us, and Big Greene replaced me near the end and held the ball up well. Its fair to say over the course of the game we probably deserved to win. Our defence of Craig, Matt, Roger and Daley stood up well against most that Zion threw at us and we knew with our strong midfield and two of the best strikers in the league if we played like we could we would run out winners on the night as we did. All of Zions players should hold their heads high - each of them gave 100% despite some carrying injuries. A special mention to a few other people too, Louis Williams and Selvin Gayle for their encouragement, direction and motivation throughout the season and through the night on Tuesday, also to our substitutes who again from the side encouraged and motivated. A well done to the referees who helped to ensure the game remained free flowing and absent of incidents, there were a few hearty challenges from both sides but the referee and his assistants remained in control throughout the evening and let the game flow well. I’d also like to give a big thank you on behalf of all of the players to all of those who gave up their Tuesday night and turned out to support both teams – it really is appreciated and the difference those cheers (and boos) make cannot be under-estimated so a big thank you to all of those who came along. Finally to the league and relevant committee members for organising the venue and to Stourbridge Town for letting us use their ground and facilities For Clarendon we now turn our attention to Saturday and continue our quest to retain the league title and complete an unprecedented hat-trick of Charity Shield, Cup and the League. |

Saturday Review DIVISION THREE Rockmount United 1 Sandwell United 0 First and foremost, congratulations to Rockmount who clinched the title today. Commiserations to Sandwell, Brierley Hill, Living Hope and Common Ground, who all at some point were in the race for the championship this year. There have been some ups and downs but I think everyone will agree that Rockmount deserved it: They are the league's top scorers, they held onto their unbeaten run for almost twelve months and have been the dominant force in Division Three; the team everyone wanted to beat, they set the standard. I work every other Saturday these days and when I'm not working, the wife usually has something organised, or I'm skiing. But today I managed to escape and took off to Kingstanding to watch the game of the day. And what a game! Sandwell were certainly on top in the early exchanges and could easily have capitalised. They had about three corners in the first five minutes and Sandwell players got a head onto all three, but no-one could direct their efforts on target. There were periods during the first twenty minutes when Sandwell seemed encamped in the Rockmount half but the Rockmount defence stood firm. And I always say that if you cannot score when you are on top, then you'll regret it. Also, if you're a team taking a pounding and you survive, you know the victory is there for the taking. Towards the end of the half, Rockmount began to press and on one particular break they perhaps should have scored. The Sandwell defence were just overrun and it was a two on two situation. The ball broke to Chris South on the edge of the area who tried to curl the ball into the right corner but missed the target. So the scores were all square going into the interval at 0-0 and I think this was a fair reflection of the play. Just before half time there was a clash of heads between Charles 'Squaddie' Campbell and the Sandwell keeper. Squaddie came off worse but was patched up with a bandage but completed the game for his side. Both sides seemed set up with a secure back line. I was impressed with both teams' back fours today, particularly the centre-halves from both sides. In front of them were defensive midfielders who were working tirelessly despite the heat. And then the keepers who put in excellent shows for both teams. Both sides needed a win in this tie, perhaps Sandwell more so and both teams turned up with that in mind. I had a chat with the ref, Keith Rzepkowski and his two assistants, Liam Rivers and Dave Griffiths, all three of whom performed excellently and they agreed that it was a great match between two even teams who had turned up to compete. Keith will be running the line at the Cup Final on Tuesday. So the second half kicked off in the same vein as the first: A cautious but full-blooded approach. No-one could be accused of lacking motivation or passion for the cause today, the tackles were flying in from both sides. Sandwell had a chance to take the lead about ten minutes into the half but the attack was stifled by the effective Rockmount defence. Sandwell's forwards were constantly out-numbered by the Rockmount defenders. But the ball was immediately dispatched upfield and broke to Matthew Parnell who planted the ball into the left-hand corner of the net. Today, Sandwell were unable to field their full-strength team as their top-scorer Robert 'Dibble' Gill was footballed out. As with many players, Dib plays for other sides and his schedule has been punishing and intense. With our league kicking off at 10:30 on a Saturday, many players go off into other leagues later into the week-end. They missed him today. When he came on it was clear to see that should he have been fully fit and played 90 minutes, he may have scored. He plays the lone striker role very well, like Torres when he was good. Sandwell's chances came and went, with Mark Allsopp's perhaps the closest: A free-kick was floated over from Stu Winters but Mark's effort clipped the top of the bar. Rockmount had several chances to extend their lead, hitting the inside of the post and later the Sandwell keeper pulled off a stunning double save, palming the second shot onto the bar. But I think that 1-0 perhaps summed up the game: A narrow but deserved win for Rockmount. So this was the first bit of silverware for Rockmount, they're hoping that it'll be the first of many. It's been a great year for Division Three and what I've liked in particular is that teams have come through. It takes time, perseverance and stamina to build a good footballing side. Sandwell are clearly better than when they started and Rockmount have finally fulfilled their potential. Brierley Hill are back, Living Hope are on the up and you can clearly see that should Common Ground stick to the task, they'll be up there. Then there's Rivival Fires and Darkhouse, two sides who must be looking forward to 2011/12. Credit to both sides today. A highly competitive game today, played in good spirits when the whole season was at stake. One last mention is for Charles 'Squaddie' Campbell. Squaddie first played in WMCFL for Clarendon and picked up Division Two, League Cup and several Division One medals over the years. Today he won Division Three in the heart of the Rockmount midfield. To my knowledge, he's the only player in the history of the league to possess winners medals from all three divisions and the Cup. It couldn't happen to a nicer fellow, he goes down in WMCFL history. Clarendon's Louis Williams adds: We would like to give our congratulations to Junction Ten and Rockmount for winning Divisons Two and Three. Special mention to Squaddie a true warrior, he spent many years in the heart of our midfield, still got a good engine and always a winner well done “Squaddie”. Jason Jackson also says: At the start of the season I don't think the squad of Sandwell's players would of thought we would of been anywhere near the promotion mix up. But after six wins on the bounce we were full of confidence and ready for anyone no matter who they were. We arrived early and got out on to the pitch for a warm up. The skipper got us organised and we were brimming with confidence from kick off. First chance fell to us from a corner from Stu Winters which fell to Mark Allsop who could not keep his header down. Rockmount tried to put the ball in the air which the back four dealt with. Anything we did not win in the air, we stepped up and caught them offside. The back four has been brilliant all season and today showed why our goals for outweigh our goals against. The ball was pumped into Sandwell's box and we stepped out superbly but Squaddie and our keeper Kev collided and Squaddie came off worse which resulted in a big delay. Both managers patched up their players and they continued. Half time came and went and again we had our chances but we could not put them away. To Luke's credit he played the role of lone striker very well. It was a long punt down field flicked on by their number 10 and Parnell was pushed wide but somehow managed to squeeze in the shot:1-0 to Rockmount. Sandwell have not given up in any game this season and pushed forward as Stu and Matt, Mark A and Spencer kept pushing on. As time went on Broomy, who I think had a great game, had to come off and was replaced by Azza with Stu moving back to the back four. Rockmount kept trying to pull us apart and we kept shape. As we pushed for a equaliser Kev made two outstanding saves and I cleared three off the line and Stu Winters made a great goal line clearence to keep it 1-0. We missed Dibble today but we are not beaten yet. A big two games to go starting next week vs the impressive Darkhouse. Just wanna say well done to Rockmount on the title and to Squaddie who deserved his league winner's medal today. It is a honour to be playing in a team such as Sandwell where there is so much talent and Rockmount certainly know they were in a game today. The match was superbly officiated as well, well done to all. Sandwell two wins and we get what no one thought was possible at start of season not even Ed. Charles
Campbell adds:
I'd like to say a big thank you to those who have congratulated Rockmount
United on our promotion. A great season for Rockmount. It was nice seeing
a full squad out today, something we haven't seen in two months due to
injuries to key players (including our top goal scorer). We knew we had
to win to clinch the title and it was a job well done. Common Ground United 4 Darkhouse 0 Common Ground complete their fixtures today with an excellent win over Darkhouse. Usually the Darkhouse defence is stubborn and mean but yesterday they succombed to their second defeat on the trot and another four goals. The result means that CGU rise up to third and are guaranteed a top five finish; they just now wait for the Sandwell and LHC results to come in and then the AGM to see if they make it to Division Two next season. Living Hope Church 4 Beacon Church 1 Steve
Farley says: With only a mathematical chance of finishing in
the runners up spot it was time to experiment with a few positional changes
with a view to next season. I must say I was pleased with the outcome.
Josh playing up front for only the second time now has two goals in two
games as a striker. Carl came out of goal to claim man of the match in
central midfield and Bob and Jemarl proved that they too are serious central
midfielders. Seb played a blinder in goal and the partnership of Grovesy
and Lukas (and later on Jase) supporting each other at right back and
right wing proved priceless, Brainy (who grabbed a brace) and Lee both
got plenty of room to express themselves and both had great games whilst
Robbie, Matt and Andy reduced Beacon to relying almost purely on set pieces
as their only way of threatening us (I must say that Beacon were brilliant
at corners). Revival Fires 9 All Nations 0 Revival Fires won't want this season to end: Another great result for them; if the league had started seven matches ago, they'd be out in front. Sometimes clubs take a little while to settle down and the Fires are the perfect example. They had a real sticky patch in and around February when they lost four, conceding 24 goals. They turned it around and have let in just ten in seven, scoring 31. I over estimated what they were capable of this season but I could see the spark pre-season and they have delivered. Steve
Rose says:
An emphatic win today ensured we continued our fine end of season form
stretching to seven winning games.
DIVISION TWO Rowley College 3 Junction Ten Village 2 Pete Bennett says: What a game it was today! Playing against the worthy champions we recovered from 0-2 to snatch an unlikely win with a minute or so to play. Junction 10 are a fabulous football team and seemed intent on extending their already unassailable lead at the top. You can only have respect to Martin and his lads because not only can they all play but also they want to play the right way: their workrate, on and off the ball supplements their talent and ability. Their one weakness is hardly one to be ashamed of: they are so committed to playing football that they always give the opposition a chance to play (believing, with some justification, that they can beat anybody in a game of football). We felt today if we could stay in the game we might just get something and so it proved. At 2-0 they might have tried to close it out, but it’s not in their nature! We needed to avoid defeat today to maintain an unlikely late run out of trouble and into contention but were given plenty of reasons in the first half to see how hard this was going to be. This was a good open game and with Leon back leading the line we certainly had a threat but we were also, on a hot day, very much focussed on the threat J10 were offering. Defensively they were very solid and have the ability to launch it forward and find three or four willing runners. After an enterprising opening period J10 opened the scoring with such a break. Pete Falconer had three running alongside him when he expertly slotted home. The rest of the half saw great endeavour from us, a couple of decent saves from their excellent keeper and at least two real chances that went begging. However we went in glad to be level and knowing a great effort would be needed. We’d had to make an early change and Nathan Hylton was one of three subs who had a great impact on the game. However the next goal was likely to be vital and Martin got it, stretching our defence and rifling home. It was hard to see us coming back though we were still offering plenty to the game. We were let back in by quite a soft penalty. The referee, the excellent Herbert Rose, blew up for a push on Leon which happened to be just inside the box. Leon powered in the penalty. Both sides made changes. For us Rowey was immediately involved at full back but it was Sammy Nelson up front who effectively turned the game in our favour. From the moment Sammy came on pretty much everything he did came off, starting with a mazey run into the heart of their defence. Suddenly we had momentum. But we still needed to beat their keeper. Finally within the last five minutes Matt Stanton headed us level. I called for restraint: a point was, to be frank, what our effort and attitude had deserved but J10 were very capable of breaking our hearts! Nevertheless in our final attack Sammy turned it on for Mark Southall, who else, to turn in an unlikely winner. Congratulations to J10, worthy champions. For us it’s a crack at Lighthouse next week. Renewal Solihull 0 MBD United 0 A rare 0-0 result sees Solihull complete their season. They now will have to wait on Dynamo to see if they finish tenth or eleventh. For MBD, I think they are almost certainly out of the top three unless they win all their remaining games and make up a huge goal-difference. Dynamo Kingswinford 2 Chawn Hill Church 7 A big win for Chawn sees them move away from the bottom of the table and into the safe centre ground. Nice to see Dale Bedford get himself a hat-trick, one of the Chawn 'old boys'. But the Dynamo slump continues with another defeat; that's six in a row. Their last match is away at Rowley who are presently on a charge. Ironically, Dynamo beat Rowley back in September.
DIVISION ONE Clarendon 2 Champions Church 1 Shawn
Devonport says: Like last week it's difficult at this time of
the season with nothing to play for to play a team going for the title,
however today we realised we needed to play for pride unlike last week
when we just folded without any fight or quality. Wolves and Perton 3 Zion Athletic 2 A good win for Wolves that will probably see them saved from the drop. Twenty points is not bad and the goal difference has been respectable. The goal difference column is an interesting one to peruse in Division One; it seems to split the league into three: We have a top four, all well into double figures (and have all almost identical goals for). Next are the mid-tablers in single digit positive and then the bottom five, double digit negative. I thought Wolves were dead-cert for the drop but have shown their mettle this season. Tom Baugh adds: We suspected Zion might have one eye on the cup final in this one and that proved to be the case, with some familiar faces from the opposition starting on the bench, namely Jimmy Cutler, whose been a constant thorn in our side in recent years. Still, they're a strong side and we had to be at our best to get the job done. We were given another early bonus when their defender dropped a backpass short and Luke sprinted in to coolly slot home the opener. The lead didn't last long though and a speculative long ball forward bounced down off the crossbar and the linesman immediately flagged to say the ball had crossed the line. One all. Fortunately for us, we managed to get our noses ahead once more just prior to the interval, when Paggie rose superbly to power in a header from Dan's corner. Zion had big problems marking from set pieces and we duly punished them again early in the second half, when Jason latched onto a clever flick on from Luke to head home our third. Breathing space. The game was back in the balance moments later though, when a good passing move ended with Rich spilling a shot and Jimmy Cutler, who came on at the interval, firing in the rebound via the underside of the bar. The visitors pressed for an equaliser but despite seeing plenty of the ball and asking a lot of questions in and around our box, never really troubled Rich. We were glad to hear the final whistle, as everyone had put in a real shift to see out what could be the win that secures our Division 1 status. Good to luck to Zion in the cup final. I have no doubt they'll give Clarendon a real run for their money. St Matthew's 2 Halesowen Zion 4 A win for Halesowen that sees them comfortably saved from the bottom three. It's been a disappointing year for Halesowen; they ended last season in third, above City Church no less but this year has been no-where near as good. St Matthew's now know that they will end the season in the bottom three. Amblecote 4 EK Corinthia 0 Amblecote have a better day this week and give the league table a degree of respectability; they've now hit the 30 point mark and are not too far off Zion and King's. EK have left it a little late if they are to escape the drop but you never know with them. They are capable of competing with the best teams in the league. Simon
Ashby says: A resounding win for us yesterday and a score settled
as EK scored twice in the 92 minute in the reverse fixture to deny us
a win in our second game of the season. |

Saturday Preview DIVISION THREE The Division Three title could be sewn up this week-end with a super-key match between Rockmount and Sandwell. Rockmount's title push looked a dead-cert until they hit the skids in a little dip a few weeks ago. They got things back on the rails with a couple of smart wins, not least the 4-1 result over Darkhouse. Sandwell have left their title challenge very late but six wins on the trot, conceding just three goals in the process must give them confidence going into the game. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw and I just can't pick a winner in this one either. Elsewhere, Living Hope need a win in their match with Beacon to keep their promotion hope alive. Officially this league is a three up, three down promotion and relegation system but with clubs coming and going, there's usually a bit of other movement too, so finishing as high up as possible is paramount if clubs want to progress. There's not a lot for Beacon to play for now: they've pretty much avoided the wooden spoon, so they can go out there and enjoy the match. Common Ground's season has ebbed and flowed this year but they could rise as high as third should results go their way tomorrow. But Darkhouse have proven stubborn opposition and have their own agenda to pursue. They can end on 35 points should they win their last three. It's going to be an interesting game as I consider CGU to be a brilliant attacking side and Darkhouse have conceded just 19 goals in 17 games, a brilliant defensive show. Just like Sandwell, Revival's season clicked six matches ago. They've gone on a superb run, winning all of their last six and can end on 34 points should they win their last two. But All Nations will have something to say about that. It's been a disappointing season in front of goal for the Wolverhampton side, they've just managed 16 but the defensive record is not much different from Revival's. It should be a good game. DIVISION ONE No game for leaders this Saturday but they will be eager to hear the score from the Clarendon vs Champions Church match. Clarendon are up for the double but need three points from this match to close the gap in one of their games in hand. Whilst Champions have little to play for in terms of league position, Clarendon have knocked them out of the Cup in each of their three seasons, so charity is not going to be top of their agenda. In addition, the reverse fixture ended 2-2 and the Cup match was 0-0 after 90 minutes, so Champions Church is no easy game for Clarendon. Could be a good game, it depends which Champions team shows up. Elsewhere, the story is pretty much one of relegation battles, with Wolves at home to Cup finalist Zion Athletic. They may have caught them on the right Saturday with the Cup Final next Tuesday. Halesowen could do with a point or two from their last two games to ensure they avoid the bottom three. First up St Matthew's who could do with winning all three of their last games. And then EK travel to Amblecote who have split footballing personality personality: one week they are beating the league leaders, next they are playing awful football. EK will hope for the latter. DIVISION TWO Just three matches in Division Two: After looking like they were in for a relegation battle, Rowley now are making a dash for promotion and take on Champions Junction Ten this week-end. Maybe Junction Ten's ambition will have faded a little but sometimes that can make a team play even better football as they relax. No doubt that Rowley need all three points if they harbour ambitions of a return to the top flight. MBD's dream of Division One football has faded somewhat over the last few weeks but they can still make it. Tomorrow they play Renewal who themselves could do with a win. Dynamo and Chawn, two sides who have tasted what it's like to be at the top of the league have seen better days. They're both skulking around in the nether regions of Division Two at the moment. A win for Chawn would banish any notion of relegation, whereas Dynamo will be looking straight down the barrel should they lose. |

Saturday Review DIVISION ONE St Mary's 1 Clarendon 0 A massive win for St Mary's to draw the neutral's attention to the Division One run-in. A single goal from Shaun Green was enough to secure all three points for his side and 'do the double' in the league over St Mary's closest rivals, Clarendon in a real title deciding game. Should both sides win all their remaining matches, then it'll go down to goal difference; Clarendon have the upper hand presently in that regard. Both teams have tough games up and coming and Clarendon have the Cup Final to think about too on 26th. These sides have finished first and second for the last four years now, including this year. The last two seasons, the title has been won by a single point. It may be even closer this year. Dave Bignell says: When I said at half time there would only be one goal in it, I was right! It's games like this that hopefully win you leagues, and having taken six points from Clarendon in the league this season, we're a little disappointed that the title is still in their hands. The game started quickly with Clarendon ejoying the best clear cut chances only for our keeper to make two or three stunning stops. We looked dangerous from set plays and Tink forced Obi in to a wonder save from 35 yards. Half time came and went and again Clarendon squandered a couple of gilt edged opportunities, thanks to keeper Phil again!), and then came the turning point: A long ball turned their defence and Obi came out and handled outside the area (photographic evidence is conclusive). Straight red, which may have been a little harsh, and from the resulting freekick Shaun scored. Clarendon carried on pressing even with ten men, and I think we were lucky not to concede a penalty, but could then have put it to bed in the final few minutes when Alex couldn't quite stretch far enough. A great win and it sets up the final three games perfectly. Special mention has to go to the unsung heroes of the team - Phil in goal was sensational and well worthy of the praise and any 'man of the match' accolades. Also the players who were unlucky not to feature this week but have been so pivotal for the rest of the season. Three games left, two where we've dropped points on previous encounters, and nine points to play for. Hopefully we can make Clarendon work all the way till the end of the season and earn the title. Should be a cracking final few weeks. City Church 6 Champions Church 1 Both these sides were contenders for the title at various stages during the season but both have dropped out of the race and yesterday was effectively a third place play-off. However, neither sides are slouches when they put their mind to it and could still play their part in the run-in as they still have fixtures against the top two. Perhaps City still hold a glimmer of hope that they could do it and it's still mathematically possible but in my mind, the title is off to one of the top two this year. Mrtin Ogbourn says: It's a strange topsy-turvy league this season. Considering the results last Saturday (Champions winning 7-1 and City losing 0-4) no one would have predicted such a comprehensive victory for City as we bounced back in style after last week's shocker. Although we have been inconsistent recently we have now scored 18 goals in 4 games (and 12 in 2 games) either side of the cup semi final. The game was competitive throughout, but City were focussed and ruthless today in an all round impressive display. City started well and passed the ball around with purpose and the lead was justified when Louden powered his way through for City early on. Despite our possession though, confidence was understandably fragile and we failed to clear a ball from a corner to allow Devonport to fire home from close range. After this City had a sticky spell as Champions had the better of the play. Chattaway made a couple of crucial saves to keep the scores level. City responded well and were attacking with width. Goals followed from a Louden penalty (after another handball on the line), a Quaintance far post finish and a Forrest volley. The half time scoreline of 4-1 was comfortable yet Champions remained dangerous with deep runs from quick midfield players and City were not taking anything for granted. The highlight of the second half was a goal of the season candidate from Forrest who did a slalom run through half of the Champions team (I counted at least 5 defenders he went past!). He finished well from the edge of the box after responding in the right way after an elbow to the head left him dazed. Yeo finished the scoring late on with a deft touch after a good run as the game ended 6-1. The performance and attitude was just the reaction City needed this week. We could have disintegrated and gone on holiday, but we are made of sterner stuff. It was some of the best passing from us this season and the Champions defence couldn't live with the pace and movement of Quaintance and Forrest. It's difficult to pick a man of the match as everyone was excellent today, but Atkins and Louden had their best games of the season and Thomas put in another fine performance. Special mention to Garwood who covered well in an unfamiliar position again. Shawn Devonport adds: What a difference a week makes, after battering Amblecote last week we took a pounding against a more determined City outfit. Is there five goals between us and City? No way but today we could have no complaints after being resouningly beaten. We made our traditional slow start when we failed to clear a free kick on about three occasions and Louden made no mistake. City continued to press and there could have been no complaints had they gone 2-0 up but we equalised when a Chris Gee ball made its way to myself and I made no mistake. We nearly went 2-1 up when a poor defensive header nearly beat Chattaway but the City player was saved by his own crossbar. We were enjoying our best spell but again we shot ourselves in the foot when we failed to pick up and Quaintance made it 2-1. It was soon 3-1 from the spot, no complaints as the ball was handled on the line. I think it should have been red as well. Louden made no mistake and it was 3-1. Then the turning points: We thought we made it 3-2 when Rion slotted home but the flag went up, the assistant flagged a player who we felt wasn't interfering offside but the goal was chalked off. City went up the other end an when it seemed like the City player was clearly offside the assistant deemed it came off our player which we felt was very harsh and it was 4-1. We never gave up, Chattaway made two impressive stops from myself, Nicholls dragged wide and we battled hard but we didn't defend anywhere as well as we have usually this season. Second half and it all got a bit tedious at times, in truth a City player could have walked for a kick off the ball and a Champions player for an elbow but the referee only deemed both yellows. We had a golden oppurtunity to make it 4-2 but Rion headed straight at Chattaway from six yards and Doupe headed agonisingly wide. City had plenty of chances themselves though and made it 5-1 with a fantastic solo goal from Forrest who is the best player I've seen this season. He beat up to five Champions players, some far too easily for my liking but nothing can be taken away from him for a great solo goal. We were then reduced to ten men and City went on to dominate the last 20 and got another to make it 6-1. I don't think there was five goals between us today but City were deserving winners, they have so many attacking options and they caused us no end of problems. They have a great keeper and I enjoyed a good battle with Shep today who is definatly one of the better defenders in the league! For us we were very poor at times today not winning enough challenges or headers and defending no where near as well as we usually do, but tha'ts credit to the high standards we have set this season. It gets no easier next week as we travel to Clarendon as we look to finish the last three games on a high note. Amblecote 4 Zion Athletic 3 Amblecote win the battle of mid table by the odd goal in seven and complete the double over Zion Athletic. I'm sure that Zion had one eye on the Cup Final and won't be overly upset by the result, whilst a couple of their key players this season warmed their scoring boots. It's been an odd season for Amblecote, beating City and St Mary's and then losing to Wolves and EK. But I guess that's just the way it goes right across the whole football spectrum. Simon
Ashby says:
Back to winning ways for us against a much improved Zion team from previous
years, who may be looking to push up the league next season. They have
been very unfortunate this year as they have played us twice with our
full strengh squad and as other teams have found this season we are a
match for anyone when we have a full team available. Our best starting
XI can change and I don't think is set in stone, but if we have 13 or
14 of our best players available including our more creative players we
tend to do well and so it proved on Saturday. Halesowen Zion 2 Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 3 A good win for Wolves that could ultimately keep them in Division One next season but with EK winning too, it's far from certain. Halesowen aren't completely out of the woods but I've got a feeling that 20 points will be sufficient this year. Selly Oak Methodist 1 EK Corinthia 2 Selly Oak sign off with another defeat and the Division One wooden spoon, as EK grasp at survival with three points. From what little I've heard, it sounds like it was an exciting game. Selly Oak will be slightly relieved that they kept their goals conceded down to two digits. The record, at least in recent times is 116 let in by Brierley Hill in 99/2000. For EK, it's game on with five matches remaining. Their destiny is in their own hands.
DIVISION TWO Sheldon 1 Rowley College 1 The question of which division Rowley College would be playing in next season has elicited several different answers over the past few months and the result from yesterday may well form part of the answer. Lighthouse Lions will have been pleased with the result to add to their three points but the formation of the top three, whilst closer remains unresolved. Pete Bennett says: We have to see this as a good result today particularly as we were without Leon Mitchell, whose goals and all-round play has been so important to us recently (trip to Legoland for his son’s birthday) and Stew and Nathan, whose power and poise did do much to unsettle Sporting last time out. Thus we were a little short of flair, though not heart and effort against a Sheldon team deservedly heading back to Division One. This was not unlike those games you more often get in the First Division: hard, uncompromising and tight affairs usually decided by a single goal. We started well with captain Christie setting the standards for workrate, Mark Southall soon making his presence felt in midfield and Moses leading an effective back line. Then as the half wore on Sheldon took advantage of the slight slope and got into some decent positions without ever quite threatening our goal: likewise we had little goal threat. The closest either side came first half was their dipping drive that Lee acrobatically tipped over. Second half was pretty much the same in reverse. We had a busy spell in which Nathan Wilkins had a shot blocked and Christie hit the bar. Then slack marking at a free kick left George Stokes four yards out with only the keeper to beat: 1-0 and the game looked lost. However we did not despair and driven by Southall and young Ben Fowler we started to impose ourselves. This season (check our record) has been about not getting points out of games we’ve been ‘good enough’ in, usually chasing three points before we’ve secured one! Today we rallied and claimed a point. Nathan went down in the box after a tackle from behind, just as Sammy had done earlier in the half. They were both 50:50 and I think the ref got one out of them. The ref was excellent: very clear in his decisions. Christie despatched the penalty with two minutes to go! A draw was the right result and maintains the possibility that we could still finish in both the bottom three and top three! Lyndon Fisher adds: We were without our goalkeeper today but as Pete said this was a hard fought game where chances were few and far between. They hit the bar and we had a shot spectacularly tipped over. We went ahead from a free-kick headed in by George Stokes and we though that might be enough but with minutes left we gave away a sloppy penalty which was nicely converted. Two points dropped for us but a fair result for both clubs. Lighthouse Lions 3 MBD United 1 A very good win for Lighthouse Lions leaves them looking ever more likely to progress up a division. There's a fair gap between them and Sporting in fourth but I'm sure this Division is far from over, despite the season almost being over. The result leaves MBD needing to win most if not all of their games between now and the end of the season if they are to stand any chance of making it into the top three. Sporting Zion 5 Dynamo Kingswinford 3 This was also a good win for Sporting but I think it's going to be too much to ask to see them get into the top four now. Despite being able to catch Lighthouse on paper, the reality is that Lighthouse would need to lose their last game and Sporting win their last two and make up a twenty-eight goal difference deficit. Dynamo's fate looks ever bleaker, with several key teams above them picking up points yesterday. I think ninth is the best they can expect now. Renewal Solihull 2 Chawn Hill Church 3 As promised, this match lived up to its billing as a tight match between two equally matched teams. Chawn nicked the result by the odd goal and secured a result that may well see them safe from the bottom three. Renewal are in trouble though. They need to beat MBD in their last game and hope that Chawn lose all three of their matches.
DIVISION THREE Beacon Church 2 Brierley Hill AOG 4 Jon Bennett says: Final game of the season for the Hill and we knew that we had to register a win in order to cement our promotion chances. We turned up knowing that despite Beacon's position in the league it would not be an easy game and it ultimatly proved this way. We began like a rocket, a super quick fire hat-trick for our leading scorer Mike Tyler gave us a three goal lead and meant that Mike deservedly reached the thirty goal milestone for the season. Two fantastic goals folloing great work from Josh and Sam were followed by a penalty and we started thinking that things might be going our way. However, football being the sport that it is, threw a curve ball as our 'keeper slipped and dropped the ball at the Beacon striker's feet when trying to throw the ball out. This was quickly followed by another Beacon goal after we failed to clear the ball quickly and suddenly the game had a very different complexion. Beacon were pushing and looking for an equaliser but our defence held strong to take us into half time with a one goal lead. The second half saw us take a stronger grip on the game and Smudge picked a few excellent through balls to create chances. We finally scored a crucial goal following a quick throw and an excellent finish from the on-rushing Christian. We held firm to take all three points, a good game of football and in truth on the day there was not too much between the two teams, we now have a waiting game to see what position we finally end in and if Mike can hang onto the leading scorer position. A fabulous season from the Hill, for so long we have been battling at the bottom of the league and to finally get some success is a good feeling. Ian Baker has put so much effort into doing the difficult job of running the whole team for many, many seasons and on behalf of all the lads we would like to say a massive thank you to him for all his efforts. Also a huge thank you to all the organisers of the league, we all love our Saturday morning games of football and we know how much effort goes into running the league. See you next season in Division Two!! Sandwell United 3 Charlemont Star 0 I think that possibly this Sandwell's third place today is their highest position in the league. They were in Division Two some years back but that's when we had two divisions. They're now looking ever more likely to progress back up the league given their current form. The title is still a possibility but they will have to win all their remaining games and hope that Living Hope takes something from their match with Rockmount. Mark
Broome reports:
As Ed predicted, Charlemont went all out in their last match of the season.
Also, we were a little bit slow to start (again) and this made for an
interesting first half. The game was fairly even but we again took control
after a great cross from Captain Stu Winters was met by the unstoppable
Dibble, who scored with a great headed finish. 1-0 half-time. Living Hope Church 1 Revival Fires 4 Another great result for Revival as they take another three points from their match with Living Hope. That's six on the trot now, championship form, I knew they had it in them, I was just a bit premature. For Living Hope, the title slipped through their fingers with their poor run of form this end of the year. They have lost four of their five last games. Steve
Rose says:
The revival of Revival Fires goes on with a well deserved victory over
our near neighbours and promotion hopefuls Living Hope. Common Ground United 4 Pye Green Towers 1 Common Ground's season has been a little like Living Hope's: At times looking like they were going to beat everyone and then losing games that you'd have thought they should have won. Yesterday was a good day in their season of ups and downs and if results go their way, they could get fourth. As ever, every place is important in the top half as there could be a bit of a shake-up come AGM time. But well done to CGU, a good win for them. Pye Green are certain to finish eighth now, which is good progress for them. They've won twice as many games as last year and let in far fewer goals. |

Saturday Preview A big Saturday for WMCFL, with almost every game being important. DIVISION ONE Easily the biggest game is WMCFL's 'el Classico', St Mary's vs Clarendon. This match has been a real ding-dong over recent years as neither side have completely dominated. Some years, Clarendon have had the upper hand and then St Mary's have won cups and titles too. Clarendon have perhaps a little better form going into the game and they are through to the Cup Final too, so the result is hard to predict. What I will say though is that should St Mary's fail to win, then I think the title's on the way back to Clarendon. Elsewhere in the division, City vs Champions is probably the third place playoff, with both sides inconsistent. City have failed to win four of their last six league games, whilst Champions' form looks slightly better. Both sides are blessed with an abundance of quality through their teams and may boast the best two keepers in the league these days. So a draw perhaps? Amblecote vs Zion Athletic is very much a mid-table affair but Zion are definately bottom of the top and Amblecote top of the bottom, with eight points currently separating the sides. Zion may be saving themselves for the final and Amblecote's zip has long-since departed them with their ambition. A dead rubber if ever I saw one. Halesowen and Wolves fight it out down at Lea Castle with perhaps Wolves needing a win more than Halesowen. Halesowen could do with a point or two but the urgency is all but gone. I think Wolves will win if Rich can get his best side out. Likewise, EK badly need a win at Selly Oak but with the pressure completely off Selly Oak, they may relax and enjoy the run out. Selly Oak will finish off their fixtures this Saturday and definately collect Division One's wooden spoon but EK could save themselves from the drop with a few wins. DIVISION TWO We should have a corker of a match as Rowley visit Sheldon. With both sides in good form, it's really hard to pick a winner: Sheldon close in on a runner's up spot and three points from Saturday's game would almost be enough if results go their way. But Rowley have been on the prowl and could make a late dash for a pop at promotion if they go on a run. Lighthouse vs MBD is another six-pointer with both sides thinking they can secure a Division One spot. And three points at the week-end off your close rivals is way to go. Lighthouse were beaten last week-end by the dominant Junction Ten but only just and it ended a nine match unbeaten run. MBD's form was looking poor until they won their last two; prior to that they hadn't won in five. Maybe a home win in that one but it depends which MBD turn up. Dynamo desperately need to beat Sporting Zion to effect and escape from Division Two's relegation zone. Sporting's form has been topsy-turvy this season, so anything can happen. The Renewal vs Chawn match is another cruncher, with both sides in trouble. Both teams have had mixed form, sometimes beating the better sides and then capitulating to forgetable defeats. It should be a good game of football between two well matched sides. DIVISION THREE Division Three is simmering away nicely at the moment. With Rockmount having no game this week-end, they've organised a match against New Life Church in London. New Life play in the South London Christian League, so it will be nice to guage one of our teams against their's. Brierley Hill can retake the lead of the division should they beat Beacon. They should win this match but Beacon are looking much stronger after a season at it. Brierley Hill can stake a weak claim for the title with three points; I don't think that 43 points with 20 odd + goal-difference will be enough but we will see. Living Hope vs Revival Fires is the Coseley Leisure Centre derby. With Revival's pressure totally off, their five game winning streak and Living Hope's stuttering form, we may see a Revival win. What's sure is that LHC need the three points here but it'll make little difference to Revival's final outcome. A win for LHC will dial them back into the title race. I'm sure it'll be a lively match. And lastly, Sandwell's charge to the top of Division Three goes on with a home match against Charlemont. On paper, this should be a cinch for Sandwell and perhaps their biggest threat is complacency and their typical slow start. After three good performances, losing by the odd goal, including a narrow defeat to Rockmount, that has been followed by three bigger defeats. But Charlemont also complete their schedule this week-end and would love to do that with three points and Sandwell are perhaps the division's biggest scalp as we speak along with Rockmount. Good luck everybody. Enjoy your football, shake everybody's hand at the end of the match and don't shout at the ref, they are doing their best. |

Saturday Review As we enter the business end of the season, the roll of honour begins to take shape. We've now narrowed the Cup down to two teams, Clarendon and Zion Athletic, well done to both of them. It's familiar territory for Clarendon but mostly new for Zion. We also have a definate winner of Division Two as well, Junction Ten Village who have now won back to back Division Three and Two titles, securing the Championship with a win over Lighthouse Lions. Congratulations to Junction Ten. Looking through the fixtures for the coming weeks, it's begining to get exciting with many matches being deciders, not least next week with St Mary's playing Clarendon, Lighthouse battling it out with MBD for a place in Division One and some key games in Division Three too. We could do with some rain and we may get some when it cools mid-week. League Cup Semi Finals City Church 0 Clarendon 4 Martin Ogbourn reports: Firstly, we give thanks to God for the beautiful weather and the chance to play football. We give him the glory win, lose or draw. Today finally saw City relinquish the Cup with a whimper as City lost for the first time in the Cup since March 2009. Clarendon deservedly won this semi-final and after also beating St Mary's and Champions during their campaign, deserve to make it through to the final. The game was very disappointing for City as it was another poor all round performance (in an inconsistent second half to the season) and like the recent league fixture, Clarendon did not even have to get out of first gear to win the game comfortably. The goals were all well taken by their dangerous forwards, but we gifted them at least three goals. Mistakes happen and if there weren't any mistakes there would never be a goal in football, but we didn't give ourselves a chance as we conceded early (no blame attached to Chattaway who has kept us in many games) and found ourselves 3-0 down again by half time. The second half was always going to be an uphill struggle and chances were at a premium. City had some long range efforts, half chances and headed attempts, but we didn't test the keeper enough. Late on Clarendon completed the scoring when a City free-kick by the City corner flag somehow landed at a Clarendon forward's feet in the penalty area and he slotted into an empty net! This piece of slapstick comedy rather summed up the day for City! The 4-0 scoreline was harsh although the result was never in doubt. City need to show character again in the finale to the season as we aim for an improvement on a fourth place league finish last season. Collectively we weren't good enough today. Quaintance and Thomas worked tirelessly in unfamiliar positions and Snelgrove looked sharp when he came on. All the best to Clarendon for the final who were as quick and clinical as ever, although we still have one more stab at them in the league! Tommy Woodward adds: Our third final in four years thanks to a Jason Greene double and goals from Pablo and Moses. Usually our 'big' players get all the praise with the likes of Roger, Matt, Luke, Jason, Pablo and Obi getting mentions, but this season our 'unsung heroes' have kept our season on track. Ashley Innis, Mark Lee, Mark Sirrell, Craig, Daily, Bigger, Leon, Aaron, Steve Greene and ex Wimbledon boy Laurie, have all dug deep and put us in the league cup final and second in the league. Clarendon have a fantastic squad of players and on top of that Louis and Selvyn. With a bit of luck we are on for the league's first treble. Bring on Zion! Zion Athletic 2 MBD United 1 Well done to Zion, who secured a narrow victory against MBD United to see them through to their first Cup Final. Athletic have improved considerably year on year and have always been a decent side but this year they've moved up a gear. I'm pleased to see a new side in the final again, it's nice to see the experience of the day shared by new people. Having said that, there are a number of players who played for Halesowen Zion in the 2006 final. For MBD, they will obviously be disappointed but they should be proud of what they've achieved. They also have a decent shot at a promotion place with five matches left. And with enquiries from five potential sides so far, there's a possibility that the ranks could grow unless we see teams drop out, so all to play for. DIVISION ONE Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 0 St Mary's 3 St Mary's retake the lead of Division One again with a 3-0 win over a depleted Wolves side. Rich Webster says: Wolves at home with an early kick off always causes us problems with the team and so it proved again today, that it always seems to happen against St Mary's makes it all the more infuriating! We started the game well, with a number of corners but could not take advantage. A defensive mix up left the St Mary’s forward with a shot and despite an initial save, the rebound fell for a comfortable follow up finish. St Mary's then upped their game having one effort disallowed and scored their second during this period: A stunning shot on the run from outside the box that dipped and swerved viciously, a truly spectacular goal – just a shame we were on the end of it! We came out positively in the second half and put the St Mary's goal under more pressure with a couple of goal line clearances, a couple of superb saves and a shot from Luke that shook the cross bar from a tight angle. In our vain attempt to get something out of the game we left ourselves wide open and St Mary's had a few breakaways, culminating in the final goal just before full time. While the result wasn’t what we wanted, we put in a good show and hopefully we will be able to repeat this performance in our final three games. Amblecote 1 Champions Church 7 Shawn
Devonport says: A glorious sunny day today but it's holiday
season also so both teams were missing numerous players! Simon
Ashby adds:
Well done to Champions yesterday, they put us to the sword with a comprehensive
7-1 defeat, although I think things could have turned out differently
had we made the most of our dominance in the first 25 minutes. It's
an odd statement to make given we lost so heavily, but we could well
have got something out of this game had we not failed to convert early
chances and then succumbed so easily to the pressure of the Champions
attack as the game wore on. DIVISION TWO Junction Ten Village 3 Lighthouse Lions 2 Junction Ten seal back to back titles with a narrow win over fellow promotion hopefuls Lighthouse Lions. Winning the Championship with three games to spare is some effort in an eleven team league, so congratulations to them. They look forward to competing with the big boys next year. Ray
Rose says:
Firstly congratulations to Junction 10 for winning the division title.
They are the best team we have played all season and good luck to them
next year. Martin has a great squad of lads and it was a great day for
football. Next week MBD at home and a crucual game for both teams. We have grown this season and have improved as a team and as individuals, lads very proud of what you have acheived as a team and for your character. St Thomas Aldridge 0 Sheldon 11 Sheldon take full advantage of Lighthouse losing at Junction Ten and St Thomas' demise to stick themselves in pole for the runner's up gongs. Lyndon Fisher says: It was good to have our missing players back after last week's defeat and we knew we had to put in a good performance this morning and we didn't disappoint. We were totally in control and scored at will. It was a great team effort with goals from Shakey, the two Horobins, Deano and a fabulous double hat-trick from our top scorer George Stokes. Just the tonic we needed, St Thomas were very gracious in defeat we wish them well. Well done today lads. Dynamo Kingswinford 1 Bournbrook Athletic 3 This was pretty much a six-pointer, with Bournbrook putting in another good performance to achieve an excellent result that probably secures their second division status for next season. That's three games unbeaten for the South Birmingham club but four defeats on the trot for Dynamo, who are perilously close to the drop. DIVISION THREE Some very interesting results in this division as we near its close, with Sandwell suddenly entering the fray, testing those clubs above them. Rockmount United 4 Darkhouse 1 Another assured looking result for Rockmount, inflicting Darkhouse's worst defeat all year, as they return to the top of the table. Goals from Velroy Irish, Matthew Parnell and two from Chris South sealed the victory in a tricky tie in which they could have come unstuck in. Sandwell United 2 Living Hope Church 0 The Sandwell juggernaught rumbles on with a sixth win on the trot, eclipsing last year's mid-season run, this time against promotion rivals Living Hope. Steve Farley says: A very competitive game with Sandwell just getting the edge. A good shot from Dibble that went in off the post and two decent penalty appeals with Sandwell's being granted and ours wasn't. Such a fine line between success and failure! Sandwell defended fantastically well aided and abetted by our woeful shooting. Everything we did up to the 18 yard line was brilliant but we had no answer to Sandwell's resolute back four. Down but certainly not out, we have four games to win promotion and who knows what the top three will look like? Mark
Broome adds:
Another big game for us today and another good team performance. Both
teams played well from the off but it was us who scored first with another
fantastic finish from the 'hitman' Dibble. Matty Hammond hit an Xavi
type pass to Dibble who hit a shot from the edge of the box and it went
in off both posts. We then scored our second just before half-time.
Dibble again getting onto a great kick from Kev and winning us a penalty.
He scored with a neat finish to make it 2-0 at the break. Beacon Church 1 Revival Fires 2 Another match, another win for Revival. I can't say that I'm surprised but perhaps that it took Revival so long to crunch into gear. Whilst four of the five wins were by just one goal, sometimes that's just the way it is in football: A fine line between success and failure. Beacon perhaps sit on the other side of the success-ometer, once again losing by the odd goal. Perhaps they should take heart from Saturday's opponents; keep plugging away with grit and determination and the results will follow. Steve Rose reports: Beacon F.C 1 Revival Fires F.C. 2.....and yet another win heralded from being behind and yet another late, late winner by Ant Parke!! Good battling performance today saw us defeat and complete the double over a more than useful Beacon side. A scrappy first 30 minutes saw us fall behind to a goal from Beacon when we thought we should have had a free kick ourselves, but from there on inwards, and especially in the second half, Beacon were restricted to long punted balls to their front two, meaning the excellent (and Man of The Match) Stef Broome had a chance to show us all what a quality player he is and what a great pair he and Stu Smith make. The addition of Adam Brophy in the second half turned the game in our favour when he hit the pass of the match with the outside of his left foot to Ash Rollason for the equaliser before an equally superb through ball sent Ant away to score a late and deserved winner. I want to say a big well done to all our boys who have showed a great level of maturity both on and off the pitch, in controlling their language and discipline. It really really is a joy to be involved with each and everyone one of you. Even my 8 year old daughter enjoyed the game!!! |

Saturday Preview League Cup Semi Finals A superb couple of games await us this week-end. Last year's semi is re-run this season again as Clarendon and City Church clash back at the same ground: Coneygree. It was a really tight and tense game twelve months ago which City won on penalties, going through to beat DC Dynamos 6-0 in the final. It all looks very similar again: Clarendon have the upper hand in the league and are expected to win but City won't let go of that trophy without a fight. Clarendon's route to the semi was initally blocked by their greatest rivals, St Mary's. But they overcame that hurdle with a 3-1 win. Next up was a tough match away at Champions Church. They won 1-0 in the dying seconds of extra-time. Then Rowley in the quarters, winning through on penalties after drawing the match 1-1. City's path looks more straight-forward, until now. Sandwell gave them a game in round two after they received a bye. They won that one 4-2. They beat EK 5-0 in round three and then saw off Division Two's Sheldon 4-0, who were riding high in their league. In the other semi, Division Two's MBD United play Zion Athletic. It's no surprise that either side are here; they've both had good seasons. MBD played Sporting Zion in the first round, and beat them 4-0. Sporting are a good team on their day and are one place above MBD in the league. They then met St Thomas in round two, winning that match 3-1. Darkhouse were dispatched 2-0 in the third, a typically low-scoring game and then a 7-0 win over Living Hope in the last eight. Zion got a bye through to the second round where they met their neighbours Halesowen and knocked the stuffing out of them 8-1 in what we would have expected to be a tough game. They made light of it and were seven up by half time. A narrow 3-2 victory saw to runaway division three leaders Rockmount, then a tough quarter away at Chawn, a match they won 3-1. You really have to fancy a Clarendon vs Zion Athletic final, on paper they are the best sides but so often teams up their game for a big match. Either go to pieces or deliver the goods. |

Division Three Run-in With several results favouring the neutral on-looker, the Division Three title run-in looks to be a scorcher: Brierley Hill AOG The current leaders Brierley Hill have just one game left: away at Beacon Church. With 40 points on the board, one more win could be enough should the others slip up. This may have looked like Brierley Hill just had to turn up to collect the points a few weeks ago but things have changed. Beacon are a stronger side now and it's a long way up to their ground. I'm going to say that the Hill will take the points and make the rest sweat. Ed's Prediction: 43 points Rockmount United Rockmount looked like they were going to cruise to an easy title this end of the season but a sticky patch of just two points from nine has knocked them off the top and dented their confidence. Sometimes over-confidence is a factor and maybe that's what happened but those points gained earlier in the season has meant that they are still in pole position: Win all their games and they will be champions. They have three matches left and all look tricky to say the least. I could envisage Rockmount losing the lot and blowing the whole thing. First up is Darkhouse, who beat them just ten days ago. Surely Rockmount will be doubly determined to win this match but the seed of doubt is cast. I'm saying they'll win. A fortnight later, they face Sandwell, the form team in Division Three at this moment in time. In fact, if recent form were the judge, I'd say that Sandwell are the best side in the division. Maybe they'll sneak a win here too? Then last up and possibly the title decider is Living Hope. They drew the reverse fixture and I think there will be a repeat result. Three tough games. Will Rockmount bounce back or have they lost it? I think that the fact that they play all three of their matches at home will have a bearing. Ed's Prediction: 45 points Living Hope Church Wow, haven't Living Hope come some way from last season. If it doesn't work out, no doubt they'll be disappointed but they shouldn't be. They are in a real shout of the Division Three title and like Rockmount, they can win the title just by winning their remaining fixtures. Sounds easy doesn't it? First up are Sandwell, who are in the form of their lives. The teams played each other a few weeks back and Sandwell won that one. Brierley Hill stifled them last week as well, so just one win in three for LHC. I'm going for a Sandwell win this week. Next up the week after are Revival Fires. Whilst the Fires are down in seventh, they've won their last four on the trot, including wins against Brierley Hill and CGU. LHC will have their work cut out to win that one but I think they'll come away with the points. They then play Beacon and Pye Green, both of whom have showed promise over this side of the season. I think LHC will win; they're at home for both games which plays part. Then the decider and I've already said that'll be a draw with Rockmount. Ed's Prediction: 42 points Sandwell United I didn't think I'd be including Sandwell but their recent form has dialed them into the equation. In fact, if you look back over their last ten games, they've won eight and that's as good as any other side pretty much. Should Sandwell win all five of their remaining games, they'll be in with a shout but they'll still rely on others dropping points which is an entirely feasible situation. First up are Living Hope and the result of this game will probably rule Sandwell in or out of the title race. I've already said that I fancy them to take the points. Next week it's Charlemont at home and with no disrespect intended, they should win that one. Charlemont have lost their last six and haven't scored in their last two but it is their last game and have nothing to lose. Then it's perhaps the cruncher, if they've not lost to LHC, then should they beat Rockmount away the title race will have been blown wide open. I've already said that they'll lose that one but if Rockmount have lost against Darkhouse, they'll be there for the taking. Sandwell's last two matches are Darkhouse away and Beacon at home. They should cruise the Beacon match on paper but Darkhouse may prove stubborn opposition: Another side with little to lose but pride. I've put Sandwell down for 12 points from their last five matches. They've added spice to the title run in and are possibly one of the outsiders but can still win it. Ed's Prediction: 40 points Good luck everyone. We've seen some clubs wrecked because of players' over enthusiasm at deciding games. Keep things in perspective and shake everyone's hand at the end of your games. Be respectful to your opposition. All four clubs in the race have done very well this year. It would be such a shame to ruin a great season. |

Saturday Review DIVISION ONE EK Corinthia 0 Clarendon 4 Another regulation win for Clarendon as they cruise back to the top of the Division, equal on points with St Mary's and a game in hand. Their goal-difference is significantly superior, so they are the favourites for the title at this point in time. The 'Double' is also very much on as well with Clarendon returning to the site of their semi-final defeat on penalties to the same opposition, City Church at Coneygree next Saturday. Clarendon have a canny knack of returning to the place of last year's disappontment and putting the issue to bed and after beating City 3-0 just a few weeks ago, I'd expect them to repeat the result. The double remains as elusive as it used to be in English football, with Walsall Olympic the last team to win the League Cup and Division One simultaneously back in 1994. We've had some good sides in the league since then, perhaps Clarendon could argue that they are the best since Walsall, no-one has managed to win it. Tommy Woodward adds: Congratulations to Pablo whose first goal today was his 100th in the league. Pablo's first league goal was back in September 2006 against St Mary's. Since then he has only completed two full seasons and all of his goals have been scored in the top division, so I'm sure if there was a game to goal ratio table, Pablo would be miles ahead. We look forward to his 200th!! City Church 6 Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 2 Ian MacDonald says: City got back to winning ways in the league today following a fine performance against Wolverhampton & Perton Churches at Rowheath. City started well and could have taken the lead earlier than they did if it wasn't for Webster in the Wolves goal producing fine saves to deny Campbell and Forrest. City did eventually take the lead as James Forrest steered a shot home via the post. Soon after, the lead was doubled as Chris Yeo, back in the starting XI, headed home a corner. A third goal arrived early in the second half as a long ball from Dan Atkins was knocked past the advancing keeper by an unfortunate Wolves defender. Atkins was then in the action again as he raced away to fire home a shot at the near post. Wolves rallied and won a penalty which was confidently converted before they scored a second from a corner. City substitute Dave Louden then got in on the goalscoring act by netting twice - first with a calm lob and then with a close range finish after a good turn to end the scoring. Overall it was a fine performance by City. Credit must also go to Wolves who showed good spirit to rally when four goals behind. Dan Atkins adds: City returned home to fortress Rowheath to face a Wolverhampton side (like Liverpool for West Brom) who City have never beaten (until today for both!!). With one eye on the tasty cup semi final on next Saturday, it could have been a potential banana skin. City started the brightest (again) and dominated possession and created some really good chances with Garwood and Forrest causing most of the problems. With lots of possession can come frustration but we seemed a different team today committed to getting the right result. The breakthrough finally came when Yeo wreaked havoc in the box leaving a free ball for Forrest to smash home from 10 yards (bit harsh on the keeper who prevented it from being a lot worse). Goal two came shortly after with another bullet header from a pinpoint Garwood cross; Yeo made it 2-0. Wolves rarely looked like scoring other than a couple of breakaway chances. A solid back line display. Half time brought the opportunity for a breather but thankfully, City came out at the same pace and energy levels. A crazy goal from about 40 yards out including a defensive mix up left Wolves all but out of sight. Five minutes later and it was four. A cleverly weighted pass from Hunter and I successfully slotted home from ten yards out. The game was all but over in our eyes and two changes in defence possibly sent signals out too obviously to Wolves and they immediately began to increase the pressure. A penalty for soft foul and a header three minutes later left us feeling rather flat. One final throw of the dice for 'tinkerman' Atkins and on comes Louden to delicately complete a brace in all but five minutes. A welcome return to league goals following a lengthly spell out with injury. 6-2 final score. A solid display from the entire squad and good form going into the semi final. Particular mentions for Campbell, Forrest, Stokes and well... everyone today. We are adamant we will be retaining our Cup and today's performance was a great warm-up for the next game. Selly Oak Methodist 0 Champions Church 3 Shawn
Devonport says: A difficult match today on a shocking Lion Farm
surface, the ball was bobbling about at every oppurtunity so was never
going to be a free flowing game. Amblecote 2 King's AFC 2 Simon
Ashby says: One of our players commented after the match that
if we had won this game then the footballing Gods themselves may have
cried out 'Nooooo' from the football heavens and football itself may have
imploded so abject was our performance against a good King's team who
deserved to beat us. On the other hand we were missing Robin Davies, Kit
Cartwright, Dozza and Jadon, I would say not only four of our most creative
players but on their day four of the most attacking players in WMCFL,
so a draw against a team fourth in the league was not a bad result. Zion Athletic 3 St Matthew's 2 Zion, whose season is over but the Cup, secured another win to leave them at the bottom of the pack that nestle below the two-horse title race Division One has now become. For St Matthew's, three points could be enough to drag themselves out of the relegation zone but this is another game that got away. It's looking ever more like three from four unless there's a reshuffle, which I'm confident there will be. DIVISION TWO St Thomas 1 Junction Ten 5 An Andrew Rowley hat-trick helped Junction Ten move closer to back-to-back titles yesterday as they beat Sporting Zion 5-1 away from home. With Sheldon losing, they are just one win away from the Division Two title and sit on a ten point lead with just four matches left. Lighthouse Lions 5 Sheldon 2 Despite
losing yesterday, Sheldon are still comfortable in second place, although
the result checked their stride somewhat. Ray Rose reports
on the game: On a sunny Saturday morning, a great day for football, Lighthouse
Lions were back in the promotion race with a great perormance today. Lads very proud of you today. Lyndon Fisher adds: We were well below par today. We knew it would be a tough game with four vital players missing. We played well in patches but Lighthouse's ten men covered every blade of grass. At 3-2 midway through the second half we had a player sent off and that ended any chance we we of getting a result. They scored another two more to win the game deservedly, so we wish them all well. Sporting Zion 1 Rowley College 5 Strange to think that we’ve now beaten Sporting 10-2 over the two matches, because they’re a good side but unlike the earlier game, which was largely about scoring at the right times in a close game, today we were simply too powerful for them. Mark sat this one out with a slight strain but was able to enjoy the fact that every one of the fourteen used made a positive contribution. This was a powerful team performance to match the ones we have recently given against MBD, Kings and Clarendon. We started with pace and intent and went ahead very early on when Leon (who even among this clutch of excellent performances was still our standout player: almost unplayable today) fired in a cross for Nathan Wilkins to sweep in. There followed fifteen minutes of pressure and close things before Sporting really got going. Stew Harvey in particular was everywhere and peppering their goal with efforts, the best of which was pushed up onto the bar and out. Sporting then began to show, playing their neat football and looking likely. However almost as soon as they showed, we got a second: second assist for Leon who took a quick long throw from a standing start which ben Fowler nodded in. We needed this reassurance and shortly after we were reminded why when Lee saved well in a one-on-one. We knew if we went into the second half with the right attitude there should only be one result and so it proved. We were solid in all areas and Christy and Leon were always likely to find chances. We made changes which did nothing to interrupt the flow. Still the next goal was important and Christy, who has been struggling for one lately provided a beauty. He’d just dropped back into midfield to allow the irrepressible Sammy Nelson to join Leon up front and one of Sammy’s early contributions was to slip him a decent little ball which only left him the job of holding off three defenders, drawing the keeper and rolling it in. By then we were rampant and Leon delivered an inch perfect ball for Sammy to head the fourth. Sporting though kept probing and finally got one back. This left Leon to claim his fourth assist with a teasing cross which their lad unluckily but largely unavoidably headed into his own goal. Good luck to Sporting who always live up to their name. MBD United 2 Dynamo Kingswinford 1 MBD collect another three points and remain at slightly longer odds for promotion than most of the clubs above them. Rowley College also seem to have fixed their mis-fire and are now cruising at a pace towards the promotion places; it should be an interesting climax to the season. Dynamo seem to have hit a patch of poor form or bad luck or both at just the wrong time. They are dangerously near to the bottom of the Division, although they are in touch with those above. A couple of wins would sort them out I'm sure. Bournbrook Athletic 3 Renewal Solihull 1 Max Tully scored twice to help his side to a very important three points against fellow relegation candidates Renewal. The division is that close in the bottom half that Bournbrook have now climbed up to sixth and dropped Chawn into potential difficulties. But I think that yesterday's win was perhaps Bournbrook's most important so far this year. They've done well to recover things after the double mauling at the hands of Junction Ten. DIVISION THREE Living Hope Church 0 Brierley Hill AOG 2 Just when I thought it was safe to predict a championship winner, along come Brierley Hill to post a win that throws a spanner in the works. And a big one at that! Jon Bennett says: A HUGE win for the Hill yesterday; not too pretty but we did the basics well: A fantastic defensive performance stifled Living Hope and pressure at corners and free-kicks led to goals from Pilk and Mike. We're nearly over the promotion finish line, we hope to see Living Hope join us if we go up, they are a great set of lads and it's fantastic to see how far they've come since we were both battling at the bottom of the league. All Nations 0 Rockmount United 4 Rockmount steady the ship with an assured looking score line away at All Nations. After taking just two points from three matches, the win was a much needed tonic to settle their nerves. After looking so safe for the Championship and promotion, Rockmount are now sure of nothing except if they win their last three matches, they'll come top of this division. Revival Fires 3 Common Ground United 2 Revival
Fires finally produce a run that their pre-season form promised. With
yesterday's win, Revival have now won their last four and are comfortably
away from the bottom section of Division Three that they were recently
embroiled in. Steve Rose says: Another win for Revival
Fires and another double comeback for the second week running. Pye Green Towers 0 Sandwell United 6 Sandwell United's excellent form continues with another hearty score line, this time a 6-0 away win at Pye Green. If this keeps up then Sandwell will not only have a say in the promotion and championship race but could well be a feature. They can still achieve 43 points if they win all their matches, which would be there or thereabouts come silverware time. Mark
Broome says:
After looking at the Towers recent results we knew that another strong
performance was needed to take the maximum points. Both teams started
brightly however, after about ten minutes a Towers player used bad language
(not directed at anyone) and was sent off. The Towers seemed to give an
extra 10% from then on and tried to make it difficult for us by putting
nine men behind the ball. We took our time and Aaron opened the scoring
midway through the half with a goal of the season contender. He hit a
dipping 35 yard shot from dead centre of the park under the Towers cross
bar. Next Dibble got his first of the afternoon after a great cross from
Matty Hammond and Dibble scored with a cracking header. Beacon Church 0 Darkhouse 1 It's not unusual for teams to score as few goals as Darkhouse, just nineteen this season so far. Neither is it to concede just fifteen but to do both is incredibly rare. Another classic from Darkhouse leaves them with 26 points from 16 matches and snug in sixth. They could even catch Common Ground. |
