Our last game of the season didn’t go to plan with a 2-1 defeat against Selly Oak at Churchfields, which ended our 5 match unbeaten run.
Selly Oak took an early lead after 7 minutes from a through ball squared across the goalmouth and tapped in from close range, 0-1 and it was game on. We endeavoured to find an equaliser and squandered a number of chances, with Selly Oak always a threat to our back line going forward. Unfortunately for us we conceded on 38 minutes, going into the break 2-0 down.
The second half we started on the front foot pushing for a goal which would get us a foot hold in the game. Eventually we broke Selly Oak’s stubborn resistance on 59 minutes with James Grinsted spotting a perfectly time run from Jamie Holder who guided his effort past the Selly Oak keeper, 1-2. Game on!
We continued to press with both teams making substitutions, on 65 minutes a double change for us with Brad Tiernan replacing Danny Wood and Tom Slater replacing Gary Lunt. We continued to press with Selly Oak always capable of catching us on the counter attack which they did on a couple of occasions keeping our keeper Allan Wilde on his toes. Our most notable efforts where from a corner where James Rogers hit the post from close range, and from Rory Taylor who had a goal bound header cleared off the line but Selly Oak held on to claim a vital 3 points.
Well done and good luck to Rob and his team for keeping their season alive. For us, a disappointing defeat and end to our season but that’s football. Overall it has been an excellent first season for us in Division 2 and we look forward to next season, and hopefully continue our progression. Finally, congratulations to our man of the match James Wood who had yet another solid game, improving game by game.
