This morning we entertained Zion Athletic in our first ever meeting in the WMCFL.
We got off to a flying start with Josh Chell scoring after 2 minutes after heading home from a free kick taken by Chris Watson, 1-0. On 11 minutes we extended our lead when Adam Greenhill making his full debut scored, assisted by Danny Wood, 2-0. It was all going well until Adam was dismissed after swearing on 14 minutes. It was our first dismissal of the season, and I very much hope a lesson learnt for Adam, especially if he wants to continue playing for our club.
Zion were reduced to 10 men on 25 minutes, they continued putting us under a lot of pressure and eventually reduced the deficit on 29 minutes, 2-1. We rode our luck on a number of occasions, rarely causing the Zion keeper problems; we held on and went into the break still in the lead.
An error from left back Chris Watson by giving away possession resulted in Zion equalising on 46 minutes, 2-2. Both teams were going for it by now with Zion shading the chances count. On 71 minutes Haydn Ellis passed a ball through to Jamie Holder who struck his shot past the Zion keeper, 3-2. Both teams continued to attack and on 81 minutes Zion equalised, as our defenders were looking for an offside flag which didn’t come, the Zion player slotted home leaving our keeper Allan Wilde with no chance, 3-3.
We had a couple of very good opportunities in the dying embers of the game, firstly Tom Collins having his shot saved from close range, and Jamie Holder who took one touch too many and lost his opportunity to score. Zion almost took all 3 points in the last minute with Allan Wilde saving a goal bound effort pushing it wide, it was a fine save.
Next weekend we travel to Connect Sports for our first meeting of the season.
