Clarendon 0-3 Zion Athletic

Another fantastic result from Zion as we continue our great start to the season. A trip to a wounded Clarendon who had lost heavily the week before is never something you look forward to but a new found discipline and belief added to some new players meant we approached the game with confidence.

Clarendon started the game well and kept the ball well without threatening our keeper. Their main chances came from corners and from one they should have scored at the far post. We gradually got into the game and took the lead, a poor clearance made its way to Shawn who cushioned for Luxton to spin and finish with a fantastic left foot finish into the corner. In truth the rest of the half was a battle in the midfield, Jason curled narrowly over for Clarendon and Shawn scooped over on the half time whistle.

Second half, and again we allowed Clarendon to have the ball but they again struggled to create a chance of note and as we again got a foothold with the excellent Jal starting to dictate things in midfield we got a 2nd. Shawn whipped in a corner that the Clarendon keeper failed to deal with and Leon produced a clever volley over his shoulder which Roger couldn’t keep out on the line despite his best efforts. We then started to create more chances Spud fired wired and Shawn missed by an inch with a long range lob before he got the third after a fantastic Leon ball over the top. Clarendon fired one chance wide but in truth they missed Pablo massively today and Leon had two more shots fire narrowly over that the Clarendon keeper was scrambling for.

So 2 wins and 2 clean sheets mean we are very happy with the start to the season but its only a start and a lot of difficult matches to be played, I believe Clarendon will still finish top 4 this season, they had plenty of the ball but lacked that cutting edge which I’m sure will come when Pablo is back in the fold. Big shout out to Jal today who was man of the match and proved there is life in his old legs yet and to Greg and Coley who marshaled the back 4 very well. Week off next week before we entertain All Saints in a rematch of last year’s Cup final!
