By Nathan Hathaway
St Matts entered the #Lionsden in gale force winds hoping to come out of it with 3 points to take back to Walsall and that was what happened in a dominating display of possession football.
The first goal was a beautifully worked set piece routine, a long throw by Muffett was flicked on by Hissey to the back post where Hathaway rose with an outlandish display of explosive power to head home. There after came a glut of goals, firstly another set piece; the diminutive Humpage blasting home from all of 30 yards followed by a double for Storey, 3 in 2 now for the wing wizard. One coming from a defensive mix up and the second lashing home from a pinpoint Muffett cross.
Half time 4-0
The second half became an exercise in possession with us against the wind, one such move which went from right to left ended with Hathaway being put through by captain Rowley where he finished with aplomb with the outside of his right foot beating the onrushing keeper.
The last goal was again a move of passing brilliance, starting at the back Muffett and Rowley exchanged passes before feeding Hathaway who produced a sublime curling ball to strike partner Humpage who finished with a devilish chip over the stranded Lions keeper and even had the audacity to head the bouncing ball home.
The match was played in a competitive spirit all the way through, Dudley were unfortunate to meet us on a day we were at our very best and we wish them luck for the rest of the season.
Final result St Matthews 6-0 Dudley Lions
