Halesowen Zion 1 v 2 St Marys

This was another tough game away to Halesowen. They were solid and kept it at 0v0 at half time as we struggled to break them down. We made a couple of changes early in the 2nd half and finally broke the deadlock with a close range finish from a corner by Todd Coyne  – who had just come on  – after a clever flick on from Ali Davis at the near post. The game opened up and we started to get in behind the Halesowen defence but couldn’t kill the game off. The 2nd goal did eventually come with a huge clearance by James De Lacy beating their defence and Wiedeman shrugging off the defender (the linesman actually flagged for a penalty but the ref played advantage) and heading past the keeper.
We did have a late scare as a speculative shot form 30 yards bounced harmlessly toward Phil in goal before hitting something and shooting up past his head into the net. I don’t think Phil had another save to make though as we managed to close the game out.
In the end it was a good win, but we could have done with that 3rd goal to save ourselves a nervy finish.
