LHC 5 v Hawbush 3

Ah! This thing called football. One minute you’re down, next minute you’re up,. Hawbush absolutely battered us in the first half. We were too slow and they were running on jet engine fuel. Basically we were being run ragged by a very sharp, very strong team. By half time we were 3-0 down. Outplayed.
The half time team talk was interesting. And so were our second half substitutions. There’s not many teams losing 3-0 that proceed to bring off all their strikers and replace them with midfielders but that’s what we did. Scratching our heads, assistant manager Cal was looking adamant. We obeyed. Suddenly the game changed. We were pressing, Hawbush looked tired. Cal brought himself on as our third sub and within two minutes he scored. Craig laid it back for Cal to hit a sweet left foot first time shot into the top left hand corner 1-3
To win a game from three goals down you need a little luck. First a penalty converted by Robbie after Chrissy T was brought down, then Andy set up Jack to hit a twenty yard shot wickedly deflected of a defender sending the impeccable Hawbush keeper the wrong way. 3-3
Our coup de grace was our fourth. Martin Nicholls was brought down in the penalty D so up stepped Cal our man of the match and tactical genius. Johnny Wilkinson style he stood over the ball for what seemed an age before whistling one in, amazingly in exactly the same spot as his first. 4-3.
In the last minute Robbie added to the score with a 45 yard free kick that wrong footed the keeper. Relief all round. The message for us? Must do better – we need to start playing as a team instead of playing as 11 individuals.
Fair play to Hawbush. They are a good young side. They have pace up front, a keen midfield and a no nonsense back four. They also have an excellent keeper. All in all a genuine asset to our league. I think they will have a very good first season.
