May I begin by congratulating Zion City on winning the Division 3 Cup. They are a very good side and deserved to win. In reality this wasn’t a 5-2 game, but when we started pushing forward after going 3-2 down Zion City punished us.
The game started well for us. Ten minutes in Martin made a good run down the left before cutting in and his through ball fell perfectly for Craig to run on to. Craig’s shot under pressure from a defender hit the post but the referee decided he had been fouled and a cool under pressure Callum converted the subsequent penalty.
From then on the game opened up. LHC had two or three great chances but didn’t take them then Zion struck back with a breakaway goal when LHC lost possession. Two on two in our penalty area a back peddling Robbie unluckily converted Zion’s cross into his own net.
Five minutes later Zion took the lead with a spectacular overhead kick that deflected in off one of our defenders. HT: 1-2
The second half continued being end to end football from two closely matched teams. The next goal was crucial and it was LHC who equalised when Craig’s individual effort saw him place a simple effort into the net 2-2.
At this point of the game Zion seemed to suddenly step up an extra gear and LHC started to struggle against Zion’s extra pace. We battled on but when Jack badly deflected a Zion shot into his own net and (to use a Biblical expression) the writing was on the wall…….
Zion scored two more in the closing stages as we chased the game, including another deflection.
Despite some good fortune with some of their goals Zion certainly deserved their victory and full credit goes out to Michael Clark and his team who look to have transformed Zion this season. Thank you also to the three officials, the referee was very sensible throughout and did a great job in keeping the game flowing.
All in all not a bad season on the pitch. Division 3 champions and Cup runners up to boot. Well done to everybody connected to LHCFC!
