Pye Green 2 Living Hope 3

Steve Farley writes,

A tense top of the table clash totally unsuitable for the faint hearted was played out at the Erasmus Darwin. A must win game as far as we were concerned if we didn’t want to hand the league title to our opponents.

It was honours even during the opening exchanges but Pye Green were looking the more convincing early doors. All that changed though in the 21st minute. Pete managed to wriggle past 3 defenders before a quick one-two with Craig saw him through on goal to take the simplest of chances. Straight from the restart Pye Green threatened down their left flank. LHC lost their concentration and still delirious from our recent goal left their number 9 totally unmarked at the back post to convert the cross 1-1. The rest of the half turned into a real dog fight, both teams scrapping for the ball – exciting but not very pretty . How relieved we were then when LHC retook the lead five minutes before half time. Gregg was having a great game on the right wing and it was his cleared cross that fell to Jack to volley in from a full twenty five yards out. A sure contender for our goal of the season. A goal out of the blue was just what was needed to inject some added vigour, Half Time 1:2

A good half time team talk from Carl – let’s-play-our-game-not-theirs –  seemed to do the trick. LHC suddenly seemed more in control.
Despite going close on a number of occasions the Pye Green defence was strong but we finally earned a two goal advantage following a corner by Pete, only half cleared out to Jack again who’s shot was deflected in, this time from about twelve yards out.

Pye Green then went down to ten men after a sending off but it didn’t stop Pye Green from throwing caution to the wind for the last fifteen minutes. Their efforts were rewarded five minutes from time when they grabbed a goal back with a looping header from a corner. To our relief LHC saw out the remaining minutes without any major panic to grab what was, in effect, a six pointer.

A quick word about our referee. Only a young lad he was under a lot of pressure the whole match but kept his head throughout. I thought he had a very good game.
