After a great Pre-Season with a real focus on a good passing game, plus some new additions to the team, the ‘hull were hopeful of picking something up away to a team tipped for promotion.
We knew Pye Green had a real physical side to their game and they didn’t disappoint. Launching boys into the box as quickly as possible and causing problems for our back line with the physical presence of the Pye Green target men.
It took just two minutes for Pye Green to open the scoring, a long throw was flicked on and in by one of the big target men. Having lost 5-0 on the opening day against Pye Green last year, I feared the worst.
But we held tight, and aside from a couple of hairy moments at the back where Pye Green threatened to break through, we started to get our foot on the ball and impose our passing game which we have spent so much time practising. Shifting the ball around and utilising the pace of Smith and Hales.
Half-time came and we felt very much in the game, and we continued the second half as we played in the first, slick passing moves and good movement. Our efforts were finally rewarded when Reeson carved an opening for Smith, sweeping into the area and curling his shot into the top corner for 1-1.
We continued to press, sensing victory but with few clear cut chances. Then another throw and another headed goal for Pye Green gave them the initiative once again.
Monyhull peppered the Pye Green goal with shots from the edge of the area with little success, though a disallowed goal could have changed matters. The game drew to a close with Monyhull once again coming away with nothing to show.
Good showing from some of our new debutants, Cardall, Mander, Armstrong-Sly, Smith and B.Pritchard
The fact that we were so disappointed speaks volumes about how far we’ve come and how much we expect of ourselves this season. We look forward to the return fixture.
