Renewal Solihull 2 Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 2

This morning’s game saw two of the top teams in Division 2 play each other, with us travelling the long distance over to Solihull. The game started brightly with both teams trying to pass the ball round on a very difficult surface due to the heavy rain in the week, it looked as if it would be impossible to pass on it. This game was a very good example of the old saying “a game of two halves”. Wolves had the better of the first half possession and we should have found ourselves 2 or 3 goals up within the first half hour but wasted some very good chances. The dead lock was broken when the ball found Steven Worley in the opposition area, he was able to spin his marker and fire a shot into the bottom corner giving their keeper no chance at all. 1-0. The HT whistle blew and we were disappointed only to be 1 goal up at the break.

The second half started with Renewal taking control, passing it around very nicely, their possession was rewarded shortly into the half when we were only able to half clear a corner, it fell to their player on the edge of the area who fired a shot into the top corner. It wasn’t the start to the second half we had wanted after having most of the possession in the first half. Renewal, now continued to have most of the possession, although we managed to steal the lead mid way into the second half when their Goalkeeper came off his line and the ball bounced to Nat Lodge who smartly chipped the keeper from outside the area. 2-1. With our recent good form we were confident we could see out the remainder of the game, only for Renewal to equalize again in exactly the same fashion as the first goal with us being unable to clear the home side’s corner. Once again it was struck into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

A couple of substitutions for both teams in the second half improved both sides, with both teams having very good chances at the end to steal the 3 points. All in all, a draw was a fair result; with both sets of players playing the game in the highest spirits.  We hope to get back to winning ways next week and progress in the cup. Good luck to Renewal for the rest of season and we look forward to hosting you later on in the season.
