Rowley College 5 Zion City 1

Decent game and very satisfying result today. The game was played in the best spirit: Zion City are a credit to the league and I thoroughly appreciated meeting Georgina and enjoying some good natured banter with the guy who was encouraging them from the side (this is one of the extended joys of competitive football). It was also a game thoroughly well run by young Jimmy Appleby (supported by Daz and Chloe): I was genuinely impressed.

What all of this preamble amounts to is an open game which asked both sides to see how much football they could play. Early doors that looked to be us and we even got the vital first goal when Matty Williams nodded a corner back across goal and Ben Fowler nodded it over the line. Brad Rogers was having a blinder on the right (he was my man-of-the-match) and Sammy had another very tidy afternoon up top. Mark had chosen to put himself on the bench and as the half developed I thought his absence was felt. Zion City want to play football the right way and for twenty five minutes in the middle of the half they passed us off the pitch. During this second phase, Lee also made a magnificent save throwing himself bravely to block a certain goal. This proved even more important when, completely against the run of play we got a second when Sammy subtle pass put Ben in for a second and then we kicked on. HT 2-0.

Mark came on just after half time and Fowler completed his hat trick with a brilliant angled drive. Then Mark’s foul led to a free kick which they smartly scored from. They have good players, a good shape about them and a terrific attitude: we feared a revival. Luckily Bradley’s excellent morning was soon to produce a tangible result when he jinked into the box and finished gleefully! Mark completed the scoring when his free kick squirmed under their keeper. Sound from us today: defensively strong, busy and competitive all over the pitch and reasonably ruthless! 5-1

All the best to Zion City!
