Neither team has played much recently and it showed in a scrappy game not helped by a strong swirling wind and a large, rock hard, bobbly pitch (I have the blisters to prove it after not taking my moulded boots!). Firstly credit to Sandwell who did not play like a team currently bottom of the league and destined for relegation. They had a lot of pace in the team both in attack and defence and started the game harrassing us at every opportunity. Both teams tried to get the ball down and Sandwell had the first half chances. However we slowly blew off the cobwebs and started to get in behind the Sandwell defence culminating in Coleman beating the Sandwell player to a through ball, cutting back inside and placing the ball past the goalkeeper. With this goal our confidence rose and we started to create more chances, however Sandwell were well in the game and created a succession of corners, with one 2nd ball into the box leaving their player with a free header at goal after some slack marking. Luckily for us he put it over. This spurred us on and we forced a penalty after Tim Myatt was tripped. Unfortunately Harris placed it just wide…We kept pushing and missed a number of chances until Beeson scored just before half time with an amazing goal from a corner performing some kind of back flip to score with the back of his heel above his head (1st time its worked at the 50th attempt Tink!?).
2nd half was more of the same with us pushing, and Sandwell breaking with pace and skill but never quite forcing a good enough chance to get the goal they needed to get back into the game. We scored the 3rd to clinch the game in around the 55 minute mark with a brilliant free kick from the left by Harris scraping Weideman’s hair on its way in. Overall a decent away result, against a Sandwell team who were much better than last time we played them. Was a good game to get rid of any rustiness ahead in our ‘on paper’ harder games ahead.
