Sheldon 2 v 7 St Mary’s

11th April

Following Sheldon’s 6 v 0 win away at City Church last week we knew that they would have a good team out today, and they did have a number of last seasons cup final and title challenging team on show. However we also had a very strong 11 and squad available and on a very small pitch, against the wind, we managed to put in our best 45 minutes for a while to be 4 v 0 up at half time. The first came early on when Locke hooked a bouncing ball into the corner from 10 yards out after a long throw, Wiedeman then had a good chance from a knock down (possibly offside anyway) but made up for it with an excellent finish to make it 2 v 0 shortly after. Sheldon were looking to get the ball forward but couldn’t make a ‘good’ chance despite forcing a number of corners. We then got a third when a poor clearance dropped to De Lacy who steered it into the net, and the fourth came when Weideman got a 2nd. HT 0v4

We started the 2nd half as we did the first and settled the game beyond doubt when Coleman beat his man on the left and pulled the ball back for Locke to expertly finish. At 5v0 we seemed to take our foot off the gas and from a long throw and a few ricochets’ Sheldon smashed in. However we were much more clinical today and went up the other end and scored our 6th through Coleman. The game was far too end to end for our liking and Sheldon scored their 2nd after good work down the right from their forward, he cut in and
managed to squeeze the ball home. We were not finished and substitute Rudd came on and made a difference when he got clear and put a great shot against the post with the rebound falling straight to him on the penalty spot where the steered a composed finish past the keeper at the 2nd time of asking.

In the end it was a great result, and I am sure that Neil will be pleased that we let a couple of goals in to get us up the entertainment table. ‘Are you not Entertained!?’ (c) Russell Crowe…
