St Mary’s 3 Amblecote 1

Report from Phil Deeley of Amblecote

We set out with a few injuries and players having to fill in in unfamiliar position but that is the joys of managing. So we started the game having not played for 7 weeks on a pitch that every player struggled to stand up on. After a competitive first half where both St Mary’s and us had good chances with St Mary’s being more clear cut, ┬ábut a massive credit to Stu who did everything to block them out in goal and he has some real bruises to show how determined he was to try and keep a clean sheet. With half time looming we switched off on a second successive corner and there unmarked number 8 nodded in. We came out well in the second half and where well on top, pressing and getting corners, trying to slice open the St Mary’s defence. From one of the corners Silva rose and powered in a wonderful delivery from Kit. After the goal we tried to get the advantage but St Mary’s broke and due to St Mary’s subs bench finally turning up, we stepped off their players and the substitute Morrison picking his space and finishing very well. We had some clear cut 1 on 1’s but the ball always seemed to bobble, missed chances cost us. As we were pushing for the equaliser and Jay Smith as always putting in a shift, even playing with an injury, was struggling for pace St Mary’s broke well and finished off the game.
