St Marys 3 v 1 Amblecote

We had the usual amateur football start to the day with us going from 4 subs on Friday night to 1 plus 2 on their way by kick off, (for a home game!). However after a slight re-jig we still had a strong starting 11 and subs who were to come on and win us the game.

We kicked downhill first half and created some good chances with Weideman and Coleman always causing problems and Jones beating the full back to get good balls into the box. Unfortunately we failed to get many on target and when we did the Amblecote keeper saved bravely on more than one occasion. (We hope he is ok!) Amblecote were always a threat sitting deep and breaking quickly to their two lively forwards. I feel we had the better chances and could have been a couple clear when with 2 minutes left until half time I went up for a long throw and flicked on for Weideman to finish from close range. A deserved lead but Amblecote were well in the game.

Second half was a lot more even with Amblecote putting us under pressure down the slope creating a succession of corners which we defended well until Jadon rose to head in, when I thought I was about to clear… This seemed to liven us up along with a couple of substitutions and it was good work from Morrison coming on that created the 2nd goal. After some good link up play he stepped to the right of the defender and bent one into the corner from just outside the 18 yard box. The introduction of Coyne then helped spur us on further and we created a few more good chances to finish the game before I got on the end of a free kick and knocked it down for Coyne to finish.

In the end it was a hard fought match and combined with our last kick of the match 3v2 win away at Amblecote they will probably feel they deserve more from our two games this season. It was good to get a competetive match in before another free week, and then a slightly interesting match vs Sheldon…
