St Marys 3 v 3 Sheldon

It was a quirk of the fixture list to put us at home to our biggest rivals from last season on the first day of the season, when our last game of last season was again Sheldon at home! It gave them an early chance to exact revenge!
Both teams were missing important players with the season starting a week earlier than usual, but both also had a good team out, albeit Sheldon had the bare 11.
We started well keeping the ball and Sheward and Jones putting in dangerous balls to no avail. Sheldon then had a few chances on the break getting in behind with our stand in keeper Nelson out quickly to save at the strikers feet on a couple of occasions. However St Marys took the lead when some good play found Sheward on the edge of the box who flighted a delightful chip over the stranded keeper.
This seemed to spark Sheldon into life and they pushed on as we relaxed a bit after getting the goal. However the equaliser came in fortunate fashion, from a free kick just inside our half which was caught in the wind and Nelson could only parry into the net.
The rest of the half was bitty with neither team on top, but Sheldon went in ahead as a goal kick was headed straight back into their strikers path who finished nicely. HT 1v2.
The second half carried on as the first had finished with no one on top and a few half chances for each team, but as we started to exert a bit of pressure Sheldon broke and with a very strong suspicion of handball the striker brought the ball down from a long pass, with the ball dropping into his colleagues path to slot home for 1v3.
At this point it was not looking a good start to our title defence (Kovacs Kolumn was nearly correct!), however we managed quite a few comebacks last year and we did it again! Coyne was introduced and the fresh legs game Beeson a bit more space to firstly win, and then convert a corner with a bullet header. We were now on top and the 3rd goal came when locke surged into the box and fired the ball under the keeper.
With around 20minutes to go we felt that the win was there to be taken, although Sheldon were continually dangerous with their pace on the break. Unfortunately we did everything but score, hitting posts, bars and some tremendous blocks from Sheldon defenders.
In the end we couldn’t force the win and Sheldon actually had a couple of half chances and corners in the final few minutes. But we have to be happy with a point in our first game, especially against a good team like Sheldon when we were 3v1 down.
