St Marys 5 v 1 City Church

Firstly can we pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Mikey Harper who passed away following a car accident last week. As far as I am aware he has not played in this league but a number of our squad play for the same sunday football team and say he was a great guy who will be sorely missed. It puts every game into perspective!

As is the norm in amateur football, once again we were missing players (some different ones this week) so I managed to sneak back into the starting 11 following our fantastic result away at Connect last time out. We also dragged former player Cook out of bed who was on a trip back from London to give us two on the bench.

The game started off fairly evenly although City had more possession down the hill and made their extra numbers in midfield count, esspecially once Harris went off injured after only 15 minutes and we had a very attack minded team on the pitch (although bringing in top scorer Wiedeman is never a bad move). With City dominating possession and hastling us all over the pitch, we resorted to hitting them on the break and after a couple of chances we finally went ahead when Locke got on the end of a good move and slotted the ball home into the far corner for 1 v 0. This is where we would normally take over, but City kept pressing and should really have equalised when their striker found himself clear through and Lutwyche pulled off a cracking save. I think that this was the catalyst for us to start playing and we could have had a couple more goals in the final 10 minutes of the half. HT 1v0

Half time brought another forced substitution with Sheward having to be replaced by Cook. We also had a re jig freeing up ‘Tink’ Beeson to push into his more usual forward role and giving us more shape as a consequence. We were much better in the second half, keeping the ball and probing down the hill at the City defence. The decisive 2nd goal came from a Coleman corner which was bravely headed in by Wiedeman who took a glove to the head. Then shortly afterwards an identical ball in was met by Tink to make it 3v0. City continued to pose a threat on the break, but it was a speculative shot which brough them a goal back with the ball bouncing 10yards out and shooting up above Lutwyche who made a fantastic save only for the ball to fall to the City winger 2 yards out in the middle of the goal.

Again this spured us on and we soon added a 4th and 5th through another great Locke finish and Wiedeman. Whilst City had given us a great game for 70 minutes I think that we should have added more in the final 20 with a number of great chances and a couple of very close penalty shouts. City did have one more good chance when a ball in from the right would have been an easy tap in but for Matt Beeson tracking back superbly to put the striker under pressure with the ball ending up over the bar.

Another great win and test for the strength of our squad. Cup action next week vs Wolves and Perton.
