St Marys 5 v 1 Connect Sports

1st November

Having not played Connect for a few years we didn’t really know what to expect apart from memories of pace up front from the Ricketts duo as the league’s two top scorers, and the familiar names of Cooper and Hunter transferred from City Church meaning it would be a battle in the middle of the park! Oh, and the fact that they had won 9 out of 9…
We had pretty much a full strength squad to choose from until a couple of late injury drop outs, but went in with confidence having not lost a game. The match started with Connect pressing us and winning a succession of corners and Phil pulling off a good save from distance. But we soon got into our stride and exchanged a couple of one on one chances, although I think ours were slightly more clear cut. We then continued to make the better chances but couldn’t take them, and Connect were always dangerous if we let them get in behind us. We took the lead when Harris spotted the Connect keeper off his line following a half clearance and scored a superbly executed chip over his head. HT 1v0
Second half we knew that Connect would come at us and they did force chances down the hill, but a flurry of 3 goals in 10-15 minutes from Wiedeman, Locke and an OG by their keeper following a Coleman shot effectively killed the game off. We seemed to relax at that point and Connect put us under pressure knowing that with 30 minutes left a couple of quick goals in reply could change the game. They got one of these when a ball dropped following a long throw and their right winger caught a sweet left footed volley low into the bottom corner, a great finish. This woke us up, and we finished the game off with 15 minutes left when Coleman broke clear and finished nicely to make it 5v1.
A week off next week, before the rearranged cup game with Clarendon who I’m sure will be after revenge after our comeback in last weeks match…
