St Marys 6 v 0 Charlemont Star

The score line in this game doesn’t entirely reflect the way it went as it was only 1 v 0 at half time as we had a sluggish start and Charlemont were as usual solid and organised with a threat going forward. After missing a number of chances with Tink clear through and myself (Myatt) both being denied by excellent saves by the Charlemont goalkeeper, the breakthrough finally came when Locke broke strongly down the right and squared for Wiedeman to slot in from close range. Charlemont were looking most dangerous from a succession of set pieces without really testing Phil in goal whilst getting close. HT 1-0.

Charlemont started the 2nd half with their best spell of the game keeping the ball well, putting pressure on our area without creating a clear chance apart from a free kick in a very good area and some long range shots, one of which Phil had to tip over. However we managed to create a couple of chances on the break and the decisive 2nd goal was all route one, a huge kick from Phil over the Charlemont defence left Wiedeman with a lot to do, but he bullied their defence off the ball and slotted in. Following this we took control and Charlemont seemed to sense that the game was gone as I crossed towards Wiedeman forcing an own goal after a quick throw from Davis, this was quickly followed by a brave back post header from ‘Tink’ Beeson, squeezing it in. We then made use of the squad bringing on 3 subs who all made a good contribution. Firstly a hatrick goal from Wiedeman following a great through ball from substitute Jones and then a composed finish from another substitute Sheward after good work by Matt Beeson who had also come on.

In the end it was a great result to start the season with following our comeback victory in the Kevin Kovacs Trophy. We have an enforced week off next week before we entertain newly promoted Monyhull who gave us a good game in pre season.
