St Thomas 0 Rowley 4

After a run of defeats which culminated in a poor turnout (rather than performance) last week we got just what we needed this morning: a convincing win that could have been even more so. My old mate Rob Hill continues to keep St Thomas competitive but without the injured goal machine that is Tommy Wright they lacked a proper threat today and we were strong and purposeful. With Dave Scott adding a bit of strength in centre mid alongside Nathan and Mark and Chris commanding at the back Rowley offered a mobile if traditional 4-4-2 and lots of controlled football. Even up the slope on a heavy pitch we managed both a decent passing game and momentum and it did look a matter of time before we scored.
Actually it took an own goal, headed in by their defender from Sammy’s cross under pressure from Leon. Sammy Nelson was excellent today , particularly in an action-packed first half in which he chased everything and caused lots of problems. This culminated in brilliant work ahead of our second goal where he attacked down the left before stepping inside and threading in a gold-star ball for Leon to flick home. 2-0 should have become 3-0 or 4-0 but poor decisions from our lads and tidy keeping from Rob Wood, who continues to deny the aging process, kept us out and in some doubt (St Thomas turned around a 0-2 in the Cup last season).
Luckily the vital third was ours early in the second half when Ben headed home, which allowed us to give a decent run to debutant Lee Inett (no relation) and miss a further bucketful of chances (Leon was uncharacteristically wasteful today). Clive was once again as good as anybody and Olly, back in his old position on the left finished the scoring with one that squirmed under their sub keeper. We ended pleased with the result and performance. All the best to Rob and his lads.
