In our seventeenth meeting with St Thomas over the last fifteen years we recorded our biggest victory today with a 5-1 away win. This was, however, a very different St Thomas side as Steve has put his faith in youth so many familiar faces (including my old mate Rob Hill) were missing. Tommy Wright was still there and a threat though and they have some decent young footballers. That said this is an unforgiving division with no easy games and these lads will have to step up quickly to the mark.
We had Mark and Matt at centre half in the absence of Chris and Dave and Hunter back up front and started the game sharply. Christie hit the bar with a flying volley before Matty Stanton headed us in front from a corner. Things were looking comfortable so it was a real blow when Lance received a slightly unfortunate red card. St Thomas rallied and had a couple of efforts. Then we took a massive step towards victory when Ben crossed, Hunter pounced and Olly followed up to score just before half time.
We had Leon available from half time and their bare eleven became ten as a result of an injury. However at ten a side they had their best spell and young Luke danced around half of our team before cracking in a beauty. Mark was apoplectic! For a short while we were shaken and Lee made a good save. However we regained our composure and prompted by Mark and Christie took a proper control of the game and largely laid siege to their goal. Hunter finally collected his first of the season with a header, Ben danced into the box for his inevitable goal and Sammy and Ben set Leon up for a cracking finish. We probably should have had more because we played well. All the best to Steve and his lads.
