Wednesbury Baptist 7 – 1 Zion City

22nd November

Well its been a while since I’ve found some time to get a match report into the league so ill start with a brief overview of our last few games. November for us so far has been arguably the toughest month of the season so far on paper as it pitted us against Div 1 top 4 side Halesowen Zion in the Cup which saw us unfortunately lose in extra time 2-1 after an error from our keeper in some of the worst conditions we have played in whereby the wet ball skidded out of his gloves to drop over the line. After the performance we put in though it left us in confident mood especially after noticing that our next opponents Dudley Lions manager Steve had come to watch us hold Halesowen to a draw through 90 minutes. We then took our confidence into the following week where our 5-1 win over them was unfortunately marred by a serious injury to one of there players who we wish a speedy recovery this tricky away tie was then followed by title challengers Zion City.

The game started fairly evenly but both sides playing open attacking football and it did not take long for the deadlock to be broken when Pete swung in a corner for Craig to divert past the keeper 1-0, it was soon 2-0 when Nick’s perfectly weighted through ball put Pete through one on one with the keeper who he calmly went round before placing the ball into the bottom corner. The game then appeared to slow slightly as both teams felt the pace of which the game had started. Right back Robbie then got himself on the scoresheet when struck from 20 yards out which the keeper managed to get a hand to but was hit with too much power and unfortunately for him he could only palm into the side of the netting. Half time 3-0.

The second half started with us continuing where left off and both Pete and Craig doubled their tallies for the game before Zion got a consolation goal from a well worked set piece. Jack then got himself on the scoresheet with a venomous drive from 12 yards out that left the keeper no chance. Left back Matty then sealed the game in style with a 35 yard lob of the opposing keeper who had come to the edge of his box to push his defence out.

Full time 7-1 and a very important result against one of our apparent rivals for promotion this season, credit goes to the whole of Zion City who never gave up regardless of the disadvantage and scoreline which is great to see. Also a big thank you to the officials who controlled the game well and allowed the match to flow without too many stoppages.

On to next week where we play the apparently rapidly improving Brierley Hill.
