Wollaston Free Athletic 2 – 5 Renewal Solihull

Today’s first match for us at Coneygre was a real battle from the start, with our key centre back still suspended from last season and Renewal Solihull exploiting that missing link, it’s fair to say we were under the kosh from the get go. However in the first half Wollaston played the better football, but early on Solihull managed to pinch a goal that bounced from post to post and they went ahead, but soon after, Wollaston conceded a corner and a lovely volley from Alan Gethins saw us equalise. Both teams really turned things up a notch eager to score the next goal, and very soon Wollaston did pinch another. Chris Hawkins received a lovely ball at his feet although surrounded by Solihull defenders, he went alone, turned the last man inside out and threaded a beautiful touch across the net!! Wollaston were at the races and a huge battle in midfield went on until the first half was up, there was not much in it. Second half Wollaston still confident of winning more goals came out attacking from the moment the whistle went, but we were playing a different team second half, Solihull made some clean breaks down both sides of the pitch and some lovely crosses found the head of Solihull’s number 6 who comfortably slotted one in, almost straight away Renewal were definitely “renewed” and managed to pinch another. Wollaston were deflated and discombobulated, fitness was the key for Solihull and Wollaston’s downfall with Renewal winning everything in midfield and using the width of the pitch they crossed a few more with man of the match number 6 finding the net a few more times.
Paul Blewitt tried to chip the keeper from around 40 yards and hit the bar, Wollaston hopes of three points slipping away quickly. The match ended 5-2, and Solihull really deserved their victory and ended Wollaston’s reign as undefeated in the league.
