Wolverhampton and Perton Churches 5 Connect Sports 4 (a.e.t)

8th November

This week we hosted Connect in the cup. After a weeks break from our biggest win (9-0) over St Thomas, confidence was high. In conditions what can only be described as terrible, this game surely made up for the weather. Connect certainly started the much brighter side and took an early lead after some poor marking from a corner. Connect now had more confidence and started to work the ball round nicely. Doubling their lead shortly after. As the game went on Connect were 4-0 up in the space of 20 minutes and thoughts must have been on double figures. Although if we would of taken early chances it could of and maybe should of been 4-4. The rain continued to pour and the pitch was starting to cut up. We knew we had to dig deep in this game. After creating another couple of chances, one producing a corner, a brilliant ball from Worley, straight onto Luke’s head and into the top corner. 4-1! Feeling we more than deserved this we grew in confidence by adding a second before half time almost a carbon copy of the first goal, this one met by Daz 4-2 at HT.
During the interval we knew we were right back in this game and genuinely had a chance to win it. We started bright in the second half and added a third goal with a lovely finish by Natty! 4-3, the comeback was well and truly on! The game seemed to go quiet for about 10 minutes with us pushing and pushing for the equaliser! We finally got it around 10 mins from FT when a penalty was awarded and although it had to be retaken for players encroaching into the area. Ste Worley called slotted home.4-4 what a game! The drama was not over as Connect were awarded a peno in the final minute. They missed the penalty by blazing it over the bar! 4-4 extra time!
We knew connect were here for the taking now and we pushed for the winner. Our fitness was showing and after a goalless first half of ET we finally completed the comeback to go ahead in the game 5-4 after a great finish from Anos. We then saw out the game with some fantastic defending. An absolute cracker of a game and a real advert for what the league is about. Every player from both teams left everything on the pitch and the respect at the end of the game was brilliant! We look forward to a cup run now and have gained massive confidence from this result. Good luck to Connect for the rest of the season.
