What a torrid way for Hawbush to start their second full season in WMCFL, with a 10-3 reverse in the opening game against Zion CIty.
Last season Zion put us to the sword and we always struggle with their style as they are very quick and have great movement….. were much better when were against big lads! In truth circumstances conspired against us on Saturday. From our squad of about 25 players we had Lee and Jimmy Davies injured, two of our strikers Ste and Dan away, last seasons player of the year Scriv was called into work, Arron and Tukka were both unavailable as were Sam, Jack and Piri…. at least 7 of these could make our strongest XI. So we knew it was a tough task and so it proved as we found ourselves 5-0 at half time.
Fielding a number of inexperienced younger players we were delighted with their response after the break and we pulled it back to 5-2 in the second half with Arron Hope scoring underneath the keeper after he found space in the box and Mitch Pountney smashed home after a great move on the right hand-side.
But in truth, Zion were just too good and began to extend their lead at regular intervals although a late Simon Ashby header at least gave us 3 goals away from home which is no mean feat.
The test of how we will do this year will come over the next 2 or 3 Saturdays as some of our squad start to return, but a very difficult opening weekend all in all.
