Zion Athletic 0 v 4 St Marys

21st March

Not knowing which Zion Athletic would turn up we took 4 subs along to our longest trip by far in Kidderminster, and it was lucky we did as the scoreline doesn’t entirely reflect the game and we lost Locke with 15mins gone to a pulled hamstring. It was 0 v 0 at half time with Zion pushing with the wind. I still think we had the better chances with Wiedeman getting clear down the left and Coleman also getting in behind, but the ball wouldn’t fall with Zion looking dangerous on the break. We eventually opened the scoring in the second half when a Harris free kick from the left went straight in (wind assisted). from then on we gradually added to the score with a Green corner going straight in, an Oldham header (really!!!!) following an excellent Wiedeman header across goal, and another Harris goal direct from a free kick. Three goals direct from set pieces may seem lucky but we feel that it was ultimately deserved, even though at 4 v 0 we went head to head with both teams playing great football and Zion had their only shot on target with Phil pulling off a great save. (today showed how lucky we are to have a good keeper with it being pointed out that he has conceded 4 goals on 14 games…) Charlemont next week!
