Having clinched the Division Two title with our draw against Selly Oak we knew today was all about enjoying ourselves and this was manager Carl’s basis for the pre-game team talk.
The game started off at a blistering pace with both sides creating chances early on, the deadlock was broken when Zion cut inside our right back and his low driven cross hit Jack and ended up in the back of our net 1-0 Zion. The scores were soon level when Nick drove from our own half to the edge of the Zion 18 yard box beating 3/4 players on the way before picking out Pete who laid it on a plate for Craig to score at the back post 1-1. This led to us gaining the upper hand and we made our dominance count with two more goals from Craig, completing his hat trick and giving us a real handle on the game, HT 1-3.Our half time team talk was all positive and manager Carl mixed the line up a little with club captain Si send up top from centre back in search of his first league goal along with a few other alterations mixing things up, these changes though upset our rhythm and then was further disrupted when our other centre half Chris had to come off with an injury leaving us with a very makeshift back 4. Zion took full advantage of this getting a goal around the hour mark to give them hope of the win they were desperately seeking to help their promotion push. The game continued with Zion pushing for an equaliser and we caught them on the break when Fidel sprinted down the left wing and beat the keeper to make it 4 goals in his last 3 games, 2-4 and it nearly got worse for Zion when Jase glanced Pete’s corner narrowly past the far post with the keeper stuck to the spot . Credit to Zion they did not give up hope on the game and continued to press for goals, taking off defenders and replacing them with strikers, their intent was clear and it also paid off when they scored two goals late on to secure a 4-4 draw! A fantastic game of football and all the best to Zion for the rest of the season.
A big thank you from all at Wednesbury Baptist to the League Committee for all the hard work they do to allow us to turn up on a Saturday morning and play the game we love.
