St Andrew’s Netherton 6vs2 Saint Michael
St Andrew’s Netherton soared to 6-2 triumph against Saint Michael on Saturday to secure a second consecutive WMCFL victory.
Warren Grant, Chris Hunter, Richard Thomas-Robinson Chris Hall and Craig Oldfield (2) were all on target in what was a dominant and eye-catching display from Dave Challoner’s men in Bilston.
St Andrew’s started brightly and had several chances to take an early lead. James Townsend, who switched from between the sticks at Chawn Hill to the central striker, Gez Mulholland and Richard Thomas-Robinson all saw efforts saved by Saint Michael’s stopper.
But the breakthrough didn’t take too much longer to arrive. Mulholland’s cross from the left was met by the towering Grant who nodded into the bottom corner with less than 20 minutes on the clock.
St Andrew’s had several chances to further their advantage before the break, but they wasted a string of favourable opportunities to double their lead.
And Saint Michael made them pay moments before half-time. A cross from the right found its way to back post where Przemyslaw Gorka was waiting to fire home from inside the area.
St Andrew’s, frustrated by the half-time scoreline, came out firing after the restart.
Another pin-point cross, this time from Thomas-Robinson, was powerfully met by skipper Chris Hunter who buried his header beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Thomas-Robinson then added a third from inside the six-yard box before super-sub Craig Oldfield stroked home a fourth from 25 yards.
Fellow substitute Chris Hall bagged his first St Andrew’s goal – a fine finish from an acute angle inside the penalty area – to make it five.
And number six wasn’t far behind. Oldfield tapped in from an identical position to Thomas-Robinson.
Saint Michael pulled one back late on but it did little to deter from what was another very impressive performance from St Andrew’s Netherton.
