KOVACS’ KOLUMN 1st November

Due to illness, last weeks review is delayed, (although with only 4 match reports received it will probably be brief), and the forecast for today’s matches is just a quick bash.

The match of the day must surely be St Mary’s vs high flying Connect Sports who are the only team with a 100% winning record. Both teams are scoring freely and also have tight defences, so something must surely give tomorrow. I’m expecting goals aplenty here but who will be the winners? If Connect win they will put themselves in a strong position whereas St Mary’s really need to win to stay in the hunt.  3-2 to St Mary’s.

Sheldon Community Church face Charlemont Star and they must also start to win their games to keep the pressure on the teams at the top. I’m expecting them to have enough about them to overcome a hard working Charlemont Star, possibly by 2 goals.

I’m also expecting a fair few goals in the game between Chawn Hill Church and Halesowen Zion. Chawn’s recent defensive record gives any opposing team hope of banging a few goals in. (It’s a little bit like facing the Villa if you need to get some points lately)! I think Chawn need to get points out of this game or they will be in a relegation battle. I’m going for a score draw.

St Thomas’ Aldridge, like Chawn, need to pick up some points quickly as they face Rowley College, who, a few weeks ago didn’t know where the back of the net was. Times have changed though and I expect them to carry on their scoring exploits from last week with a 3 goals winning margin.

It still looks strange to see City Church languishing at the bottom of the table but you only need to look at the Goals Scored part of the table to see why they are struggling. I’m not expecting their opponents to hand them any favours and fully expect a Zion Athletic win.

In Division 2 top of the table Wednesbury Baptist play 3rd placed Rockmount United. Wednesbury’s defence will be tested but I think their experience will see them through and believe they will bag all 3 points.

Second placed Zion City travel to play Maple Leaf Rovers QMC who are having a steady season. I’m not sure of the personnel in the Maple Leaf squad anymore as I used to know a few of the old boys who played for them. I think most of them have moved on now but I still believe the pace of Zion City will be too much for Maple Leaf with Zion having a 3 clear goals win.

Renewal Solihull, who were my dark horse to be Champions, face Corinthians SK and really need to bag all 3 points if they are to stay in touch with Wednesbury and Zion City. I’m led to believe that Corinthians aren’t quite getting the rewards for the football they are playing. This game may give them the chance to get some more points. Draw.

5th plays 6th with Dudley Lions playing Monyhull Church. Monyhull must really be enjoying this season but Dudley will also be eyeing up a place at the top of the table come seasons end and their extra fire power up front leads me to tip them to win.

Pye Green Towers don’t seem to have rediscovered their form from last season just yet and tomorrows opponents, Saint Michael, give them another tricky team to overcome. Sitting on the fence in this one and forecasting a draw.

The bottom 4 teams all play each other so maybe a chance to catch up with those teams just above them.

Selly Oak Methodist travel to South Road to play Brierley Hill AOG. Rob O’Neil always hated playing there when I was with Chawn Hill Church. Then again, he wasn’t on his own! I’m leaning towards a Selly Oak win but the South Rd factor means i’m going for yet another draw.

Bottom placed Sandwell United host Hawbush and after looking at both teams defensive records this game should surely throw up lots of goals! It’s hard to see a team turn up week in week out and not get a win but with only 5 goals this season it’s hard for me to see a Sandwell win. So that’s exactly what I’m going for!

So much for a brief preview!!!!!
