Kovacs’ Kolumn 21st December Preview

Well, we come to the last Saturday before Christmas and the effect of Council and School Pitch closures has had a huge impact on the amount of fixtures scheduled for this week. We only have 7 scheduled matches and if the wet weather continues for the rest of the week I reckon City Church vs Amblecote will bite the dust as well.

In Division One, Sheldon have a chance to make up ground on league leaders St Mary’s who will be looking keenly at this result. Sheldon’s opponents, Zion Athletic, will be looking to bounce back after their narrow defeat to Clarendon. Zion need to win this game if they are to have the slightest chance of any last lingering title challenge. I believe that Sheldon’s desire will be the greater on the day and that they will win a close encounter.

City Church host Amblecote if Rowheath is playable. They will be looking for revenge as I believe that Amblecote finished off City’s title hopes with their 2-1 win on 30th November. Whilst City have games in hand they need to win them, otherwise they will be looking at the teams below them and not the ones above. I think Amblecote have enough about them to pinch a point here and predict a 1-1 draw.

Rowley College make the short trip to play Halesowen Zion. Rowley are playing with confidence and I can’t see any reason why they won’t pass the 20 points mark on Saturday with a win over Zion. Halesowen Zion are having a tough run of late having played most of the top teams but I see no change of fortune for them this week.

Only 1 game in Division Two and it’s a biggy. Chawn Hill Church play host to Wolverhampton and Perton, a team that has already beaten them twice this season knocking Chawn out of the Cup 2-1 followed by a 5-1 thumping the following week. I thought the 5-1 league defeat would rock Chawn but they have performed admirably since then. I believe this is a must win for Wolverhampton if they are to be Champions whereas if Chawn win it almost knocks their opponents out of the title race. My old Chawn links would love to see them win but I’m going with Wolverhampton to make it 3 wins against Chawn this season and keep the title race wide open.

3 games in Division Three and with second placed Dudley Lions having no game it gives Living Hope Church the chance to claim second spot. I fully expect them to come away from their game with Brierley Hill AOG at South Road with all 3 points and keep the pressure on Pye Green Towers.

Pye Green themselves are away to new boys Place Of Refuge Community Church who are having a steady first season in the League. I reckon Pye Greens strength in the scoring department will see them just win this game but only by the odd goal.

The last game is between the bottom 2 teams, Monyhull Church and Hawbush. Hawbush’s performances seem to be improving and as in the game above I believe their superior strength in the goal scoring department will see them take all 3 points.
