Kovacs’ Kolumn 4th April

Congratulations to Renewal Solihull who last week secured promotion to Division 1 winning their last game of the season. They now have to wait to see if they have done enough to finish Runner Up. Monyhull Church need 2 wins to prevent this but only need 2 more points to also qualify for promotion. Zion City still have a slim hope which was kept alive with a 4-4 draw against Champions Wednesbury Baptist Church. Sandwell United couldn’t get a win in their last game to make it interesting at the bottom, losing to Maple Leaf 6-2, but the level of Brierley Hills defeat to Renewal means that the Hill lads could still end up bottom if they fail to pick up another point. Saint Michael are their opponents today and I only see 3 more points for St Michaels here. Selly Oak Methodist thumped Corinthians SK 8-1 and with 3 games remaining may be looking to get more points to wonder what all the panic was about when they were near the bottom. They play Hawbush today and would go above them if they win and i’m tipping them to do so. Last game in Division 3 sees Dudley Lions host Corinthians who are now safe from ending up bottom. Using the ‘Entertainment Table’ i’m going for a Dudley Lions win. In all 3 games both teams have very similar attacking statistics but I have predicted the teams with the poorer defence to lose! (That’s the theory).

Division 1 had twists and turns again last weekend with St Mary’s tripping up with a 1-1 draw with Charlemont Star and Clarendon going back to the top with a 3-1 win over W’ton and Perton Churches. With W’ton losing, Halesowen Zion strengthened their claim for 4th spot with a good 2-0 win over Sheldon Community Church and just when things looked like they might be settled at the bottom end of the table City Church had a tremendous 3-1 win over 3rd placed Connect Sports. A few weeks ago I thought Chawns point against Charlemont may just keep them up but that changed when Rowley drew with Clarendon. I then thought that they were home and dry looking at City’s fixtures, but nope, yet another twist with their win over Connect. One more win for City will put them on level points with Rowley and of City’s 3 remaining games today could be their best chance of doing so. Sheldon have the better stats in attack and defence but I am going with a gut feeling of a City win here. If they do so, they will leap frog Rowley should they fail to get anything against championship chasing Clarendon. So can Rowley not only make the title chase take yet another twist but also get at least 1 more point to maybe help their cause to stay up? Can they manage all 3 which I reckon would make them favourites to stay up? Well, I’m going for Clarendon to bag all 3 points to really put the pressure on St Mary’s who do not play today. If Clarendon win then they become huge favourites for the title in my eyes as they will have points in the bag whereas St Mary’s have a backlog of fixtures to fit in. Zion Athletic play their last League game of the season against fellow Church team Halesowen Zion. If Zion Athletic manage a draw it will give them an equal record statistically regarding wins, losses and goals scored and against. I don’t ever remember seeing that happening before but I may be wrong! A win for Halesowen though would strengthen their challenge for 4th place and I think they will get it.
