Kovacs’ Kolumn Preview 30th August

A very brief preview of todays matches beginning with what is arguably the game of the day with last seasons Division 1 Winners playing the Runners Up, Sheldon travel to St Mary’s looking to gain an early season advantage. St Mary’s only lost 1 game last season but I’m tipping Sheldon to actually inflict a defeat on them today.

Clarendon, who were the team to end up above in recent years, travel to last seasons Cup Winners Zion Athletic. Fresh from winning the Kevin Kovacs Memorial game last week I believe a more resilient Zion will be get a point from this game.

Rowley College host City Church, 2 teams who on their day can be a match for the best. I don’t think there will be a lot in this, 2-1 to Rowley.

2 teams hoping to have a better season than last are St Thomas’ Aldridge and Halesowen Zion. Whilst Halesowen in the end finished comfortably away from the relegation positions St Thomas’ had to battle right up to the end. I think Halesowen will win with a 2 goal margin in their favour.

Two newly promoted teams from Division 2 face each other on the opening day of the season. Connect Sports travel to play Wolverhampton & Perton Churches. Connect ended up as Division 2 Runners Up last season and I see them starting off with a win today.

The last game in Division 1 also sees two teams from Division 2 facing each other. Whilst it is Charlemont Stars first season in the top flight it is great to see the name of Chawn Hill Church back in the top Division. One of only 2 ever present teams from the formation of the League, Brierley Hill AOG being the other, Chawn, like Clarendon have a history of success. How will they fare this season? Well, my seasons forecast for everyone will be on the site on Monday. But I think Chawn may just have enough today to pinch a narrow victory, Charlemont are no push over.

Brierley Hill, like Chawn, continue with another season in the League with a home game against relegated Corinthians SK. The Hill started last season well but really struggled at the back end. Corinthians just struggled all season in the top flight. However, I think Corinthians will start this season with a win today.

Dudley Lions vs Pye Green Towers should be a cracking game today, both teams had a good season last term and this could go either way so i’m going for a draw.

Rockmount United vs Monyhull Church has had to be reversed and is now being played at Rowheath. Rockmount should be too strong for Monyhull but maybe Monyhulls young lads will be getting more about them. I’m going for a draw.

Zion City play Hawbush and If Zion carry on as they finished last season then I can only see a win for them.

Saint Michael play a new name to the League in Wednesbury Baptist Church, although a large proportion of the squad is the old Living Hope Church. Knowing this, I expect a win for Wednesbury, maybe 2-0.

Renewal Solihull have Sandwell United today and as ever I can never think of Renewal without thinking of Brian Follows. I have so many funny memories of us both on the sideline. Solihull should give Brian a quiet day today as I expect them to win, again by 2 clear goals.

Last game in Division 2 sees Selly Oak Methodist face Maple Leaf Rovers. Selly Oak, I believe, have had a good pre season and should they carry that into today then I think they may sneak the points.

So that’s my quick take on things for the opening day of the season. I wish everyone well for today, players, officials, spectators.
