Kovacs’ Kolumn Is Back! Preview February 7th.

Well it’s been a while since I have been on here. Basically, I have been living where there has been no internet access so the Kolumn has suffered. However, back to normal now and there is a fair bit to look back on…in fact too much for me to cover tonight so I have decided to do a review separately later in the week, (hopefully by Tuesday night). I have decided to just focus on tomorrows games and we come back with a bang starting with the Leagues Cup Quarter-Final matches!

To add extra spice to the games, the draw for the Semi’s was made at the League Meeting and is on the Cup Fixtures Page. All 8 teams will be thinking that they could win it this year!

St Mary’s should be the favourites but over the years we have seen many teams slip up as they near the Final. I cannot see them slipping up tomorrow though. City Church’s best hope I believe is a dogged rearguard action and either a break away goal or penalties, but with them shipping over 3 goals a game I think this is too much of a task for them.

Not much to choose between Halesowen Zion and Wolverhampton and Perton Churches in one of the other ties. Both Clubs have won half of their League games played and both also overcame very tough opposition in the last round, Halesowen beating Wednesbury Baptist 2-1 and Wolverhampton beating Connect Sports 5-4 in extra time. They have met twice so far this season with goals aplenty…5-4 to Wolverhampton early in October and 4-1 to Halesowen in the middle of November. The League table shows that Halesowen have the tighter defence and with Wolverhampton conceding 4 goals in both their previous games I’m going to go for a Halesowen Zion win.

The third tie sees a repeat of last seasons Cup Final, but both teams have changed dramatically since then with Sheldon struggling each week to field their best team and Zion Athletic having had a huge change of personnel within the Club. Having spoken to some of the Sheldon lads in the changing room after the Cup Final last season I know how disappointed they were and I am sure they would like to gain some sort of revenge for that defeat, but I’m not entirely sure what team they will put out. Zion Athletic look the healthier placed of the 2 teams in the League but if you have a closer look it’s not as clear as t seems. If Sheldon could just win a couple of their games in hand everything starts to look a little different. I’m going for Lyndon to get his best team out for this game and to narrowly sneak a win.

The last tie sees Rowley College face the only Division 2 team left in the Cup, Monyhull Church who have been a revelation this season. This really is an interesting fixture with Monyhull doing really well coming up against a Rowley side who have seen better days but carry years and years of experience. I really think this one will go to extra time and maybe even all the way to penalties. I normally put my head on the block with a gut feeling forecast but I’m not comfortable with this one……..well here goes…experience and a Rowley win!

Just 2 games in Division 1 with current leaders Connect Sports hosting bottom placed St Thomas’ Aldridge. I cannot see Connect being top of the table come seasons end but all they can do is keep winning and putting pressure on the chasing teams to catch them. I cannot see anything but a win for Connect and if the Ricketts lads are fired up then this is a great chance to improve the Clubs goal difference.

The other game sees 2 of last seasons promoted Clubs play each other with Chawn Hill Church visiting Charlemont Star. Chawn won the reverse fixture 2-0 on the opening day of the season but Charlemont have steadily improved building much on their strength at the back. Chawn have been the polar opposite and have conceded a whooping 71 goals in 17 games! These 2 teams seem to have close games and I’m going for a draw.

With Rockmount leaving the League it would appear that Wednesbury Baptist are Champions elect with an 11 point gap between them and their closest rivals, but they do have a game in hand. They travel to play Renewal Solihull and Renewal really need to turn Wednesbury over if the title race is to carry on into the later weeks of the season. I would like to see that happen just to keep it interesting, but in all honesty it’s a Wednesbury win for me.

South Rd hosts Hawbush vs Brierley Hill AOG with the Hill lads now sitting bottom of the table. With a combined goals against total of 129, this should really be where you want to be if you want to see some goals. Hawbush won the reverse game 3-1 but I reckon the Hill lads will battle away and get a point here.

A win for Selly Oak Methodist over Corinthians SK would see them leapfrog their rivals for the day. Selly Oak appear to have found some form lately but I will go for Corinthians to turn around their recent decline with a win here.

Saint Michael make the trip to face Pye Green Towers and they will quickly want to forget last weeks performance. Pye Green have hardly played this year and may see this as a fresh start to the year to get back to the winning ways of last season. I’m going for a score draw…possibly 2-2.

The last game sees Dudley Lions host Sandwell United. Before Christmas this would have been an easy prediction but football can change in a short time, (Randy Lerner…are you listening)? Sandwell have started scoring, (Villa are you watching)? With their improved form they have moved off the bottom and will no doubt be playing with confidence. Dudleys defence is fairly solid though and for this reason, it’s another draw for me.

So there you have it, my first predictions of 2015. I hope to be doing better than at the end of last year!
