Review April 5th + Preview 12th April

The race to be Champions took another twist last ween with St Mary’s winning and Sheldon dropping points with a draw. St Mary’s 2-0 win for me was huge, Clarendon were never going to lie down and by all accounts it was a very competitive match. St Mary’s still have 3 tough games left but this win will give them a boost. Sheldon drew with City Church 3-3 and whilst they dropped 2 points they still have it in their own hands to be crowned Champions. Sandwell United proved my forecast wrong with a 3-2 win over Corinthians SK pushing them into bottom place and confirming their relegation. For Sandwell United, they still have hope, however faint, of avoiding this fate but probably need 4 wins to have the remotest chance of staying up…stranger things have happened and I am sure Myles and Roy will not have given up yet.

In Division 2, Connect Sports finished off their league games with a thumping 11-1 win over Wollaston Free Athletic. This was also Wollaston’s last league fixture but it was also their last game in the League. It has been a struggle for them this season, John and Steve who have run the Club all season were probably not helped by some of last seasons players moving elsewhere and not informing them of their intention to do so. Credit to them, they have managed to see the season out and we wish them well for the future. The relegation situation is still not resolved with Rockmount United losing 5-3 to Renewal Solihull. Whilst Rockmount still have the edge to stay up, Selly Oak Methodist still have an outside chance of swapping places with Rockmount.

Chawn Hill Church carried on their league form with a convincing 8-0 win over Selly Oak Methodist in the Division 2 Cup.

It was a massive week at the top of Division 3 last week with the initiative swinging firmly back in Pye Green Towers favour. They had a huge 2-1 away win over Dudley Lions and with Living Hope Church losing 2-1 at home to Zion City means 2 wins for the Green lads will seal the title. Living Hope may feel disappointed but Zion City who are 4th are a team in form. Place Of Refuge Community Church beat Hawbush 3-1 in the last game in Division 3 and while the promotion issues are sorted the bottom place is still to be decided.

Preview:

All Saints Olympic have a chance to widen the gap between themselves and Sheldon with a win over St Thomas’ Aldridge. I fully expect them to do this and whilst 2nd place looks unlikely for them, all they can is win their games and see what happens elsewhere.St Thomas’ desperately need points now with a gap opening up at the bottom but I don’t see any hope for them in this game.

A win for Halesowen Zion against Sandwell United should be enough to ensure 1st Division football next season but this will be a hard game for them. Sandwell really need to win all of their last 4 games to say the same and last weeks win may give them an extra lift tomorrow in the battle against the drop. Draw.

Clarendon face already relegated Corinthians SK and I believe this should be a steady win for Clarendon.

The last game in Division 1 sees City Church up against Rowley College. Both teams will be aiming for 4th spot in my eyes with City’s need for the win greater than Rowley’s. City carry the greater attacking threat but Rowley seem to have developed a resilience in defence of late. I’m going for a 2-1 win to Rowley.

Sheldon and Zion Athletics fixtures were both postponed due to their involvement in the Cup Final on Monday night.

Can Selly Oak Methodist keep their hopes of avoiding the drop alive in their game against Renewal Solihull. Whilst a draw would not completely extinguish their hopes it would need a huge win against Rockmount in their last game to then stay up. Solihull had a good win over Rockmount last week but this my ‘hunch of the week’ game, Selly Oak to win.

Darkhouse play Wolverhampton & Perton in their last league games and with nothing riding on it this may be a chance for them to just play for the sheer fun of it and go for goals galore! I still expect a win for the W’ton lads though.

In Division Two’s Group Of Death, Connect Sports host Charlemont Star. The Star lads had been in good form of late and I was surprised that they lost their last league game to Selly Oak..Connect were scoring for fun last week but tomorrows opponents will be a tougher nut to crack. However, I’m going for a narrow Connect win here.

I am sure the lads from Pye Green Towers will be looking keenly at the Living Hope Church vs Dudley Lions result. It’s another huge game at the top and one both teams will be fired up for. Dudley really need to win to possibly pinch 2nd spot and Living Hope need the win to maintain their chance of the title. I’ve been forecasting a top 2 of Pye green and Living Hope for ages now and I am sticking with that. Therefore, it’s a win for Living Hope for me.

Another massive game in Division 3, which had actually escaped my notice until now, is the bottom of the table clash between Monyhull Church and Hawbush. Once again, it’s a must win for bottom placed Monyhull, whereas, a draw for Hawbush would probably be enough to prevent ending up bottom. I think Hawbush carry a more potent goal threat and Si Ashby’s experience will see Hawbush win this.

Last game of the day sees Place Of Refuge Community Church play Saint Michael in the Division 3 Cup. Although neither team can qualify for the next round there’s still pride and 3rd place to play for. I’m going for a Refuge win.
