No Christmas cheer for us today! We often seem to get Chawn in the Christmas fixture and a couple of years ago turned in our worst ever performance (though losing only narrowly 5-4!). Today was nowhere near as bad as that but inexplicably we lacked energy and purpose only a week after showing so much of both in ending Clarendon’s 100% record last week. Today both sides had their game plans (and both teams were well aware of how the other would play) but Chawn were much better at enacting theirs than we were ours. They packed the midfield and dominated early possession, passing the ball well without really threatening (Matt and Chris were our best players today) while we struggled to put three passes together. We spent most of the game today trying to climb out of this early stupor.
It was a pretty dreadful game to watch but we have good players and where there’s life there’s hope! Fact is Chawn were the better TEAM and appeared to want it more and nobody typified this more than the evergreen ‘Bedders’ whose commitment is always explicit. To make it worse we actually took the lead (against the run of play) when Ben Smith delivered a perfect free kick onto Matty Williams’ head. For ten minutes Chawn were a little panicked and we had chances on the break. One of these presented us with a great chance to be 2-0 as Tom Cartin ran in on their keeper from half way but an awful bobble (from Chawn’s crazy pitch) saw him slice wide.
No sooner this than Chawn equalised with a really good finish following a persistent run. Deserved certainly and as we still couldn’t get it together the prelude to a second following catastrophic marking from us at a corner. Half time and we had everything to do. Sadly we couldn’t and the only real surprise was that it ended 2-1: both sides did seem capable of scoring more. Al made a couple of good saves and we at last had some pressure particularly after we brought on South and old boy Craig Micklewright. Both had an impact and Tom had a couple of decent efforts. In fact there were a couple of late goalmouth scrambles which may have brought us a point but onbalnce I don’t really think we deserved it. Merry Christmas to all in the wmcfl and a Happy New Year from all at Rowley College FC.
