This week has flown by and unfortunately I have had to spend time dealing with other aspects of League Business but here is a quick review of the games in Division 2 last weekend and a couple of late Match Reports.
A huge win for new boys Living Hope Church United sees them sitting top of the division with 7 points from 3 games. The margin of their win over Zion City surprised me. I bumped into Lee Ralph at Goals in Rowley on the Thursday night prior to these matches and the extra training must be doing him some good as he popped up with 1 of Living Hopes 5 goals with Lewis Beardsmore bagging a brace, Benjamin Berrows and Callum Oakshott being their other goal scorers. A bit of a dent in Zions promotion push as they doubled the amount of goals let in so they will be looking to get things back on track as quickly as possible.
Following Living Hope in the table are 4 teams all sitting on 6 points having won 2 games and lost 1. Corinthians had a steady 3-0 win away to Hawbush but Dudley Lions had a close game with Selly Oak Methodist with Dudley winning 3-2. Both teams had a player who scored twice, Kieran Blak-Burke for Selly Oak and Chris Dalloway for Dudley whose 3rd goal was popped in by Stefan Broome.
Another player popping up with 2 goals was Kiran Kellman for Maple Leaf Rovers Q.M.C. Other scorers for them in their 4-1 away win over St Thomas’ Aldridge were Nathan Pugh and Chris Price. It was an own goal for the Aldridge lads who need to sort their defence out quickly as they have now let in 4 goals in 2 of their 3 matches so far.
The last game in Division 2 saw Saint Michael and Sandwell United battle it out in a 1-1 draw. Here is an edited report from Saint Michael, (full report is in the Match Report section):
Saint Michael 1-1 sandwell United
On Saturday morning we hosted Sandwell United. Lovely weather with a great atmosphere and also a great team of referee’s that joined us.
Sandwells right winger put a lot of pressure on our left back with their first chance coming from that side with a poor clearance leading to a Sandwell shot. A chance which was not taken. The next chance they had they did find the net but the Assistant Referees flag came up and it was still 0-0. Our defence were playing poorly and it would cost us later in the game.
But before that we improved a little bit and with our first chance we took the lead. The all was passed to the right winger who took it closer to goal and delivered it into the box where Robert Zaleski was waiting for it, but he let ball pass through his legs to a better placed Michal Rozalski who shot close to the near side post and the ball was in the net.
Both team were now having chances but Sandwell were able to take advantage of another bad clearance from defence and get a clean shot on target to the far post and the ball bounced off the post into net.
Half Time 1-1
Second half was an exciting 45 minutes with both teams pushing forward to score and get the 3 points. Sandwells left winger was their main threat with most of their good chances coming from there and we were struggling to contain him. Sandwell missed by an inch from a corner and Michal Proszek cleared right off the line for us.
For us at the other end, Janusz Cyran hit the post in a one on one chance and Radek Guterwills shot was stopped on the line by a Sandwell defender.
So that’s my quick review of Division 2 but we also have a Match Report from the ever reliable Pete from Rowley regarding their 2-1 defeat to City Church:
City Church 2-1 Rowley College
I was at graduation this week so my report is second hand via conversations with Mark and an ‘interim report’ from Mike who saw some of it.
Headline is that we were very disappointed to lose having dominated possession for much of the game but, as I’ve already implied we are a little short of ‘strikerage’ with Fowler (Ben not Robbie) still in the states.
Anyway Mike Ibrahim sent this part:
Here is what I saw from about 15 mins in:
Rowley had most of the possession in the remaining 30 minutes of the first half with some good approach play, without seriously threatening the City goal. Towards the end of the half Rowley were given a warning of what was to come when City broke three times in the space of 5 minutes. The first time Lee made a brilliant save when it seemed certain the striker would score. Then, City wasted another good chance sending the ball wide, finally Obi hit the post from a narrow angle. Half time 0-0.
The first five minutes of the second half changed the game. Rowley gave a needless corner away and City scored with a header from this. A couple of minutes later, another well-taken City corner and another goal. Rowley were not out of it and continued to press down the hill. Craig made it 2-1 with a quality finish past Obi who was now in goal. In another break Matt Stanton was injured contesting a loose ball with the keeper and had to go off to receive treatment.
That’s where I left it, about 20 mins gone.
We then continued to lay seige to their goal without success and had Ben Smith sent off for a (perhaps understandably) ‘colourful’ spontaneous response to being kicked full on in the unmentionables.
All the best to City Church.
With time pressing and a dog that needs a long walk it’s time for a break.
Andres from Maple Leaf Rovers QMC has sent me his predictions for tomorrow but I have not even looked at tomorrows games yet. So it’s a long walk over the fields in the dark and a large cup of tea when I get back.
The Prediction Challenge and Player Registration update should be on here tomorrow morning, or more than likely in the late hours of tonight.
Enjoy what’s left of your Friday night folks.
